Desert Perpetual, the raid that was released in July, is about to return with changes to the mechanics and new rewards. On September 20th, Bungie is unleashing the Epic version — a new challenge for players who think they’ve seen it all. Expect tougher mechanics, fresh loot, and a race that will push fireteams to their limits.
The Epic Desert Perpetual Raid releases on September 20th, at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET / 5 PM UTC). For the first 48 hours of the launch, Contest Mode will be active. This means enemies hit like hell, your Power is capped, and mistakes will wipe your team fast. It’s not just about surviving — it’s about proving you’re the best.
This is also when the World First Race begins. Bungie is streaming the action live, hosted by CbGray and Evanf1997. If your team wants to give it a shot, here’s what you’ll need:
Complete every encounter during Contest Mode, and you’ll walk away with Tier 5 loot, an exclusive emblem, and the guaranteed raid’s Exotic weapon with its catalyst.
The Epic version isn’t just a “hard mode.” Bungie has rebuilt parts of the raid to make it fresh, even for those with 100+ clears. That’s what we know so far:
If you thought you were fully prepared, think again — Epic difficulty is here to force you and your fireteam to be inventive in your approach to the new mechanics. There will be some things you can’t expect, that’s for sure.
One of the biggest changes is the Not Swap modifier. Changing Exotics, legendary gear, or weapon ammo types mid-run now wipes your Super, abilities, and all the Special/Heavy ammo. It’s there during Contest Mode and in Epic difficulty when three or more feats are active.
In short: make sure you have the right build that doesn’t require you to swap anything, lock it in, and play it out.
Loot is a big reason to jump back in. All gear now drops at Tier 2 (Standard) or Tier 3 (Epic), no matter your current Power. Weekly challenges add extra rewards:
For those chasing perfect rolls, the Map and Compass quest unlocks attunement at the Simulant Ansible vendor, letting you target-farm any gear you’ve already acquired. It improves your chances of getting your desired the Desert Perpetual gear from any encounter. And if you manage to defeat all bosses before Koregos, you’ll earn an additional gear drop at the end.
Raids are what make Destiny 2 unique, and an epic version of The Desert Perpetual looks like one of the most exciting updates in recent memory. It’s challenging, rewarding, and designed to keep you coming back week after week.
