Updated October 9, 2026: This guide reflects the current Red Horizon version of The Division 2. It includes the live Escalation token rules, Targeted Loot changes, Escalation Requisition Vendor, current Prototype Core and Augment costs, Skill Tier Prototype changes, and the new Blackout Dark Zone Prototype source. Ubisoft has also announced a larger Prototype Gear, Expertise, Augment, and Escalation rework for Season 4, but those future changes are not treated as live mechanics here.

Escalation is the main PvE farm for Prototype Gear in The Division 2, but Prototype progression is not simply “run Tier 10 until everything is orange.” The efficient route depends on what you already own. Farm Escalation when you need Prototype drops or Prototype Cores, use the Requisition Vendor when its daily cache matches your target, and convert an existing item only when it is a Level 40 piece you genuinely want to keep and you have already brought it to Expertise Level 30.

If you returned recently and are still deciding whether your build, SHD, Expertise, or gear is the actual problem, start with our The Division 2 Returning Player Guide. Prototype investment makes much more sense once you have one stable endgame build.

Your Goal Best Current Route What To Avoid
Get any Prototype Gear Farm Escalation at the highest tier your group can clear quickly and consistently Forcing Tier 10 if every run becomes slow or unreliable
Farm a specific gear or weapon category Watch Escalation Targeted Loot and the daily Requisition Vendor caches Grinding the wrong rotation just because it is available today
Turn an exact item you already own into Prototype Reach Expertise 30 on that item, then convert it with a Prototype Core Converting an item whose talent or attributes you still want to change
Get Prototype Cores Deconstruct unwanted Prototype drops and use other current Core sources Rerolling Augments repeatedly before the rest of your build is ready
Push higher Escalation tiers Improve the underlying build first, then climb tiers Assuming Prototype rarity can fix a bad build by itself

The most important distinction is Prototype drop versus Prototype conversion. You do not need Expertise 30 to enter Escalation or receive Prototype drops. Expertise 30 is required when you want to convert an eligible item you already own into Prototype quality.

What Is Escalation In The Division 2?

Escalation is a permanent Level 40 endgame difficulty introduced in Year 8. Instead of being one separate mission, it applies an escalating difficulty structure to a rotating pool of existing missions and strongholds. The available set refreshes weekly on Tuesday.

Escalation adds stronger enemy scaling, special Mutators, a token economy, Prototype rewards, and a much higher failure cost than normal Heroic or Legendary farming. The goal is not merely to survive harder enemies. You are choosing how much risk to take in exchange for better endgame rewards.

Escalation Tier 0 To Tier 10

Tier 0 is the free entry point. Tier 1 through Tier 10 require Escalation Tokens, with the token cost increasing as you move higher. Higher tiers also improve the reward profile and the chance of stronger Prototype drops.

Every run is a single attempt. Escalation has no checkpoints. A normal failed run still costs the Tokens committed to that attempt. Ubisoft announced for Season 3 that disconnects would no longer take the Tokens committed to the run, addressing a separate failure case from an ordinary wipe or timer expiration.

This is one reason “always farm Tier 10” is poor advice. The highest tier has the highest ceiling, but your real farming efficiency depends on clear time, failure rate, group quality, the current mission, the active Mutators, and whether the Targeted Loot is worth chasing.

Weekly Missions And Daily Targeted Loot

Escalation uses two different rotations that are easy to confuse:

  • Mission rotation: the available Escalation missions refresh weekly.
  • Targeted Loot: the loot target changes daily and can provide Prototype versions of items tied to that rotating pool.

Ubisoft specifically added Prototype items to Escalation’s daily Targeted Loot system in Y8S1.1. This applies to Escalation’s rotating loot pool; it does not make selectable Targeted Loot in activities such as Countdown or Summit a generic Prototype farm.

Before spending Tokens, check the current mission and Targeted Loot. If you want a particular Gear Set, Brand, weapon type, or slot, waiting for a useful rotation is often more efficient than repeatedly accepting random Prototype drops.

How Escalation Tokens Work Now

Escalation Tokens are the activity currency used to enter paid tiers and buy Prototype caches from the Escalation Requisition Vendor.

