TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 releases on August 27, 2026, at 3:00 pm PDT / 6:00 pm EDT / 23:00 BST. Black Temple and the Battle for Mount Hyjal open at the same time, bringing 14 raid bosses, Tier 6 progression, two new raid reputations, epic gems, and the Netherwing daily faction. Arena Season 3 follows on September 1.

The raids are old. The preparation still catches people out. Black Temple has a long attunement chain that runs through Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep, and Mount Hyjal. Several encounters also reward players who prepare resistance gear, extra consumables, and encounter-specific sets before launch rather than after the first night of wipes.

This TBC Phase 3 preparation guide covers the work worth doing before August 27, what can wait until launch, and which deadlines you should not miss. Information is current as of July 30, 2026.

TBC Phase 3 Release Date and Launch Time

TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 launches globally on August 27, 2026. Blizzard set the opening time at 3:00 pm PDT, which is 6:00 pm EDT and 23:00 BST.

Some older pages still show August 13. That date came from an early Blizzard customer support post and is outdated. The official Phase 3 date is August 27.

What Comes Out in TBC Phase 3?

Phase 3 is built around Tier 6 raiding, but the update is larger than two new instances. Netherwing dailies open in Shadowmoon Valley, epic-quality gems enter the gearing cycle, Marks of the Illidari reduce flask costs for prepared characters, and the Arena season changes shortly after the raids launch.

Phase 3 Content What It Adds
Black Temple Nine-boss Tier 6 raid ending with Illidan Stormrage
Battle for Mount Hyjal Five-boss Tier 6 raid ending with Archimonde
Netherwing Daily quest faction and six Netherwing Drake mounts at Exalted
Epic Gems New high-end gems from Phase 3 raids, Mining, and Jewelcrafting designs
Arena Season 3 New PvP gear and updated Arena progression beginning September 1
Raid Reputations Ashtongue Deathsworn and Scale of the Sands rewards

TBC Phase 3 Raids at a Glance

Raid Final Boss Bosses Attunement Reputation
Black Temple Illidan Stormrage 9 Akama quest chain plus Mount Hyjal attunement Ashtongue Deathsworn
Battle for Mount Hyjal Archimonde 5 The Vials of Eternity Scale of the Sands

What Should You Prepare First for TBC Phase 3?

Do not start with a random shopping list. Phase 3 preparation has a clear order because attunements depend on raid access, reputation is time-gated, and some purchases become more expensive as launch gets closer.

Priority Preparation Why It Comes First
1 Black Temple and Mount Hyjal attunements You cannot enter the raids without completing the required questlines
2 Phase 2 raid gear Guilds and pugs will build opening-week rosters around prepared Tier 5 characters
3 Resistance and encounter sets Mother Shahraz and Illidan are much rougher when the raid starts building sets after reaching them
4 Reputation requirements Exalted reputations unlock cheaper Shattrath flasks from Marks of the Illidari
5 Arena Season 2 points Unspent points convert to Honor when Season 2 ends on August 18
6 Consumables and enchanting materials Demand usually jumps when thousands of players replace gear in the same week
7 Netherwing reputation The faction opens with Phase 3, but the daily grind cannot be completed in one sitting

Finish the Black Temple Attunement Before Launch

Black Temple has the most important preparation chain in Phase 3. The attunement starts in Shadowmoon Valley through the Aldor or Scryer quest hub and follows Akama’s story through open-world quests, group content, and three different raids.

The chain is often described as a 16-step attunement, although the exact number depends on how individual conversations and follow-up quests are counted. The important part is the raid dependency. You cannot finish it by running solo quests in one evening.

Black Temple Attunement Raid Steps

Serpentshrine Cavern: Kill Fathom-Lord Karathress for “The Secret Compromised.”

Tempest Keep: Kill Al’ar while wearing the Ashtongue Cowl for “Ruse of the Ashtongue.” Put the disguise on before the pull. Forgetting it means the kill does not complete the quest.

