Soul Splinters are one of the core character-building systems in Diablo 4 Season 15. These seasonal socketables go into Jewelry and combine a powerful bonus with a drawback that can completely change how a build functions.
The difficult part is not simply finding a Soul Splinter. If you need one specific effect, you must farm the correct type, keep enough matching duplicates, and use Amalgamation in the Horadric Cube until it reaches the final Abyssal rarity.

What Are Soul Splinters in Diablo 4?
Soul Splinters are Season 15 gems associated with powerful demons and artifacts from Diablo history. Each one grants a major positive effect together with a built-in liability.
They can be equipped among your available Jewelry sockets, with a maximum of three Soul Splinters active on a character.
There are eight Soul Splinter families:
- Splinter of Anguish — Andariel;
- Splinter of Sin — Azmodan;
- Splinter of Lies — Belial;
- Splinter of the Black Soulstone;
- Splinter of Pain — Duriel;
- Splinter of the Mother — Lilith;
- Splinter of Hellfire — Na-Krul;
- Splinter of Damnation — Skarn.
Soul Splinters vs Splinters of Evil
Season 15 contains two systems with very similar names, but they serve completely different purposes.

Soul Splinter Rarities Explained
Every Soul Splinter family has four live rarity tiers.

Abyssal is therefore not a separate Soul Splinter type. It is the Unique-rarity final version of Anguish, Sin, Lies, Black Soulstone, Pain, Mother, Hellfire, or Damnation.
How to Farm Soul Splinters
Soul Splinters can appear while playing Season 15 content, but purely random farming becomes inefficient when a build needs one exact type.
The most useful current target-farming method is to look for the Gem Reserve that matches the resistance provided by your Soul Splinter in Nightmare Dungeons.
Seven of the eight Soul Splinters have a direct Gem Reserve match.

A matching Reserve does not guarantee that every reward chest will contain your Soul Splinter. It narrows the farming route and gives you a way to actively target the correct family instead of relying entirely on random drops.
Why Black Soulstone Is Different
The Black Soulstone is the exception because its base property is All Stats rather than a single resistance. There is no normal Gem Reserve that directly maps to it.
If Black Soulstone is your target, expect a less deterministic farm and keep useful higher-rarity copies whenever they appear.
How to Farm Soul Splinters Efficiently
Nightmare Dungeons and Escalating Nightmare Dungeons are particularly useful because they let you combine normal endgame progression with Gem Reserve hunting.
A practical farming loop is:
- Decide which Soul Splinter your build needs.
- Match it to the correct Gem Reserve.
- Prioritize Nightmare Dungeon routes that contain that Reserve.
- Open the associated reward chests instead of rushing directly past them.
- Keep every copy of the correct Soul Splinter, including Lesser and Rare versions.
- Use higher-rarity direct drops to shorten the Amalgamation chain.
- Combine matching copies whenever you reach five of the same rarity.
The main efficiency mistake is farming “Soul Splinters” as one generic loot category. Once you know the exact Splinter your build needs, Reserve targeting gives the grind a clear objective.
How to Upgrade Soul Splinters to Abyssal
Soul Splinters upgrade through Amalgamation in the Horadric Cube.
The recipe follows a simple 5:1 ratio: place five Soul Splinters of the same family and the same rarity into the appropriate Amalgamation recipe to receive one copy at the next rarity.

The type must also match. Five random Lesser Soul Splinters cannot be converted into whichever Splinter you want.
For example:
- 5x Lesser Splinter of Anguish → 1x Splinter of Anguish;
- 5x Splinter of Anguish → 1x Greater Splinter of Anguish;
- 5x Greater Splinter of Anguish → 1x Abyssal Splinter of Anguish.
How Many Soul Splinters Do You Need for One Abyssal?
If every item starts as a Lesser Splinter and you receive no direct Rare or Legendary drops, the complete chain requires:
- 5 Lesser for 1 Rare;
- 25 Lesser for 1 Legendary;
- 125 Lesser for 1 Abyssal.
That is the worst-case crafting calculation, not necessarily the number of drops you will actually need. Any direct Rare or Legendary copy skips part of the 125-Lesser conversion chain.
Fastest Route to an Abyssal Soul Splinter
Target the correct Soul Splinter instead of relying on random drops, then convert duplicates through the Horadric Cube.

The table below uses the current Patch 3.2.1 live values. This distinction matters because many Season 15 PTR articles still show older and substantially stronger numbers for Anguish, Pain, Hellfire, and Black Soulstone.

Upgrading a Soul Splinter strengthens its main benefit, or in the case of Mother and Damnation improves the threshold or duration. Most defining drawbacks remain active at every rarity.