Several launch-era guides are now wrong about Tokens. Escalation Tokens no longer reset at the end of a season. Ubisoft removed the seasonal reset in Y8S1.3, so Tokens you save remain available in later seasons.

Unlocked Escalation tiers and Escalation Tokens are also shared account-wide. This makes it much more reasonable to build a reserve instead of feeling pressured to spend everything before a season ends.

Do You Lose Escalation Tokens If You Fail?

Yes, a normal failed Escalation attempt can still consume the Tokens committed to the run. That risk is part of the activity. Ubisoft’s Season 3 plan specifically addressed disconnects so they would not take the wagered Tokens.

For farming, this means consistency matters. A slightly lower tier that you clear repeatedly can be better than a higher tier where wipes repeatedly erase both time and Tokens.

Escalation Requisition Vendor

The Escalation Requisition Vendor is located in the Base of Operations next to the Escalation panel. It gives your Tokens a second purpose: you can exchange them directly for Prototype caches instead of relying entirely on enemy drops.

Cache Current Cost What It Does
Prototype Random Cache 5 Escalation Tokens Always available; awards one random Prototype item
Prototype Gear Cache 10 Escalation Tokens Daily rotation by equipment type with a better chance of stronger rolls
Prototype Weapon Cache 10 Escalation Tokens Daily rotation by weapon type with a better chance of stronger rolls

There is no purchase limit on these caches. In practice, the daily Gear and Weapon caches are the interesting ones when their category matches your build. The Random Cache is flexible, but it adds another RNG layer because the item type itself is not focused.

What Is Prototype Gear?

Prototype is an item quality above normal High-End, Named, and Gear Set gear. It does not automatically replace every existing item in your stash. Ubisoft’s stated design is that normal builds should still function, while Prototype lets established builds push beyond the previous stat ceiling.

The old maximum value of a normal attribute becomes the bottom of the Prototype range, while a Prototype attribute can reach up to roughly 1.5 times the previous maximum. Prototype items also gain an Augment, an additional effect that can be leveled and rerolled.

This is why Prototype Gear is best treated as a late-build investment system rather than a substitute for buildcraft. A badly assembled Prototype loadout is still a badly assembled loadout.

How To Get Prototype Gear

There are now several current routes, and this is another area where launch guides are already stale.

Source Best For Main Limitation
Escalation enemy and chest drops Primary PvE Prototype farming and Targeted Loot Tier difficulty, Token risk, RNG
Escalation Requisition Vendor Focusing a daily gear slot or weapon category Requires Escalation Tokens and still has roll RNG
Convert an eligible item Keeping an exact Named, High-End, or Gear Set item you already own Requires Expertise 30 and locks normal recalibration/optimization
Blackout Dark Zone Players who want Prototype drops while Blackout is active in the non-normalized PvPvE DZ rotation Contaminated loot, PvP risk, less controllable than Escalation Targeted Loot
DZ South Vendor Buying a Prototype Cache or Prototype Core with DZ Currency Requires Dark Zone Currency

Prototype Drops In Blackout Dark Zone

Red Horizon added another current Prototype source. When the Blackout Dark Zone is active in the Dark Zone rotation, Prototype Gear and Prototype Weapons can drop there as contaminated loot from enemies.

Enemy Prototype Chance Roll Quality
Normal 0.2% Mid stat rolls
Elite 0.5% mid + 0.2% high Mid or high stat rolls
Boss 1% mid + 2% high Mid or high stat rolls

Blackout is useful if you already enjoy Dark Zone farming, but it does not replace Escalation as the cleaner PvE route. Escalation gives you Targeted Loot, a dedicated Token economy, the Requisition Vendor, and a progression structure built specifically around Prototype farming.

Prototype Caches At The DZ South Vendor

The Dark Zone vendor overhaul also added two relevant options at DZ South:

  • Prototype Core Cache: 125 DZ Currency for one Prototype Core.
  • Prototype Cache: 260 DZ Currency for one random Prototype weapon or gear piece, with a higher chance of better or perfect stats.

This gives DZ players another way to convert time into Prototype progression without living exclusively inside Escalation.