Battle for Mount Hyjal: Kill Rage Winterchill for “An Artifact From the Past.” This step cannot be completed until Phase 3 opens because Rage Winterchill is the first boss of Mount Hyjal.

The chain finishes with “A Distraction for Akama.” After returning to Xi’ri, you receive the Medallion of Karabor and complete the opening version of the Black Temple attunement.

This is why the smart move is to complete every available step before August 27. You should enter launch night needing only Rage Winterchill and the short follow-up section, not the entire Shadowmoon Valley chain.

Why the Medallion of Karabor Matters

The Medallion of Karabor is not only the key connected to the Black Temple attunement. It also gives 40 Shadow Resistance, making it useful for the Mother Shahraz encounter later in the raid.

Characters that may raid Black Temple should complete the chain for the necklace even when another character has already handled the basic access requirement. That 40 resistance removes a meaningful chunk from the gear you need to find elsewhere.

→ Complete the raid quests and enter Black Temple on schedule: TBC raid and attunement services

Complete the Battle for Mount Hyjal Attunement

Hyjal attune art

The Battle for Mount Hyjal is a five-boss raid inside the Caverns of Time. The encounter order is Rage Winterchill, Anetheron, Kaz’rogal, Azgalor, and Archimonde.

Access is tied to “The Vials of Eternity.” The quest requires the Vashj’s Vial Remnant from Lady Vashj in Serpentshrine Cavern and Kael’s Vial Remnant from Kael’thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep.

The chain is shorter than Black Temple’s attunement, but the bosses it requires are not free. A late start can leave you searching for Vashj and Kael’thas groups when most organized guilds have already moved their main focus to Tier 6.

Mount Hyjal attunement also feeds directly into Black Temple progression because the Akama chain sends you to Rage Winterchill. Finish the Vials before launch and keep the quest log clean for the follow-up.

Gear Up Before Phase 3 Raid Rosters Lock

Attunement opens the door. Gear decides whether the raid leader puts you on the roster.

Opening-week groups will generally expect a character built from Phase 2 raid gear, useful Badge of Justice pieces, correct enchants, and working gems. A freshly leveled character in dungeon blues may technically reach the entrance, but it is competing for a spot against players with weeks of Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep loot.

Best Catch-Up Gear Sources

Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep: Your main sources of Tier 5 gear and the strongest preparation upgrades.

Karazhan, Gruul’s Lair, and Magtheridon’s Lair: Still useful for missing trinkets, weapons, tier pieces, and off-slots.

Badge of Justice gear: Reliable upgrades that do not depend on winning a contested raid drop.

Arena Season 2 gear: A practical fallback for slots where the PvE item refused to drop, especially after rating requirements are removed.

Do not replace a working item simply because another piece has a slightly higher item level. Check hit, spell hit, expertise, defense, and set bonuses first. Phase 3 bosses will punish a badly balanced character more than a missing handful of theoretical DPS.

Prepare the Required Phase 3 Resistance Sets

Resistance gear is not equally important for every boss. Mother Shahraz places the main Shadow Resistance requirement on the raid, while Illidan’s Flames of Azzinoth require Fire Resistance from the assigned tanks. A third stamina-focused set can help low-health players survive High Warlord Naj’entus.

Encounter Recommended Set Who Needs It
Mother Shahraz Shadow Resistance Most or all progression raiders
Illidan Stormrage Fire Resistance Tanks assigned to the Flames of Azzinoth
Illidan Stormrage Shear avoidance set The main Illidan tank
High Warlord Naj’entus High-stamina set Players entering the raid with low health

Build a Shadow Resistance Set for Mother Shahraz

Mother Shahraz uses Fatal Attraction to teleport three non-tank players to another part of the room. Those players take repeated Shadow damage until they spread roughly 25 yards apart.

