AION 2 shows two numbers that players often mix together: Item Level, usually called Gear Score or GS, and Combat Power, usually shortened to CP. They are connected, but they do different jobs. Item Level is the number content gates check. Combat Power is a broader estimate of how strong your character is after gear, stats, skills and permanent systems are taken into account.
This difference matters after level 45. You can raise GS enough to enter a dungeon and still feel weak inside it. You can also gain useful damage or survival from a pet, title, skill or Stigma upgrade without seeing the same increase in GS. The right upgrade depends on what is blocking you now.
AION 2 GS vs CP at a Glance
Gear Score and Combat Power Are Not the Same Thing
On Global, the official character profile shows both values separately. The game calls the dungeon-gate number Item Level. Players often call the same number Gear Score. Combat Power appears as a much larger number and is used as a wider strength rating.
| Metric | Where Shown | What It Controls | What It Misses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Item Level / GS | Character profile and dungeon entry panels | Whether an activity lets you enter; broad gear and upgrade progress | How good your stat lines are, your full skill setup, pet collection value and whether your build can pass a real DPS or survival check |
| Combat Power / CP | Character profile header | A wider estimate of character strength | Fight mechanics, class execution, party buffs, movement, uptime and whether your stats are correct for a specific encounter |
Think of GS as an access number first. If an Expedition requires a certain Item Level, being one point below can block entry. CP is more useful when two characters already meet the gate and you want to know why one has stronger stats, higher skill investment or more permanent power.
Neither number is a complete DPS meter. A player can have enough GS and CP and still fail an enrage because the rotation is wrong, important skills are underleveled or boss mechanics cut their uptime.
What Raises Gear Score
Global Item Level is not only the base number printed on your normal gear. Current character data shows several systems feeding the total. The safest rule is to include only inputs that can be seen in the Global client or official character data.
| System | Before | After | GS Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equip higher-Item-Level gear | Lower base Item Level in the slot | Higher base Item Level in the slot | Yes, by the difference between the equipped pieces |
| Enhancement | For example, +4 | +5 | +1 Item Level for that enhancement step |
| Daevanion Board | Crystal unspent | Crystal spent on a node | +1 Item Level per Daevanion Crystal spent |
| Manastone / Soulstone line | Empty or lower-grade line | Added or higher-grade line | Current Global data adds Item Level by line grade |
| Arcana | Lower-grade or lower-level card | Higher-grade or levelled card | Yes, from the card’s own Item Level and levels |
| Noble Belt / Amulet | Lower grade or enhancement | Higher grade or enhancement | Yes, because these special slots have their own Item Level |
Daevanion is the part many players miss. A board node is not only a stat or skill choice. Every crystal spent also adds Item Level. This is why unfinished Regional Quests and Sealed Dungeons can leave a fresh level-45 character behind the next GS gate even when the normal armor looks reasonable.
Wings, pets and titles do not add Item Level by ownership alone on the current Global character data. They can still add useful stats. That difference is exactly why GS and CP should not be treated as the same number.
What Raises Combat Power
Combat Power is broader, but the exact weighting formula is not published in a way that lets us assign a clean CP value to every stat. Use the Global character sheet before and after an upgrade when the result matters. The table below separates systems that clearly add combat value from systems that also change GS.
| System | GS Change? | CP Change? | Permanent? | How to Verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal gear stats and enhancement | Yes | Yes when combat stats increase | Gear-dependent | Compare profile before and after equipping or enhancing |
| Daevanion Board | Yes | Yes through stats and skill levels | Yes, with points refundable for rerouting | Spend a node, then check Item Level, CP and the changed stat |
| Skills and Stigmas | No direct GS from the skill level itself | Can raise CP and real output | Point investment can be reset | Check CP before and after a skill or Stigma level change |
| Noble Belt and Amulet | Yes | Yes through their stats | Permanent special-slot track | Compare the slot at each enhancement or morph step |
| Pets | No | Yes when owned or Genus bonuses add combat stats | Yes | Check owned pet stats and CP after unlock or level-up |
| Titles and Wings | No | Can change CP when they add combat stats | Collection-dependent | Check the exact stat bonus, not the collection count |
| Arcana | Yes | Yes through Pantheon stats and skill lines | Card setup | Compare both numbers when changing a card |
Pets are a good example of CP without GS. Each owned Global pet can add small permanent stats, and Pet Genus can add stronger combat lines as Insight grows. None of that adds Item Level from pet ownership itself. If this is one of your missing permanent systems, see the current pet leveling options.
Why Two Characters With Similar GS Can Have Different CP
Two profiles can sit near the same Item Level and still have different Combat Power because Item Level counts the access value of upgrades, while CP reacts to the combat stats behind those upgrades. One character may have more Daevanion points spent on useful damage nodes, stronger skill levels and pet bonuses. Another may have similar GS from gear pieces and enhancement but weaker permanent systems.