How To Convert Existing Gear Into Prototype

Conversion is the controlled route when you already own the exact item you want. It is especially attractive for a good Named item or weapon that would be painful to replace with a random Prototype drop.

An eligible conversion requires:

  • Level 40 item.
  • Maximum Expertise, currently Expertise Level 30.
  • An eligible High-End, Named, or Gear Set item.
  • 1 Prototype Core for the Prototype conversion itself.

Exotics cannot currently be converted into Prototype quality.

You Do Not Need To Fully Optimize The Item First

This is another point where early Prototype advice can mislead returning players. The live system does not require the item to be fully optimized before conversion. The Prototype version scales as though the base item had been fully optimized.

That does not mean you should convert any random copy. Once an item becomes Prototype, it can no longer use the normal Optimization or Recalibration systems. The item’s talent, attribute structure, and role in the build should already be something you are willing to keep.

What Happens To The Rolls?

When an eligible item is converted, at least one attribute is guaranteed to roll at the new Prototype maximum. Other attributes remain at their previous maximum baseline with a chance to also reach the new maximum.

The important consequence is that conversion does not guarantee a perfect multi-max Prototype item. Min-maxing can still involve multiple copies and RNG, which is one reason Prototype Cores and Expertise resources are easy to waste.

Expertise 30 And Prototype Gear

You do not need Expertise 30 to farm Escalation or receive Prototype drops. You need maximum Expertise when converting a normal item that you already own into Prototype.

That distinction changes the efficient progression route:

  • If your Expertise is low, you can still farm Escalation and equip good Prototype drops.
  • If you already own a perfect Named item or weapon that you refuse to replace, Expertise 30 opens the controlled conversion route.
  • If you are still changing builds every few days, expensive Expertise investment into every piece is usually premature.

The Expertise grind is therefore not a mandatory entry ticket for Escalation. It is a tool for protecting specific items that are already part of your long-term build plan.

Prototype Cores Explained

Prototype Cores are the system’s key long-term currency. The main repeatable source is dismantling unwanted Prototype Gear. Ubisoft also provides Prototype Core Caches through Raids and the Incursion, and the current DZ South vendor can sell a Core Cache for Dark Zone Currency.

Prototype Cores are account-wide, so they are not trapped on the character that earned them.

What Prototype Cores Are Used For

  • Converting an eligible Expertise 30 item into Prototype.
  • Upgrading an item’s Augment.
  • Rerolling the Augment into another effect.

The conversion itself costs only one Core, but Augment investment is where the currency sink becomes much larger.

Current Augment Costs

Into The Dark adjusted the cost curve. Fully leveling one Augment still costs 31 Prototype Cores in total. Rerolling is cheaper than it was at launch: the reroll cost now caps at 6 Prototype Cores from the third reroll onward.

This is why chasing a perfect Augment on every early Prototype drop is usually inefficient. A usable piece with an imperfect Augment can be more valuable than emptying your Core reserve into a slot you may replace tomorrow.

Prototype Augments

Every Prototype item has an Augment. Augments are not tied to one specific slot, so the same effect can appear across different Prototype pieces.

Augment Effect Natural Use
Quantum Chance to become temporarily immune to damage General survivability
Echo Bullets can deal their damage a second time Weapon DPS
Atomize Improves grenade radius and damage Explosive and grenade setups
Amalgam Bullet hits can apply a random status effect Status and weapon hybrids
Trapper Increases the duration of status effects you apply Status builds
Entropy Increases Health based on total Armor Defensive setups
Anomaly Skills restore a portion of the damage they deal as healing Skill-damage sustain
Paradox Chance to refill part of the magazine while firing Sustained weapon fire
Synesthesia Bullet hits can reduce skill cooldowns Weapon/skill hybrids

Quantum, Amalgam, Anomaly, and Synesthesia were specifically buffed after launch in Y8S1.3, so older March and early-April Augment rankings can be misleading even when the names are correct.

Prototype Skill Tier Gear Changed After Launch

One of the most important stale-guide traps concerns Skill Tier cores. At launch, Ubisoft said Skill Tier cores would remain unchanged. Y8S1.1 changed that.