For early progression, many raids target 244 Shadow Resistance after buffs. This gives a reliable level of partial resistance without forcing every slot into weak green resistance gear.

Shadow Resistance Target

A Priest’s Shadow Protection contributes 70 resistance. The Medallion of Karabor adds another 40. That leaves approximately 134 Shadow Resistance to obtain from gear, gems, enchants, or other effects.

Try to keep your normal hit or spell-hit requirements while assembling the set. Reaching the resistance target and then missing half your spells is not good preparation. Duplicate Phase 1 or Phase 2 items can be gemmed and enchanted for resistance without destroying your normal raid set.

Random level 70 “of Shadow Protection” bind-on-equip greens are another route. Ethereum Prison Keys in Netherstorm can produce random gear from prison encounters, including resistance-focused pieces. The Auction House will also fill with these items, usually at much higher prices as guilds approach Mother Shahraz.

Phase 3 adds crafted Shadow Resistance gear connected to Ashtongue Deathsworn reputation, but early pieces require Hearts of Darkness from Tier 6 raids. They will not solve your first-week problem cheaply. Build a usable set now and replace it later.

Prepare Fire Resistance Tanks for Illidan

During the Illidan Stormrage encounter, the Flames of Azzinoth need dedicated tanks. Early progression groups commonly use three tanks in total: one on Illidan and two Fire Resistance tanks, one for each Flame.

The Flame tanks should prepare around 244 Fire Resistance after buffs. Badge of Justice equipment can cover several major slots, while older attunement rewards and resistance items fill the remaining gaps.

Useful Illidan Fire Resistance Items

The Badge of Justice vendor offers Fire Resistance boots, legs, chest, and gloves for a combined cost of 100 Badges. Tanks may also have a Fire Resistance ring and necklace from earlier Tempest Keep preparation.

Petrified Scarab from Ahn’Qiraj gives 100 resistance to a selected magic school for a short duration. Experienced groups can use it to reduce the amount of permanent resistance gear needed, but relying on old trinket timing is less forgiving than wearing a complete set.

Build an Illidan Shear Set for the Main Tank

Shear reduces the tank’s maximum health by 60% for seven seconds if it connects. The attack cannot miss, but it can be dodged, parried, or blocked.

That changes the usual avoidance calculation. Miss chance does not help against Shear, so Warrior and Paladin tanks build around approximately 101.8% combined dodge, parry, and block rather than counting miss toward the standard 102.4% avoidance cap.

Several useful mitigation pieces already drop in Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep. Examples include Wristguards of Determination, Girdle of the Immovable, Boots of the Resilient, Ring of Sundered Souls, and Seventh Ring of the Tirisfalen.

This set is a tank assignment, not a raid-wide farm. Decide who is tanking Illidan now. Giving the right drops to that player before Phase 3 is much easier than trying to build the set after reaching the final boss.

Consider a Stamina Set for High Warlord Naj’entus

High Warlord Naj’entus is the first Black Temple boss. Breaking his Tidal Shield deals roughly 8,500 Frost damage to the raid, while the player impaled by a Naj’entus Spine takes heavy physical damage before the spine is removed.

A special stamina set is not mandatory for a normally geared Phase 2 character. It becomes useful when a player enters Black Temple below roughly 10,000 health and risks dying to the shield break after taking other damage.

PvP gear is useful here because it carries high stamina without requiring a raid drop. Healers should also know when the shield is about to break rather than treating it like random raid damage.

Finish the Reputations Needed for Shattrath Flasks

Phase 3 raid trash drops Marks of the Illidari. These tokens can be exchanged for Shattrath versions of TBC flasks, but only by characters that meet the required reputation conditions.

Flask users should work toward Exalted with The Sha’tar, Cenarion Expedition, and either the Aldor or the Scryers. The Aldor or Scryer requirement is usually already handled by characters using their best shoulder inscription, but Sha’tar and Cenarion Expedition can still be unfinished on raid-logging alts.

