During the BlizzCon 2023 What’s Next panel for World of Warcraft, Cinematic Narrative Director Terran Gregory, Associate Design Director Maria Hamilton, and Associate Game Director Morgan Day delved into an insightful overview of the upcoming content update known as The War Within.
Embark on a journey into the subterranean depths of Azeroth as The War Within unfolds, marking the tenth expansion for World of Warcraft and serving as the inaugural chapter in the Worldsoul Saga™. This expansion promises to reveal a new world teeming with mystery, wonder, and darkness, inviting players to explore the uncharted depths of Azeroth.
The cinematic reveal showcased a poignant moment between Thrall and Anduin, the latter having wandered in solitude for years. Two significant developments emerged: Thrall spoke of a compelling vision from the heart of the world, referred to as the Radiant Song, beckoning our heroes to investigate its origins. Simultaneously, a gathering darkness beneath the Dragon Isles surfaces, unveiling the return of Xal’atath, the Harbinger foretold by Iridikron.
Freed from the black blade that once bound her, Xal’atath emerges as the Harbinger of a new Void era, with a message of the Old Gods’ demise and a call to face a new formidable power—the nerubians of Azj-Kahet. In a surprising alliance, Xal’atath grants the nerubians the means for a dark evolution, transforming them into ferocious and terrifying soldiers.
Azeroth’s heroes, including Anduin Wrynn, Thrall, Magni Bronzebeard, and Alleria Windrunner, face unique challenges in their quest. Anduin grapples with his relationship with the Holy Light, Thrall seeks connection to spreading visions, Magni confronts the weight of his responsibility, and Alleria, as a void hunter, battles the call of the Void while pursuing Xal’atath.
As dream-like visions summon us from the heart of Azeroth, we find ourselves exploring the subterranean continent of Khaz Algar, forgotten until recent Uldaman exploration. The Earthen, once unified, now exist as Oathsworn, Unbound, and Machine Speakers, each with its own set of customs and challenges. It falls upon the heroes of Azeroth to unite the Earthen and replenish their dwindling numbers.
Players will have the opportunity to play as the Earthen, choosing between the Horde and Alliance, with various customizations including gem encrustations, beards, and skin colorizations.
Encountering the Arathi, worshippers of Holy Fire trapped within Khaz Algar, players will witness their dedication to bringing hope and light to the darkness. The Arathi face relentless nerubian assaults, presenting a dire threat to their society.
Exploring the nerubian’s last kingdom deep within Khaz Algar, players will encounter various forms of these ancient survivors of the Black Empire, each serving different roles in the City of Threads. Queen Ansurek’s collaboration with Xal’atath has led to the nerubians evolving into paragons of their race.
Explore the Isle of Dorn, the Ringing Deeps, Hallowfall, and the deepest area, Azj-Kahet, each with unique environments and challenges. The zones have been meticulously designed for dynamic flight, providing exhilarating dives and soars within cavernous spaces.
The expansion introduces 4 level-up dungeons and 4 maximum-level dungeons across the new zones, with the Nerub’ar Palace raid dungeon featuring eight boss encounters in Azj-Kahet.
