The Khvostov has made a return in Destiny 2, and for the most part, this auto rifle hasn’t changed much from its original days in Destiny. Currently, the Khvostov is the most popular and efficient PvP weapon in the meta. In this guide, I’ll explain how to obtain this exceptional S-tier weapon, share my experience and pain during the process, and discuss how to handle a major bug encountered at the end of the journey. Let’s get started!

The first step is to gather all zone chests in Pale Heart. Each zone has 3 chests, so a total of 9 encrypted bits should be collected.
Building Chest
The first spot is near the teleport zone.
Building chest location
Building chest jump puzzle
Jump the rocks to get in the building. Go straightforwardly you will see the chest in the back room.
Cave Chest
Moving forward. The second bit is under the bridge nearby.
Cave chest location
The cave entrance
Move into the cave, you will see the hole in a couple of meters. Jump down the rock platforms and you will find the chest.
The Tree Waterfall Chest
The most significant location at “The Landing” is the solitary tree on the platform. Move there.
The Lone Tree Waterfall location
Jump off the bridge, there will be rock platforms.
What you should see to find the chest
Move forward toward the arrow in the screenshot. No more jumps, you will reach behind the waterfall in a couple of steps. The chest is right there, so you won’t miss it.
Now we have 3 encrypted bits. It’s time to move to the next zone. The Blooming might be the fastest zone to get all chests quickly.
Cave Under The Landing Zone in Blooming
Use teleport and don’t rush forward too much.
Where is the entrance?
Cheeky orange crate is right there
Once you arrive at the LZ (the blue star) of the Blooming, jump down and go straight for about 10 meters. Then, turn around, and you will see the cave entrance (red arrow). Enter the cave and follow the road ahead. Once you see the hand statue, look up a bit, and you’ll find a little orange chest hidden among the rocks!
Chest On Top Of The Tree
In this case, the chest is visible from the start. Teleport to LZ and look a bit to the right. Do you see the tree? Climb it, but be careful not to jump too far. The Catapult Lift will probably be the best way to solve the puzzle (if you are Titan ofc). Got the chest? Nice, but don’t leave the top of the tree just yet!
He definitely thinks he is a bird
The Cliff Chest
The easiest to find. If you are on top of the tree and already done with your “tree” chest, look down. There will be a cliff and probably an event. But look closely. A little orange object is right there! You know what to do.
You can hide but you cannot run!
Now we have six bits already. We’re heading to The Impasse, the last zone in the Pale Heart.
The Rock Stairs Chest
After teleporting to the landing zone of Impasse, turn 90 degrees to the right and move towards the edge of the cliff. Look down. You should see some rock stairs. Go down the stairs and you’ll find the chest right away.
Move down and look around
The Temple Chest
This one can also be discovered from the start. Teleport back to LZ, then turn around. Do you see the temple? Look closely; there is an orange object on top. Just climb onto the roof of the temple – an easy task.
Jump around the platforms
Rocks Chest
Back to LZ, turn left, and move around the tree. You will see the rocks far away. Head to the red arrow zone to find the road inside the rocks.
Rocks massive to the left of the wall
Find the hole
Once you reach the road inside the rocks you will see the hole in the wall ahead. Get in the hole. The chest is hiding right there!
Congratulations! You have completed the easiest part. Now let’s move on to the real job.
Once you got all 9 bits from secret chests it is time to go back to Micah-10.
Micah-10 location
Open the Conduit terminal and start doing the quests. Rescue the ghosts and participate in events in each zone as requested until you can join the Cyst event. There are a total of 6 events that become available one after another. If you have already completed all these quests, you can check your progress in the quest tab. Look for the quest called “Alone in the Dark”; it should be in your tab.
This quest is repeatable
To ensure that you can proceed with further steps right-click on it and scroll back to step 1.
Check your progress
Here you will find the statistics of discovered Cyst events. There should be 6. If you are just starting the questline, you should look for bits each time you discover a new Cyst during the questline to save your time.
Now we need to find the last 6 bits. Only one bit of each Cyst is available. Follow the “Alone in the Dark” questline. However, if you’ve completed Micah’s quests, you’ll notice that there are only 3 Cysts available on the map instead of 6. Just go to each of them and you will find a bird sitting near the entrance. You will be able to choose the needed Cyst by talking to the right bird.