Fast Reputation Options

The Sha’tar: Run Tempest Keep dungeons, with The Botanica being a common reputation farm.

Cenarion Expedition: Run The Steamvault and finish any remaining Outland quest chains that grant reputation.

Aldor: Turn in Marks of Sargeras and Fel Armaments.

Scryers: Turn in Sunfury Signets and Arcane Tomes.

Marks of the Illidari can cut a large part of the weekly flask bill. They do nothing for a character that arrives in Phase 3 without the required reputations.

Start the Netherwing Grind on August 27

Netherwing Drake Farm

The Netherwing faction opens with Phase 3 on Netherwing Ledge, the floating outpost in southeastern Shadowmoon Valley. A flying mount is required to reach the area normally.

Players earn reputation through daily quests and repeatable Netherwing Egg turn-ins. At Exalted, Drake Dealer Hurlunk sells six epic Netherwing Drake colours:

Azure Netherwing Drake, Cobalt Netherwing Drake, Onyx Netherwing Drake, Purple Netherwing Drake, Veridian Netherwing Drake, and Violet Netherwing Drake.

You also need Artisan Riding and completion of the Blood Oath of the Netherwing portion of the questline.

This grind is limited more by time than difficulty. Daily quests have a cap, so missing a week cannot be repaired with one long Sunday session. Netherwing Eggs speed up the process, but competition will be brutal during the first days.

→ Reach Exalted and choose your drake: TBC mounts

Prepare Mining and Jewelcrafting for Epic Gems

Phase 3 introduces epic gems, one of the strongest per-slot upgrades available in TBC. They matter more on high-value socket bonuses and endgame items that will stay equipped for several months.

How to Get Epic Gems in Phase 3

Battle for Mount Hyjal Mining: Characters with 375 Mining can obtain epic gems from deposits inside the raid.

Black Temple drops: Epic gems can appear as rare drops inside Black Temple.

Jewelcrafting: Indormi inside Mount Hyjal sells new Jewelcrafting designs used to cut the gems.

Do not blindly socket every new gem on day one. Save the expensive cuts for Tier 6 items, weapons, long-term best-in-slot pieces, and slots where the new gem fixes an important cap.

Jewelcrafters should reach 375 before launch. Miners need 375 as well if they expect to interact with the Hyjal deposits rather than watching someone else collect them.

→ Level the required profession before Phase 3: TBC character and profession services

Spend Arena Points Before Season 2 Ends

Arena Season 2 ends on August 18, 2026, with the weekly realm restarts. Any Arena Points left on the character convert to Honor at a rate of 1 Arena Point to 10 Honor.

Season 3 begins on September 1. Season 2 equipment moves to Area 52 vendors at a discount and no longer requires an Arena rating. This creates a useful catch-up window for players who need a weapon, stamina piece, or replacement for a Phase 2 raid item that never dropped.

Arena Points are harder to replace than Honor. Spend them on useful gear before the reset instead of accepting the automatic conversion without checking the vendors.

TBC Arena Transition Plan

Before August 18: Finish your weekly cap and spend Arena Points on Season 2 gear.

After the reset: Use carried Honor where it gives a real PvE or PvP upgrade.

From September 1: Start earning Season 3 rating and points for the new gear set.

→ Finish the season before the reset: TBC Arena Point cap or TBC 3v3 rating

Stock the Best Phase 3 Consumables

Raid consumable prices tend to move before the content arrives. Phase 3 gives players several reasons to buy the same herbs, resistance materials, and enchanting components at once, so the week after August 27 is not the ideal time to start shopping.

Elixir of Demonslaying

There are several demon bosses across Black Temple and Mount Hyjal, making Elixir of Demonslaying a strong encounter-specific consumable for physical damage dealers.

The effect lasts only five minutes, but the materials are simple: one Gromsblood and one Ghost Mushroom. If finished elixirs are overpriced, farm or buy the herbs separately and ask an Alchemist to craft them.

