Gnasher, Prototype Lancer, and Longshot are the strongest overall weapons in our Gears of War: E-Day launch tier list. Gnasher still defines close-range Versus fights, Prototype Lancer is the easiest high-value rifle to carry into almost any encounter, and Longshot gives accurate players the cleanest long-range win condition.
This is a launch-day ranking for October 6, 2026, not a recycled beta list. The Coalition’s October 5 patch notes contain stability and mode fixes but no listed weapon-balance changes, so the early-access weapon behavior still applies at global launch. The ranking below gives Versus the most weight, then adjusts for Horde Siege and Campaign value.
Gears of War: E-Day Weapon Tier List at a Glance
Gears of War: E-Day Weapon Tier List
| Tier | Weapons | Why They Rank Here |
|---|---|---|
| S | Gnasher, Prototype Lancer, Longshot | The strongest mix of kill pressure, reliability, and usefulness in the situations that decide most fights. |
| A | Lancer Mk1, Hammerburst, Breechshot, Snub, Torque Bow | Excellent weapons with either a narrower range profile, a higher skill requirement, or more dependence on the map and matchup. |
| B | Incinerator, Gut-Puncher, Ripper, Striga | Good tools in the right hands, especially in Horde Siege, but less consistent as default picks across every mode. |
There is no C or D tier here. E-Day’s arsenal is compact and role-driven, and several B-tier weapons can outperform S-tier choices when the encounter is built around their specialty. A Gut-Puncher clearing clustered Locust in Horde Siege is doing a different job from a Gnasher winning a Versus duel.

How We Ranked the Best E-Day Weapons
We are not ranking guns by a single hidden damage number. E-Day rewards range discipline, cover control, Active Reload timing, and the ability to recover when a fight stops going according to plan. The Coalition also rebuilt several weapons around new reload behavior, simulated projectile travel, scope sway, and more deliberate movement.
Our overall tier is based on four practical questions: how reliably the weapon wins inside its intended range, how punishing its weaknesses are, how often that range appears in current Versus play, and whether the gun keeps useful value in Horde Siege or Campaign. That is why a versatile rifle can outrank a devastating specialist even when the specialist has the higher ceiling.
The official E-Day gameplay update confirms several details that matter to the ranking: Gnasher has a six-shell capacity with round-by-round Active Reload, Prototype Lancer gets a higher rate of fire and deeper magazine, Hammerburst fires accurate six-round bursts, Breechshot can one-shot with a PvP headshot, and Lancer Mk1 hits hard but carries heavy recoil.
S-Tier E-Day Weapons
Gnasher
Gnasher is still the weapon every Versus player has to respect. E-Day may be heavier and more readable than the hyper-bounce eras of older Gears, but close-range fights still happen constantly, and the shotgun remains the fastest way to turn a positioning win into an elimination.
The biggest change is reload management. Gnasher now holds six shells instead of eight and uses a round-by-round Active Reload system. You can load only what you need and get back into the fight instead of committing to a full reload, which gives experienced players another layer of timing to exploit.
Its weakness is obvious: outside its effective range, Gnasher becomes a liability. That does not stop it from being S tier because E-Day gives aggressive players plenty of opportunities to close distance through cover, slides, flanks, and smoke-assisted pushes.
Prototype Lancer
Prototype Lancer is the best all-round weapon in the current sandbox. The Coalition describes it as a high-rate-of-fire rifle with a deeper magazine than recent Lancers, and that identity carries across Campaign, Horde Siege, and multiplayer.
It does not delete a close-range opponent as quickly as Gnasher or dominate a sightline like Longshot, but it rarely feels useless. It can pressure players crossing open space, help focus down a target with teammates, finish wounded enemies, and keep firing long enough that one missed burst does not immediately lose the engagement.
For a new player, this is the safest weapon to learn first. It lets you focus on cover, angles, target tracking, and Active Reload without making every mistake fatal.
Longshot
Longshot remains the cleanest long-range power weapon in E-Day. A good sniper can decide a fight before the opposing team reaches Gnasher range, punish predictable cover peeks, and remove priority enemies in Campaign or Horde before they become a problem.
The tradeoff is commitment. First-person scopes have sway in E-Day, and projectile behavior now matters more than in older entries. You also give up a lot of comfort when someone gets on top of you. Longshot is S tier because the payoff is enormous, not because it is the easiest weapon on the list.
A-Tier E-Day Weapons
Lancer Mk1
Lancer Mk1, often called the Retro Lancer, is the aggressive rifle alternative. It hits hard at close range and can still work farther out if you control its recoil. In practice, that makes it excellent for players who want rifle pressure without giving up the ability to punish a rush.
It sits below Prototype Lancer because the recoil tax matters. The Prototype is easier to recommend to almost anyone; the Mk1 asks you to learn its rhythm before the extra punch becomes a real advantage.
Hammerburst
Hammerburst is one of the best mid-range guns in the game when the fight stays organized. Its six-round burst is accurate, and a Perfect Active Reload increases the rate of fire, so clean timing turns it into a very efficient lane-control weapon.
The problem starts when the fight becomes messy. A Gnasher player collapsing the distance forces Hammerburst into a range where its controlled burst pattern is much less comfortable. That keeps it in A tier instead of S.