For the six Splinters based on one resistance, the base resistance scales through 250 → 1,750 → 2,625 → 4,375.
Hellfire instead scales through 35 → 250 → 375 → 625 Resistance to All Elements, while Black Soulstone grants 7 → 20 → 30 → 50 All Stats.
Which Soul Splinter Should You Upgrade First?
There is no universal Soul Splinter that every class should upgrade first. The correct choice depends on whether your build can absorb the drawback without disabling an important damage, resource, or defensive mechanic.
That distinction is more useful than a generic class ranking:
- Anguish rewards builds that benefit from both Attack Speed and Critical Strike Chance but can sustain 30% higher Primary Resource costs.
- Sin adds a large Life increase but can hurt builds whose damage or rotation depends on a large Maximum Primary Resource pool.
- Lies is a farming-focused choice for Experience, Gold, and materials, but permanent Weakened and Vulnerable make the downside real.
- Black Soulstone can scale extremely high in dense content but converts that offensive scaling into increasing damage taken.
- Pain supplies reliable Damage Reduction at the cost of a major Movement Speed penalty.
- Mother provides Unhindered movement and easy Vulnerable application but eventually forces a four-second Stun.
- Hellfire offers a direct multiplicative damage bonus but is fundamentally incompatible with builds that require Critical Strikes.
- Damnation increases farming pressure and Experience after Elite Pack kills but also deliberately raises Monster Power.
For class-specific choices, use the finished build as the source of truth. This guide is intentionally focused on obtaining and upgrading the item rather than replacing individual class build recommendations.
Important Soul Splinter Build Mistakes
Using Old PTR Values
This is currently the easiest mistake to make because many early Season 15 tables remain indexed.
If a source tells you Abyssal Anguish gives 35%, Pain gives 40% Damage Reduction, Hellfire gives 100% multiplicative damage, or Black Soulstone gives 5% damage per Soul, you are looking at pre-launch PTR values rather than the current Patch 3.2.1 items.
Ignoring the Drawback at Abyssal Rarity
Abyssal means the positive side of the Soul Splinter has reached its maximum tier. It does not mean the drawback disappears.
An Abyssal Hellfire still removes Critical Strike Chance. An Abyssal Anguish still increases Resource Costs. An Abyssal Pain still reduces Movement Speed.
Salvaging or Discarding Lower-Rarity Copies
A weak-looking Lesser Splinter is still Amalgamation material. If it belongs to the family you are upgrading, keep it until you know that you no longer need another 5:1 conversion.
Trying to Upgrade Mixed Soul Splinters
Amalgamation requires both the same type and the same rarity. Five different Lesser Splinters cannot become a targeted Rare Splinter.
Equipping Duplicate Soul Splinters for Double Effect
Identical Soul Splinter effects do not stack. If more than one version of the same Splinter is equipped, the stronger effect takes priority.
Matching duplicates are therefore normally more useful as Amalgamation material.
Farming Without Using the Reserve Mapping
If you specifically need Anguish, repeatedly farming content without looking for Ruby Reserves leaves much more of the process to RNG.
Use the Soul Splinter’s resistance to identify its Gem Reserve first, then build your farming route around that target.
Assuming Hellfire Is a Free 50% Damage Multiplier
The loss of 100% Critical Strike Chance can disable core damage interactions. Hellfire is strongest when the build does not depend on Crit in the first place.
Assuming Black Soulstone Is Always at 200 Stacks
Black Soulstone requires kills and its individual Soul stacks do not refresh. A theoretical maximum-stack calculation can therefore be misleading in bosses or other low-density encounters.
Best Route to Get an Abyssal Soul Splinter
If your goal is one specific Abyssal rather than collecting every Soul Splinter, use this priority:
- Choose the exact Splinter required by your build.
- Check the drawback before committing to the farm.
- Identify its matching Gem Reserve.
- Farm Nightmare Dungeons and Escalations that provide the relevant Reserve opportunity.
- Keep every matching copy regardless of rarity.
- Convert complete groups of five immediately when doing so helps inventory management.
- Count Rare and Legendary direct drops as skipped portions of the 125-Lesser chain.
- Repeat until you have five Greater copies and create the Abyssal version.
This route is significantly more controlled than simply waiting for a random Unique Soul Splinter, especially when only one of the eight families works for your build.
Current Data and PTR Differences
Blizzard’s live Season of Hell’s Legacy documentation confirms the eight Soul Splinter families, the three-Splinter equipment limit, the four live rarities, and Horadric Cube Amalgamation.
Final Patch 3.2.1 item data differs substantially from the original 3.2.0 PTR values. For that reason, this guide does not reuse the Soul Splinter numbers from our older Season 15 PTR overview.