Prototype items with a Skill Tier core now contribute 1.5 Skill Tier per item, with the final total displayed in whole tiers. Ubisoft’s examples are:

  • 1 Prototype Skill Tier item = +1 Skill Tier.
  • 2 Prototype Skill Tier items = +3 Skill Tiers.
  • 3 Prototype Skill Tier items = +4 Skill Tiers.
  • 4 Prototype Skill Tier items = +6 Skill Tiers.

If a guide still tells skill-build players that Prototype Skill Tier provides no additional value, that advice predates the April 2026 update.

What Escalation Tier Should You Farm?

There is no universal best tier for every player. Ubisoft confirms that Prototype Targeted Loot chances increase as Escalation tiers rise, but the fastest farm is the tier with the best reward per successful minute for your actual group.

Community farmers repeatedly make the same point: Tier 10 is not automatically the most efficient choice if it turns a fast farm into a 30-minute run with a meaningful wipe chance. Some experienced groups prefer high tiers for better roll quality, while other players report better per-hour results by repeating a lower tier they can clear almost mechanically.

A practical rule is:

  1. Start on a tier you can clear comfortably.
  2. Move up until clear time or wipe rate jumps sharply.
  3. Farm the tier immediately below that point unless the higher tier’s Targeted Loot or reward quality is worth the extra time.
  4. Re-evaluate when the weekly mission rotation, daily Targeted Loot, group, or seasonal modifiers change.

This is more reliable than copying somebody else’s “Tier 7” or “Tier 10” recommendation without matching their build and squad.

Are The Escalation Prototype Drop Rates Known?

Ubisoft officially confirms that Prototype drop rates were increased in Y8S1.1 and that the chance for Prototype Targeted Loot increases with higher Escalation tiers. The current official notes do not publish a complete permanent percentage table for every live tier.

Community-maintained tables are useful for comparison, but they should not be treated as an immutable official drop-rate contract. This matters because Escalation has already received multiple reward changes and Ubisoft has announced another substantial system rework for Season 4.

For planning, the reliable takeaway is simpler: higher tier improves the opportunity, Targeted Loot improves the relevance of the drop, and fast successful clears determine your real items-per-hour.

Current Escalation Mutators And How To React

Escalation’s Mutator pool changed again in Y8S2.2. Hot Foot and Suppressor are no longer part of the current set: Ubisoft replaced them with ISAC Says and One-For-All. This is another place where older Escalation guides can send returning players in with the wrong expectations.

Mutator What It Does Practical Response
Harvester Regenerates Armor and Health while dealing damage Disable it by damaging the enemy with a grenade or applying a Status Effect
Aid Specialist Repairs nearby allies when they become heavily damaged Prioritize the support enemy before trying to burn through the pack
Unyielding Cleanses Status Effects once at a set Armor or Health threshold Expect the cleanse and avoid committing your entire control chain before it triggers
Variety Pack Repeated kills with the same weapon reduce that weapon’s damage until you switch Build around weapon swapping instead of trying to brute-force the penalty
ISAC Says Applies one of three debuffs: Red reduces Weapon Damage by 25%, Blue reduces Weapon Handling by 30%, and Yellow increases Skill Cooldowns by 30% Clear the displayed condition quickly: destroy a weakpoint for Red, get three kills or assists for Blue, or kill an enemy with a sidearm for Yellow. Successfully clearing the debuff grants 30% Rate of Fire
One-For-All A marked enemy grants 50% damage resistance to allies within 20 meters; damage dealt to the marked target is propagated to those nearby allies Focus the marked target and use the propagation effect instead of wasting damage trying to brute-force the protected pack

Mutators can make the same tier feel very different from one rotation to another. A build that looks perfect on a spreadsheet can still become inefficient if it has no answer to the active mechanic. Treat any guide that still lists Hot Foot or Suppressor as current as pre-Y8S2.2 information.

Best Prototype Farming Strategy In 2026

The current efficient route is less about one magic mission and more about avoiding unnecessary RNG layers.

1. Decide Whether You Need A Drop Or A Conversion

If you already own the exact Named item or weapon you want and it is part of a permanent build, the Expertise 30 conversion route gives you more control. If you are still experimenting with slots, direct Prototype farming is usually cheaper because the game can simply hand you a stronger replacement.