Stratholme Holy Water

Stratholme Holy Water deals area damage to Undead enemies. Mount Hyjal contains long waves of Undead trash, which makes the item useful for faster wave control and extra burst damage.

The supply comes from crates inside Stratholme. Protection Paladins that already farm the dungeon may have a large stack sitting in the bank. Everyone else should collect some before the entire server remembers the item exists.

Horde Scourgebane Consumables

Horde characters can obtain Scourgebane Infusion and Scourgebane Draught through repeatable Ghostlands quests.

Turning in 10 Spinal Dust gives Scourgebane Infusion, which grants 15 spell damage against Undead for 30 minutes. Turning in 10 Rotting Hearts gives Scourgebane Draught, which grants 30 attack power against Undead for 30 minutes.

Both materials are bind on equip and can be farmed on a faster character before being mailed to the raider that needs the buff. These effects are especially useful on Mount Hyjal trash and also work against Undead bosses such as Rage Winterchill and Teron Gorefiend.

Buy Enchanting Materials Before Launch Week

Compare your Phase 3 best-in-slot list with the gear you already own. Then write down the enchants required for every slot you expect to replace.

This sounds basic. It is also where players lose hundreds of gold. A new raid item drops, five people need the same enchant, and the Auction House price doubles because nobody bought the materials beforehand.

Prioritize expensive weapon enchants, leg kits, shoulder inscriptions, spellthreads, armor kits, resistance enchants, and rare primals. Do not enchant a speculative item in advance, but owning the materials gives you the option to equip a real upgrade immediately.

Study Black Temple and Mount Hyjal Bosses Now

Phase 3 raids are old enough that there is no good excuse for discovering the main wipe mechanic during the pull. Your guild may use different positioning, but the underlying mechanics are known.

Teron Gorefiend deserves extra attention. Shadow of Death turns a selected player into a ghost and gives that player responsibility for controlling the constructs that spawn. One player failing the ghost sequence can wipe the entire raid.

Practice the Teron Gorefiend ghost simulator before launch. It takes a few minutes and removes one of the dumbest ways to lose an otherwise clean pull.

Players should also understand Archimonde’s Doomfire and Air Burst, Mother Shahraz positioning, Reliquary of Souls interrupts, Illidari Council assignments, Naj’entus spine timing, and the Fire Elemental tank paths during Illidan.

You do not need to memorize a twenty-page guide for every boss. You do need to know the mechanic that kills 24 other people when it lands on you.

What Can Wait Until Phase 3 Launch?

Not everything needs to be finished before August 27. Netherwing does not open until the patch, Rage Winterchill is unavailable until Mount Hyjal opens, and Hearts of Darkness cannot enter the market until players begin clearing Tier 6 content.

Your goal before launch is to remove every avoidable delay. Finish the old raids, reputations, gear sets, professions, and shopping while those activities are still easy to organize. Leave only the genuinely new Phase 3 steps for opening night.

Get Raid-Ready for TBC Phase 3

Phase 3 preparation is not one grind. It is a chain of smaller jobs with different deadlines. Arena Points expire first. Attunements depend on old raids. Resistance sets need specific gear. Netherwing starts late but then takes weeks.

Missing one consumable will not ruin your phase. Missing the Al’ar quest because you forgot the Ashtongue Cowl can block the entire Black Temple chain. Handle the requirements first, then worry about perfecting the smaller upgrades.

Starting Phase 3 on a fresh character or unfinished alt?
The Ready to Raid Bundle combines the main attunement and gearing work, while the full TBC Classic boost catalogue covers raids, reputations, professions, PvP, and mounts.

Final Thoughts

The TBC Phase 3 release date is August 27, 2026. That leaves enough time to prepare, but not enough time to keep ignoring a half-finished attunement until launch week.