The cleanest test is the same character before and after one upgrade. Record GS and CP, make one change, then read both values again. This avoids class differences and avoids comparing two players with different titles, stats or builds.
| Profile Check | GS | CP | What Changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before | Record current Item Level | Record current Combat Power | Nothing |
| After Daevanion node | Should rise by crystals spent | May also rise from the node’s stat or skill | Board point spent |
| After pet stat unlock | Should stay the same | Can rise | Owned pet or Genus combat stat added |
| After higher-Item-Level weapon | Usually rises | Usually rises | Base gear and combat stats improved |
This is also why public character rankings should be read carefully. A Ranger and a Templar with similar GS are not a controlled CP comparison. Class formulas, equipped stats, skills and build choices differ. Use public profiles to inspect systems, not to create one universal CP target for every class.
Fix Permanent Power Before Chasing a Tiny Gear Upgrade
If you are stuck after 45, check cheap permanent power before spending hours on a very small random gear improvement. This does not mean permanent systems are always better. It means you should compare the gain, cost and time.
| Upgrade | One-Time / Repeatable | Cost / Time | GS / CP Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sealed Dungeon completion | One-time home-map clears | Travel and solo clears | Daevanion Crystals raise GS when spent and improve board stats / skills |
| Stronghold / belt progress | One-time source of belt scrolls | Stronghold clears plus upgrade costs | Belt enhancement raises its Item Level and defensive stats |
| Empyrean Traces / Monolith | One-time collection track | Map collection and Monolith thresholds | Feeds Revelation Amulet upgrades and related permanent rewards |
| Pet ownership and levels | Permanent collection | Pet souls and time | No GS from ownership, but owned stats can raise CP |
| Skill / Stigma levels | Permanent resources with resettable allocation | Skill Points, Wisdom Stones or Stigma Shards | No direct Item Level from the skill point, but stronger skills can raise CP and output |
A common mistake is to farm another armor piece while sitting on unspent Daevanion Crystals. Those crystals are guaranteed Item Level once spent, and the route can also give Attack, Critical Hit, Damage Boost or skill levels. If the next board node is useful, that can beat waiting for a small random sidegrade.
The same logic applies to the Noble Belt and Revelation Amulet. If a short Stronghold or Monolith step completes the next guaranteed upgrade, do that before spending a full session hoping for a tiny drop.
When Better Gear Is Still the Right Upgrade
Permanent systems do not make normal gear unimportant. Gear becomes the right answer when a major slot is behind, when the next dungeon tier drops a clear upgrade or when a crafted item solves a real stat problem.
| Problem | Better Fix |
|---|---|
| Your weapon is far below the rest of your gear | Weapon upgrade. It raises GS and usually gives a much larger combat gain than a minor collection step. |
| You are below the next Expedition entry gate | Use the cheapest verified Item Level gains first: Daevanion, useful enhancement, special slots or a real gear replacement. |
| You meet the gate but damage is weak | Check CP sources, skill levels, Stigmas, board route, weapon stats and actual rotation before chasing GS alone. |
| A dungeon drops several upgrades for your current set | Spend Odyle Energy there instead of over-investing in temporary gear. |
| A profession can craft a stronger weapon or accessory | Compare the crafted item with your current drop and the material cost before farming another random piece. |
Expeditions remain the main repeatable source of stronger PvE gear, so use the current AION 2 dungeons route when your next useful upgrade comes from a clear. Crafted alternatives also matter, especially for weapons and accessories, so check the current AION 2 professions options when crafting is cheaper or more direct than waiting for a drop.
Do not enhance every temporary piece to the same level. A cheap guaranteed step can be good for a gate, but the cost rises as you push deeper into an item. Save large investments for gear you expect to keep or transfer.
Meeting the Entry GS Does Not Mean You Are Ready
A dungeon entry panel answers one question: can this character enter? It does not answer whether the party can clear the DPS check, survive mistakes or handle the boss before enrage.
Once you meet the displayed Item Level, look at the rest of the build. Check CP, weapon quality, core skill and Stigma levels, Daevanion route, useful combat stats and defensive tools. Then check the encounter itself. Some mechanics will kill a player even with much higher numbers if they are handled incorrectly.
| Question | Use This Number / Check |
|---|---|
| Can I enter? | Displayed Item Level / GS requirement |
| Is my build stronger than another build at similar GS? | CP plus the actual stats, skills and setup behind it |
| Can I comfortably clear this dungeon? | Mechanics, damage, survival and party performance, not GS alone |
This article intentionally stops before giving practical dungeon thresholds. Those values depend on the dungeon, class, role and current Global tuning. For the next step, use the AION 2 practical dungeon requirements guide, which separates the entry gate from a realistic clear target.