Bird fella will help you to find the way
If no birds are present, it means you are not done with “Alone in the Dark”, and you should proceed with quests.
The Searing Light Cyst Encryption Bit Location
You need to complete the cyst. It is small and pretty much straightforward. After that, just look around for the cave entrance. You need to find the one with the violet light inside.
Cave entrance
Get in, move to the left, and perform a little jump. The pile of scraps is on the ground. Check it.
The Sword Dance Cyst Encryption Bit Location
You don’t need to complete the entire Cyst if you are not on the quest.
Perform long jump
Complete stage 1 and move forward. You need to wipe out all enemies around. But, instead of moving up, you need to look down. There is another entrance. Jump there and you will find a pile of scraps on the ground right away. Check it.
The Aerial Ace Cyst Encryption Bit Location
This time you need to complete the challenge. Then take a look at the lava zone around. Find the violet crystal light.
There will be a small island
Jump on that rock and remember lava hits hard as hell. You can take only 1 hit before you die, so jump carefully. After that, you will see more underground space.
Move in, don’t die in lava
Jump over the lava pool. Don’t rush, you`re almost there. Look on the right wall. You must see the dry roots around.
More holes…
You will find the hole behind the roots and a pile of scraps. Get the bit. We are done here, let`s move to the next.
The Moth-Infested Cavern Cyst Encryption Bit Location
Make sure to select the right bird to follow before entering the Cyst zone. If you’re not working on the “Alone in the Dark” questline, you don’t have to complete this challenge. Upon entering the area beyond the chain barrier, proceed until you reach the first temple area.
First temple area
Don’t stand that platform, it will spawn enemies. Instead, you need to go all the way down under the platform and find a small hole with violet light inside.
The hole again!
There are 2 similar passages, both of which are dead ends. You may not see the light right away, but you can’t miss the pile because there are no other options to go.
The Slayer Cyst Encryption Bit Location
Now we have returned to the exact location of the Searing Light Cyst. The only difference is that we are now looking for a cave without violet light inside.
Cave entrance with no violet light
Complete the Cyst, head to the middle area, and look around. You will see a cave entrance with no lights. Move forward until you face a pillar; the pile of scraps will be right behind it. Be careful not to move to the right, or you might miss it.
Scraps behind the pillar. Don’t miss it!
The Smothering Darkness Cyst Encryption Bit Location
The last step is to complete the Cyst and defeat the boss. Then, jump to the middle platform and search for an entrance with “neon” lights.
Neon lights cave entrance
Go there and head down until you see the pillar. The scrap pile hides to the right, just move around the pillar.
Take it. Now you have 15 bits and all of them become one. You receive a Lost Encryption Code. But we are not done yet. Even close…
Now it is time to get our first reward—the weapon itself. Teleport back to the landing zone of the Impasse. And move towards the small door.
Entrance mark
Run through, it is pretty straightforward, just go upstairs. And you will find a locked zone chest. Orange one. You can unlock it with your Encryption code now and get this.
Kvostov but Legendary?
Wait a minute, a legendary? But it is supposed to be Exotic! Indeed. But, this is what you get after 6 hours of events and other stuff. Too much you say? I agree, but the “Final Shape” of this rifle is worth the grind. So, let’s continue.
In this part, we need to collect motes of light to unlock the full potential of the weapon and make it Exotic. We need to travel across the Pale Heart once again. There are 8 motes of light across all locations this time.
Mote of Light #1
You will find the first mote here. In my position.
Mote #1 location
White ball is the thing we are searching for
Check the waterfall. See the white ball? That is our client. Let’s move forward.
Mote of Light #2
Back to The Landing. Use your teleport to the spot and turn left.
Ball to the left of waterfall
You can’t see it yet, but the ball is under the waterfall. Trust me.
Mote of Light #3
This one is really tough compared to previous motes. You need to go to the Cyst location but run through it instead of starting the Cyst itself.
Entrance location
Once I entered the caves, I found our bird friend and chased him until I reached the open area with a Shrieker above my head.
Shrieker area
Kill the Shrieker. And get closer to the edge of the cliff. Turn right and move along. Then, you need to step down a little bit and look in the opposite direction. It should look like this.
