Escape from Tarkov Weapon Tier List: Best Meta Guns (2026)

Tarkov Best Guns Tier List

The three guns worth building right now are the HK 416A5, the DT MDR 7.62×51, and the MK47 Mutant — a low-recoil 5.56 workhorse, a hard-hitting battle rifle that barely needs mods, and a 7.62×39 hammer that shrugs off armor. Everything else is a trade: cheaper but louder, deadlier but needs trader loyalty.

Most Tarkov weapon tier lists stop at the gun: the gun is half the meta. The ammo is the other half. A fully-modded M4 loading the wrong 5.56 bounces off a class 5 rig all day. Rank the guns, sure — but if you skip the round, you’re bringing a $400 flashlight to a firefight. We pair every gun below with its meta round and link the full ammo breakdown where it matters.

This list reflects the 1.0 meta (patch 1.1.5, September 2026). Balance patches move things — where a pick is genuinely contested between sources we will say so.

How we rank these: we cross-check the current community consensus against the game-file weapon and ammo numbers on tarkov.dev, then weigh it against what our boosters actually run in raids every day.

Key takeaways

  • Best all-round gun to main: HK 416A5 (5.56×45) — highest fire rate in its class, near-flat recoil once you build it.
  • Best low-effort killer: DT MDR 7.62×51 — points and deletes, minimal mods, one of the fastest bullet velocities in the game.
  • Meta shifted. Compensators and muzzle brakes now beat suppressors for raw recoil control — budget builds are closer to top-tier than ever.
  • Ammo decides the fight. The right AP round in a B-tier gun beats a meta gun loading flesh rounds. See the EFT Ammo Tier List.
  • You don’t need the whole armory. One 5.56 build, one 7.62×39 build, and the roubles to feed them cover 90% of raids.

The short version — Best Gun per Tier

Tier Guns Why it’s here
S HK 416A5, DT MDR 7.62×51, MK47 Mutant, AK-12, RD-704 Do-everything meta — low recoil built, forgiving, kill through good armor with the right round.
A M4A1, AUG A3, SA-58, SR-25, TX-15 DML, SKS/OP-SKS, AK-105, AS VAL Excellent, but more mod, ammo, or cost-dependent than S.
B AKM, G36, P90, MP7, Vector, SCAR-H, PKM, ADAR 2-15, SVDS, QBZ-191 Situational, budget, or niche — good in the right hands or the right raid.
C M1A, RFB, bolt-action snipers, pistols (FN 5-7 best) Off-meta for standard PMC fights — memes, specialists, or last resorts.

S-Tier — build one of these and you’re never under-gunned

HK 416A5 — the safe answer to “what do I main?” The 416 has the highest fire rate of the meta 5.56 platforms and, once you hang a decent handguard, grip and muzzle device on it, the recoil goes nearly away. It eats M995 or M855A1, both of which punch through the armor you’ll actually meet in raids. You do have to build it. Stock, it kicks; suppressed, you give up ergonomics. Feed it right and it does everything. We ran the 416 as our default carry loadout across the whole 1.1 patch — it’s the first build we hand a new client.

→A tuned S-tier loadout with the right rounds, put together by players who run these builds every wipe — instead of chasing parts across four traders.

DT MDR 7.62×51 — the lowest-effort kill in the game. Several current tier lists put the MDR at the very top: great ergonomics, brutal 7.62×51 ammo, and one of the fastest bullet velocities in the game, with almost no mods required. Point, click, done. It’s expensive and the recoil impulse is snappy, but if you want to think less and kill more, this is the gun. (One source ranks it high-A rather than S — the disagreement is about price)

MK47 Mutant — 7.62×39 that hits like a truck and stays controllable. The Mutant pairs full battle-rifle damage with recoil you can actually manage, plus semi and full-auto flexibility. Loaded with BP it wrecks mid-tier armor for a fraction of a 7.62×51 kit. Downside: heavy, and the ergonomics sag with a full build.

AK-12 & RD-704 — the modern-AK meta. The AK-12 (5.45) and RD-704 (7.62×39) are the AKs that keep up with Western rifles: cheap 60-round mags, wide modding, and low recoil once built. BS/BT for the 12, BP for the 704. This is where budget meets meta.

→ Feeding an S-tier gun means S-tier rounds and the roubles to buy them. We farm the roubles so you can kit every raid: Buy EFT Roubles (from $8.99)

We tested the modern AKs head-to-head with the Western rifles on the same runs — recoil-built, an AK-12 or RD-704 holds its own for a fraction of a 416 kit.

A-Tier — excellent, with a string attached

M4A1 — still great, no longer the automatic pick (contested). This is the biggest disagreement in the meta. Some tier lists keep the M4A1 in S; others dropped it to C, calling it “still viable” rather than dominant. The real answer sits between them: with M995 and a proper recoil build the M4 is still a top-3 shooter — it’s just been power-crept by the 416 and the modern AKs, and it demands more attachments to get there. Main it if you already own the build; don’t chase it as your first meta gun.

