The Pit of Artificers, also known as The Pit, is a randomized dungeon, meaning that monsters and dungeon layouts are different on each run and floor. The Pit is a true endgame challenge, even for optimized characters, consisting of 200 unlockable tiers that scale in difficulty and rewards. It starts with monsters being Level 100 at Tier 1 (equal to a Nightmare Dungeon Tier 46). The player’s goal is to slay enough monsters and the summoned boss before the 15-minute timer runs out. The Pit is very similar to Diablo 3’s Greater Rifts.
Before being able to enter, you’ll first need to be in World Tier, and then you’ll have to run a Tier 46 Nightmare Dungeon to complete a Priority Quest. The Obelisk for entering the Pit is located in Cerrigar, Scosglen next to Waypoint.
Each run of the Pit requires Runeshards to enter. Runeshards come from completing most endgame activities, like Nightmare Dungeons, Helltide Chests, Legion Events and Whisper Caches.
The Pit has a tier system like Nightmare Dungeons, the higher the tier, the higher level enemies you’ll fight.
Entering the Pit will start a timer, defeating enemies fills your progress bar. The goal is to fill this progress bar before the time runs out.
Dying during the Pit will reduce your time remaining depending on how many times you’ve died.
If you die during a run in The Pit, 30 seconds will be added to the timer. Dying again will penalize you by adding 60 seconds to the timer. Lastly, each death from the third one onwards will add 90 seconds to the clock. This death penalty scales for the whole group, not per individual.
Once you’ve completed your progress bar, you’ll get a portal to the boss stage. Defeating the boss will stop the timer and finish your run of the pit. Depending on how much time remaining you have, this will determine how many additional tiers you’ll unlock.
Completing a run in The Pit comes with rewards such as Rares, Legendaries, Uniques, Obols (for gambling), and various crafting materials, but more importantly you’ll get Masterworking Materials and Stygian Stones. The person starting the run is the only one who receives 100% Masterworking material rewards. Other participating group members receive 50% of the Masterworking materials.
For Masterworking Materials you have:
Which material you get will depend on the tier of the Pit you run. You can use these Masterworking Materials at the Blacksmith to upgrade your gear, this replaces the old Blacksmith upgrade system.
Neathirons and Ingoliths can be transmuted at the alchemist at a conversion rate of 1 to 5:
UPDATE: The most recent patch made conversion rate a bit lower. Now, 1 Neathiron = 3 Ingolith and 1 Ingolith = 3 Obducite!
Stygian stones can be used on any of the endgame bosses to spawn a level 200 version of that boss along with summoning materials. These bosses have much higher drops than their original version. You’ll need to be well geared or be experienced in boss mechanics in order to defeat these bosses.
The most enticing part of Torment Bosses comes from their ability to drop a Resplendent Spark that can be used to craft Uber Uniques. The first Torment Boss a player kills each season rewards 1 Spark, and this limit is account-wide. The first Uber Lilith kill each season also grants an additional account-wide Resplendent Spark. Counting these two and the one rewarded by completing the Season 4 Iron Wolves board/reputation, players can get three guaranteed Sparks this season. Any player lucky enough to receive an Uber Unique can Salvage it and use the other Sparks to Transmute an Uber Unique of their choice at the Alchemist.