Start with The Vials of Eternity and the available Black Temple quests. Lock in your Phase 2 gear, identify the tanks responsible for Illidan, and build the resistance sets before prices jump. Spend Arena Points before August 18. After that, sort out professions, consumables, enchants, and boss practice.

When Phase 3 opens, you should be killing Rage Winterchill and finishing the last Black Temple steps. You should not be standing in Shadowmoon Valley asking where the Akama chain begins.

TBC Phase 3 FAQ

When is the TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 release date?

TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 launches globally on August 27, 2026, at 3:00 pm PDT, 6:00 pm EDT, and 23:00 BST. Black Temple and the Battle for Mount Hyjal open at launch.

What comes out in TBC Phase 3?

Phase 3 adds Black Temple, the Battle for Mount Hyjal, the Netherwing daily faction, six Netherwing Drake mounts, epic gems, Ashtongue Deathsworn reputation, Scale of the Sands reputation, and Arena Season 3 on September 1.

How many bosses are in the TBC Phase 3 raids?

There are 14 bosses in total. Black Temple has nine bosses ending with Illidan Stormrage, while the Battle for Mount Hyjal has five bosses ending with Archimonde.

Do I need an attunement for Black Temple?

Yes. At Phase 3 launch, Black Temple requires the Akama attunement chain and access to the Battle for Mount Hyjal. The quests send you into Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep, and Mount Hyjal before awarding the Medallion of Karabor.

Do I need to clear Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep for Black Temple?

You need specific boss kills rather than a formal full clear. The chain requires Fathom-Lord Karathress in Serpentshrine Cavern and Al’ar in Tempest Keep while wearing the Ashtongue Cowl. In practice, players often join groups clearing most or all of the raid.

How do I attune to the Battle for Mount Hyjal?

Complete “The Vials of Eternity” by obtaining Vashj’s Vial Remnant from Lady Vashj and Kael’s Vial Remnant from Kael’thas Sunstrider. The questline is also needed to progress through the Black Temple attunement.

How long does the Black Temple attunement take?

Expect several play sessions because the chain contains open-world quests, group quests, and boss objectives in Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep, and Mount Hyjal. Complete the pre-Hyjal steps before August 27 so only the Rage Winterchill section remains.

What resistance gear is needed for Black Temple?

Progression raids commonly use Shadow Resistance sets for Mother Shahraz. Tanks assigned to the Flames of Azzinoth need Fire Resistance for Illidan, and the main Illidan tank may use a dedicated avoidance set for Shear.

How much Shadow Resistance is needed for Mother Shahraz?

Many early progression groups target approximately 244 Shadow Resistance after buffs. Shadow Protection adds 70 and the Medallion of Karabor adds 40, leaving around 134 resistance to obtain from equipment, gems, and enchants.

How do I get Netherwing Drake mounts?

Reach Exalted with the Netherwing through daily quests and Netherwing Egg turn-ins, complete Blood Oath of the Netherwing, and learn Artisan Riding. Drake Dealer Hurlunk then sells six Netherwing Drake colours.

How do I get epic gems in TBC Phase 3?

Epic gems come from mining inside the Battle for Mount Hyjal with 375 Mining and as rare drops in Black Temple. Jewelcrafting designs can be purchased from Indormi inside Mount Hyjal.

When does TBC Arena Season 2 end?

Arena Season 2 ends on August 18, 2026, with the weekly realm restarts. Remaining Arena Points convert to Honor at a rate of 1 Arena Point to 10 Honor.

When does TBC Arena Season 3 start?

Arena Season 3 begins on September 1, 2026, with the weekly realm restarts. New Season 3 equipment becomes available from Arena vendors in Shattrath and Nagrand.

What should I do first to prepare for TBC Phase 3?

Finish The Vials of Eternity and every available Black Temple attunement quest first. Then complete Phase 2 gearing, resistance sets, required reputations, Arena Point spending, professions, consumables, and enchanting materials.