There is a passage under the cliff
See the rocks down there? Move forward and keep looking for the waterfall on the left.
Secret cave
Yep, that is the spot. Get the mote and let’s move to the next location!
Mote of Light #4
Teleport to The Blooming. Go all the way to the left until you reach the Seclusion passage.
Passage location
This jump puzzle is not that easy
Stop before the entrance and look up. The mote is on the top of the tree. Complete a little jump puzzle to get it.
Mote of Light #5
Don’t leave the area. Descend from the tree and initiate the Searing Light Cyst. We go again. Follow the bird.
Cyst activator
Stop here
Once you reach this spot – stop. Then, turn around.
Traditionally – the hole
This is the hole where you find the mote of light. Get in – grab it. Remember do not use your teleport yet. We need to go back to the small house area!
Mote of Light #6
We are back in the house area. Now we are heading to the right passage and going all the way through the mountains.
Exit the Cyst and go back to this location
The trip will be long but straightforward, just follow the campaign route until you reach this zone.
You need to reach this location
The mote behind the radar plate
Climb the mountain until you get to the Memory zone. Check the mote behind the radar.
Mote of Light #7
Teleport to Impasse. Go to the left of the temple.
Halo location
You will find this mote inside the halo. Easy.
Mote of Light #8
We move again to the Transgression but not for Cyst this time. Just go through to reach this spot.
You need to reach this location
Stop here once you see this area
Turn right and look up
We are going up and all the way through until we see the red light to the left.
Vision is obscured. Look closely
It is time to go there. Jump up and you will find the last mote of light!
The last mote of light
This mission is over. It’s been 9 hours so far, but we are now heading to the next phase of this journey.
Time to go back to The Lost City and find the chest with so much desired weapon inside.
Entrance location
Place all motes
Here we are. Place your motes one by one. The moment of truth! And…
“You lack something” Cringe… The reward is right in front of me but I can’t take it. After 9 hours you still won’t let me grab the weapon Bungie? Ok, so what are we doing now?
It’s surprising, but you actually need 17 motes of life to obtain the Primordial Mote of Life, not just 8. To gather the additional 9 motes, you can participate in Overthrow events. In each location, there are 3 bosses per Overthrow event, and each boss drops one mote. So, in total, you can collect 9 motes from these events. The main issue is that bosses spawn randomly, and you will need to grind the damn bunch of these events until you face each of them.
The Landing Overthrow Boss List:
The Blooming Overthrow Boss List:
The Impasse Overthrow Boss List:
Have you defeated all of them at least once? Good. But, there is a catch…
How To Overcome The Mote Of Light Bug?
Yes, you heard it right. It is almost July, and the bug is still there. There are tons of reports on the internet about people defeating all bosses in overthrow events but lacking 1 or 2 motes of light.
If you did not receive a Primordial Mote of Life but did defeat each boss, congratulations! You are also experiencing the bug. So you are 15 or 16 motes at the moment. What should you do now?
It seems that the boss Koftiks, also known as “Meatball” Taken By The Witness, does not drop the mote of light reliably. Personally, I spent an additional 6 hours grinding the Blooming Overthrow event to obtain the last mote. Keep trying if you’re experiencing similar issues. If you are lucky now you have your Kvostov auto rifle. Time to test it in action!
I have to admit, this weapon is amazing!
It has a steady aim, no recoil, a predictable shooting pattern, and extreme comfort. I took this weapon to Trials and it was just unstoppable. I could aim down, hold the trigger, and get frags one after another. I’m not a good PvP player, but the Kvostov just destroyed all the competitors in no time! Believe it or not, I rank this weapon 10 out of 10 in PvP this thing is NUTS! Pure fun and joy — the best kill tool I’ve used in a while.
There are some prismatic PvE builds that use this weapon as the main damage dealer, and it performs perfectly in most situations. I would rate Kvostov in PvE 9 out of 10. Its performance has been insane so far.
Should you take it? – Yes. Is it worth the time? – Yes. Despite around 20 hours of grind and pain, I definitely recommend you to get this weapon. But if you want to save your time and mental health, LepreStore.com specialists will be glad to help you obtain this rifle. Feel free to check out our Khvostov Boost page for more info.