Breechshot
Breechshot is the more flexible precision option. The Coalition confirms that it can score a one-shot headshot in PvP, while the weapon also gets the same round-by-round reload concept used by the Gnasher. That means you can load a round, take another angle, and keep the pressure up without waiting through a full reload.
It does not replace Longshot as the pure sniper choice, but it is easier to fit into mid-range engagements and has brutal axe executions when the fight gets personal.
Snub
Snub earns A tier because it is exactly what a sidearm should be: fast, accurate, and available when the primary weapon is empty or wrong for the moment. It is not competing with Gnasher or Prototype Lancer for the same slot in your mental loadout. Its value is that it rescues bad situations without demanding a complicated setup.
Some launch tier lists rate Snub much higher or much lower depending on whether sidearms are judged against primaries. We rate it by practical value inside its role, which makes A tier the better fit.
Torque Bow
Torque Bow is a high-skill weapon with a frightening ceiling. A player who understands charge timing, movement reads, and cover angles can create kills that other weapons simply cannot reproduce.
That ceiling comes with a cost: missed shots are expensive, rushed shots are unreliable, and close pressure can deny the time you need to set up. It is excellent, but not forgiving enough to be a universal S-tier recommendation.
B-Tier E-Day Weapons
Incinerator
Incinerator is an Imulsion-powered shotgun built around charged close-range pressure. When you get the timing and distance right, it can end an engagement brutally fast. It also becomes more valuable in PvE where enemies are more predictable and area denial matters.
Its charge requirement is the reason it drops into B tier overall. Gnasher is easier to trust in a sudden duel, while Incinerator asks for more setup. In Horde Siege, however, we would move it up a tier.
Gut-Puncher
Gut-Puncher is one of E-Day’s most interesting new weapons. It fires armor-piercing explosive rounds and lets you control the detonation timing, which makes it excellent for punishing enemies behind cover or damaging a group that is stacked around the same objective.
This is another gun that suffers from an overall ranking. In Horde Siege, where enemies cluster and cover-breaking utility matters, Gut-Puncher can be one of the best tools on the map. In a sudden Versus duel, it is much less forgiving than a shotgun or rifle.
Ripper
Ripper rewards commitment to sustained fire. Its handling becomes more useful when you can keep shooting into a target or a group instead of treating it like a burst rifle. That gives it real PvE value, especially against waves and larger enemies.
The downside is downtime. Long firing windows are powerful until the magazine empties at the wrong moment, and the weapon is less comfortable in the stop-start rhythm of cover fights. It is good, but more situational than the rifles above it.
Striga
Striga is the strangest sidearm in the list because it asks you to charge a shot before getting its best result. That is almost the opposite of what most players want from a backup weapon. A sidearm usually comes out because there is no time to reload the primary.
There is still damage potential here, especially if you draw it before the fight becomes an emergency. As a default secondary choice, though, Snub is easier to trust.
Best E-Day Weapons by Mode
| Mode | Best Picks | What Matters Most |
|---|---|---|
| Versus | Gnasher, Prototype Lancer, Longshot | Close-range kill pressure, team-fire consistency, and the ability to punish sightlines. |
| Horde Siege | Prototype Lancer, Gut-Puncher, Incinerator, Ripper | Sustained damage, crowd control, wave clear, and value against grouped enemies. |
| Campaign | Prototype Lancer, Longshot, Gnasher | Flexibility across changing encounter ranges and fast answers to priority targets. |
| Beginner Loadout | Prototype Lancer + Snub | Forgiving handling and enough range coverage to learn movement and cover before specializing. |
Horde Siege deserves its own adjustment because the mode is built around multiple four-player squads, shared objectives, large battle spaces, and world-boss pressure. The official multiplayer deep dive describes it as a 12-player PvE mode, so weapons that can control groups or maintain damage across a long fight gain value there.
Best Weapon for New Players
Start with Prototype Lancer, then learn Gnasher. Prototype Lancer teaches the fundamentals without forcing you into one range. You can contribute from cover, track moving targets, help teammates finish enemies, and still survive when the engagement moves closer.
But do not postpone the Gnasher for too long if you want to play Versus. You will eventually need to understand shotgun range, timing, cover exits, and what a committed close-range push looks like. Even when another weapon is your favorite, Gnasher knowledge is part of reading the match.
Why Active Reload Changes the Tier List
Active Reload is not just a damage bonus or a nostalgia mechanic in E-Day. Several weapons now have different reload identities. Gnasher and Breechshot load round by round, which means the player can choose between getting one shot back immediately or waiting for a better reload window. Hammerburst rewards a Perfect Active Reload with faster firing.
That makes consistency more important than theoretical peak damage. A weapon that lets you recover cleanly from a partial reload or keep pressure on a lane can outperform a stronger gun that leaves you helpless after one mistake.
Launch Meta: What Could Change Next?
This list is intentionally labeled as a launch ranking. E-Day has only just moved from early access into global release, and there is not enough public match data yet to pretend the meta is solved. The community already disagrees sharply on several weapons, especially the Lancers and Snub.
The first meaningful balance pass could move several guns quickly. A small rifle damage change would affect how safely Gnasher users can push. A reload or ammo adjustment could change Incinerator, Ripper, or precision-weapon value without touching raw damage at all. We will treat official patch notes as the trigger for future ranking changes rather than rewriting the tier list around isolated clips.