2. Check Targeted Loot Before Spending Tokens

Escalation Targeted Loot is one of the strongest focusing tools in the system. Farm aggressively when the rotation matches a set, Brand, weapon class, or slot you genuinely need.

3. Use The Vendor As A Second Roll Engine

Do not treat Escalation Tokens only as entry tickets. If the daily Requisition Vendor cache matches your target, the same farming session can produce enemy drops and additional focused cache rolls.

4. Farm The Highest Efficient Tier, Not The Highest Visible Tier

Your goal is successful Prototype rolls per hour, not the biggest number next to “Tier.” If Tier 10 is comfortable for your group, use it. If a lower tier cuts the clear time in half and removes most wipes, compare the actual output before assuming you are losing efficiency.

5. Deconstruct Bad Prototype Drops

A useless Prototype is not completely useless. Deconstructing unwanted pieces feeds the Prototype Core economy that powers conversions and Augments.

6. Spend Cores On Permanent Pieces First

Prototype Cores become expensive once you start leveling and rerolling Augments across an entire build. Prioritize pieces you expect to keep through balance changes: a difficult-to-replace Named item, a favorite weapon, or a proven build slot.

7. Be Careful Chasing Perfect Augments Before Season 4

Ubisoft has already announced that Season 4 will rework Prototype Gear to reduce RNG and give players more control. Expertise and Augments are part of that work, and Escalation itself is also getting more control over challenge and rewards.

The current system is live and worth using, but spending hundreds of Cores to perfect a marginal slot immediately before a announced progression rework is a different decision from building a functional Prototype setup.

What Should You Convert To Prototype First?

There is no universal first item, but there is a sensible priority.

Priority Good Conversion Candidate Why
High Favorite weapon you already use constantly The investment improves an item that stays equipped across many activities
High Hard-to-replace Named item with the correct talent and attributes Conversion protects a specific roll instead of waiting for a matching random Prototype
Medium Core piece of a stable Gear Set build Good when the build is already proven, but common set pieces may be easier to farm directly
Low Temporary filler piece You may replace it before the Prototype investment pays off
Avoid Item with the wrong talent or attributes Prototype conversion removes normal recalibration and optimization options

A useful community strategy is to farm common Gear Set pieces directly when their Targeted Loot is active, while reserving controlled conversion for specific Named items and weapons that would be painful to reproduce through Prototype RNG. Treat that as a farming strategy rather than an official rule.

Where Prototype Gear Is Normalized

Prototype Gear does not deliver its full power in every activity.

  • Raids and Incursions: Prototype stats are normalized toward the lower end of the Prototype range and Augments are disabled.
  • Toxic Dark Zone: Prototype remains normalized in a similar way.
  • Blackout Dark Zone: Prototype base stats can use their full values; Augments use PvP-balanced values.
  • Escalation and normal PvE: this is where the full PvE Prototype progression is most directly relevant.

This matters when deciding whether the grind is worth it. If your only goal is clearing a Raid or Incursion, a strong normal build remains valuable because Prototype’s largest advantages are intentionally reduced there.

Common Escalation And Prototype Gear Mistakes

Thinking Expertise 30 Is Required To Enter Escalation

It is not. Level 40 players can use Escalation. Expertise 30 is needed to convert an eligible existing item into Prototype quality.

Following Launch Advice About Skill Tier Prototype Gear

Prototype Skill Tier pieces were changed in Y8S1.1. They now provide 1.5 Skill Tier per item instead of behaving like ordinary +1 Skill Tier pieces.

Believing Escalation Tokens Reset Every Season

They no longer do. Y8S1.3 removed the seasonal Token reset.

Spending Tokens Without Checking Targeted Loot

The right daily Targeted Loot can be more important to your build than blindly choosing the highest tier.

Converting An Item Before Its Build Identity Is Final

Once converted, normal Optimization and Recalibration are no longer available. Decide the talent and attribute structure first.

Rerolling Every Bad Augment

Rerolls consume Prototype Cores and the cost eventually caps at six Cores per attempt. Early in progression, those Cores usually have more value spread across the build.