AUG A3 — stupidly stable out of the box (contested S). Some rank the AUG A3 top-tier for a reason: flat-shooting with almost no investment, effective at every range. The knocks are mag economy and a handling profile some players never gel with. If low-effort stability is what you want and the MDR’s price scares you, this is the pick.

SA-58, SR-25 — the 7.62×51 semi/DMR cannons. The SA-58 gives you configurable barrels and battle-rifle punch; the SR-25 is a semi-auto penetration monster for players who land shots. Both are expensive and heavy — you’re paying for per-bullet lethality, not spray.

SKS / OP-SKS & TX-15 DML — the budget beams. The SKS got buffed into one of the best value guns in the game — extremely low recoil, deadly with a scope and BP. The TX-15 is the 5.56 semi equivalent. Neither wins a close-range spray war, so play them at range.

AS VAL — the CQB answer. 9×39 SP6/BP out of a compact, integrally-suppressed frame. Inside 80 meters it out-DPS’s almost everything. It falls off hard past that, and the ammo isn’t cheap.

B-Tier — right gun, right raid

The B-tier isn’t bad. New in 1.1: the QBZ-191 (5.8×42) is a light, flat-shooting AR — its buyable round, DBP191, pens class 4 and chips class 5, so it’s a capable mid-tier gun while the meta consensus on it is still forming. The G36 and AK-74M/103 are dependable budget autos with nothing flashy. The P90, MP7, Vector and MP5 are close-quarters tools — huge mags or blistering fire rate, but ammo and range hold them back. The PKM/PKP got real buffs and will melt a doorway if you can live with the ergonomics. SCAR-H is a genuine hammer capped by 20-round mags. The ADAR 2-15 is the cheapest way into a semi-auto beam — a great first-week gun. Bring these when the raid or the budget calls for them.

C-Tier — off-meta for standard fights

The M1A and RFB got hit by recoil nerfs and are hard to recommend over an SA-58. Bolt-action snipers (Mosin, SV-98, M700, AXMC) are a different game — one-tap guns that punish a miss with death; the AXMC in particular has drawn hit-registration complaints. Pistols are last-resort or secondary, with the FN 5-7 the standout for its 20-round mag and low recoil. None of these are your money gun for regular PMC raids.

Which Tarkov Gun Should You Main?

  • Want to stop thinking about your gun? DT MDR 7.62×51. It kills through most armor with zero fuss.
  • Want the highest skill ceiling? HK 416A5 — the better you build and control it, the more it gives.
  • Broke but want to fight the meta? AK-105 or a scoped SKS with BP.
  • Live and die in buildings? AS VAL or a Vector.
  • Want one-shot potential and accept dying to a whiffed bolt? A Mosin or SV-98.

The ammo half of the meta — don’t skip this

A tier list of guns without ammo is half a guide. Every S-tier pick above is only S-tier with the right round: M995 or M855A1 for 5.56, BS/BT for 5.45, BP for 7.62×39, M993/M61 for 7.62×51. Load flesh ammo in any of them and a class 5 rig eats your mag. If you build one thing this wipe, build the habit of matching the round to the armor — it’s the single biggest free upgrade to your win rate.

The full round-by-round breakdown — what pens what, and the cheapest round that still works — is in our EFT Ammo Tier List.

FAQ

What is the best gun in Escape from Tarkov right now?

The HK 416A5 (5.56×45) is the best all-round gun to main — highest fire rate of the meta ARs with near-flat recoil once built. If you want the lowest-effort killer, the DT MDR 7.62×51 is the top pick, and several tier lists rank it #1 outright.

What’s the best meta weapon on a budget?

The AK-105, a scoped SKS, or the AUG A3. All three reach near-meta performance for a fraction of a full 7.62×51 kit — and with the meta favoring loud comp/brake builds over suppressors, cheap guns are closer to the top than usual.

Does the gun or the ammo matter more?

The ammo. A B-tier gun loading proper AP rounds beats a meta gun loading flesh ammo. Match the round to the armor you expect (M995/M855A1 for 5.56, BS/BT for 5.45, BP for 7.62×39, M993/M61 for 7.62×51) before you worry about which rifle is “best.”

What’s the best gun for close quarters?

The AS VAL (9×39, SP6/BP) inside ~80 meters, or an MP7 / Vector for the tightest rooms. High DPS, compact, but they fall off at range.

Is the M4A1 still good in 2026?

Yes, but it’s no longer the automatic best pick. With M995 and a full recoil build the M4A1 is still a top-tier shooter — it’s been power-crept by the HK 416A5 and modern AKs, and it needs more attachments to hit its ceiling. Main it if you already own the build.

What’s the best PvE gun in Tarkov?

Against Scavs and bosses where ammo cost matters more than raw penetration, the SKS, MK47 Mutant, or SA-58 give you the most kills per rouble.

Which guns are locked behind trader loyalty?

Most of the meta — the best barrels, mags and ammo sit at Prapor, Mechanic, Peacekeeper and Jaeger LL3–4. Getting there is its own grind: our Tarkov Leveling Guide covers leveling the traders fast, and the Flea Market Unlock guide covers opening the flea at level 15. Until both are done, half this list is theory.