Assuming Tier 10 Is Always The Best Farm

Tier 10 offers the highest challenge and stronger reward opportunity, but a slower or failure-prone run can lose to a lower tier on actual rewards per hour.

Thinking Escalation Is Still The Only Prototype Source

It is still the main focused PvE source, but Red Horizon added Prototype contaminated drops when Blackout Dark Zone is active, and DZ South sells Prototype progression caches.

What Changes In Season 4?

Ubisoft has already announced that Prototype Gear and Escalation will receive another major pass in Season 4.

The announced direction includes:

  • More player control over Prototype Gear progression and customization.
  • Less reliance on RNG.
  • Changes involving Expertise and Augments.
  • New ways to fine-tune Prototype Gear.
  • More control over Escalation challenge and rewards.
  • More consistent and predictable Mutators.

These are announced future goals, not live mechanics. Until Ubisoft publishes the final Season 4 rules, do not build current farming advice around guessed costs or systems.

Escalation And Prototype Gear FAQ

How Do You Unlock Escalation In The Division 2?

Reach Level 40 and access the Escalation system from the Base of Operations. Tier 0 provides the free entry route, while higher tiers use Escalation Tokens.

Can You Play Escalation Solo?

Yes. Escalation supports solo play, groups, and public matchmaking. Matchmaking is based on the selected Tier rather than one specific mission.

Do You Need Expertise 30 For Escalation?

No. You can enter Escalation and receive Prototype drops without Expertise 30. Maximum Expertise is required only when converting an eligible item you already own into Prototype.

What Is The Maximum Expertise Level For Prototype Conversion?

The current maximum is Expertise Level 30. An eligible Level 40 item must reach maximum Expertise before it can be converted.

Do Escalation Tokens Reset Every Season?

No. Ubisoft removed the seasonal reset in Y8S1.3, so your Escalation Tokens remain available across seasons.

Can You Lose Escalation Tokens?

A normal failed Escalation run can still consume the Tokens committed to that attempt. Ubisoft announced Season 3 disconnect protection so a connection loss should not be treated like a normal failed run.

Can Exotics Be Upgraded To Prototype?

No. Exotics are currently excluded from Prototype conversion.

Can You Recalibrate Prototype Gear?

No. Once an item becomes Prototype, the normal Recalibration and Optimization systems are no longer available for that item under the current live rules.

How Many Prototype Cores Does It Take To Max An Augment?

The current total cost to fully level one Augment is 31 Prototype Cores.

How Much Does An Augment Reroll Cost?

The reroll cost increases early and currently caps at 6 Prototype Cores starting from the third reroll.

What Is The Best Escalation Tier To Farm?

The best tier is the highest one your build or group can clear quickly and reliably. Higher tiers improve Prototype opportunities, but wipes and long clears can make a lower tier more efficient per hour.

Can Prototype Gear Drop Outside Escalation?

Yes. When Blackout Dark Zone is active in the current rotation, Prototype Gear and Weapons can drop there as contaminated loot from enemies. DZ South also sells Prototype Core and Prototype item caches for Dark Zone Currency.

Does Prototype Gear Work At Full Power In Raids And Incursions?

No. Prototype stats are normalized there and Augments are disabled, so normal endgame builds remain relevant for those activities.

Is Prototype Gear Required For Endgame?

No. Ubisoft explicitly positioned Prototype as a way to push established builds farther, not as a requirement that invalidates every normal High-End or Gear Set build.

Prototype Progression Checklist

  • Reach Level 40 and build a coherent endgame loadout.
  • Check the weekly Escalation missions and daily Targeted Loot before spending Tokens.
  • Farm the highest tier you can clear consistently rather than forcing Tier 10.
  • Use the Escalation Requisition Vendor when its daily cache matches your target.
  • Deconstruct unwanted Prototype drops for Prototype Cores.
  • Raise a specific item to Expertise 30 only when you know you want to keep it.
  • Convert eligible High-End, Named, or Gear Set items with one Prototype Core.
  • Remember that Exotics cannot currently be converted.
  • Do not spend heavily on Augment rerolls before the rest of the build is stable.
  • Account for normalization before grinding Prototype solely for Raids or Incursions.
  • Watch Season 4 patch notes before making extremely expensive long-term Prototype investments.
