Medic is our best overall Gears of War: E-Day Horde Siege class at launch. Stim Vaporizer can heal and revive nearby Gears, even members of other squads, so one well-positioned Medic can prevent an objective from collapsing. For damage-focused players, Marksman has the higher precision ceiling; Breacher excels in close quarters; and Assault is the simplest class for learning cover, timing and objective defense.
Horde Siege is the 12-player PvE mode with three squads of four operating on the same Kalona battlefield. Each squad has its own mission, which can cross paths with the others. These rankings apply to Horde Siege, not to Versus PvP or Campaign. All four classes can complete content. This is an editorial October 8, 2026 launch ranking, not an official win-rate leaderboard.
Gears of War: E-Day Horde Siege Class Tier List
| Tier | Class | Why Pick It? | When It Struggles |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Medic | Most reliable squad recovery; Stim Vaporizer heals and revives, including across squads | Teammates spread beyond effective support range, or the Medic goes down first |
| A | Marksman | High critical-hit damage, tagged targets and long-range threat removal | Missed shots, lost firing angles and early ammo constraints |
| A | Breacher | Strong short-range pressure, self-recovery and damage mitigation | Long exposed approaches, ranged threats and overextended pushes |
| B | Assault | Accessible cover-fire role; Sonic Disruptor can stop a dangerous rush | Less specialist impact in some optimized squads; poor cover wastes the damage bonus |
How to read the tiers: S means the class brings unusually reliable value to mixed teams; A means strong with the right player or mission; B means useful but usually less decisive in a high-level composition. B does not mean a bad class. We would promote Assault to A for brand-new players or teams spending most of a run defending a fixed position. We would promote a skilled Marksman into an effective S-tier damage role when their squad keeps the firing lane open.
Our order weights recovering failed fights, defending objectives, dealing with priority enemies and contributing without ideal teamwork. The Coalition explicitly allows duplicate classes and says there is no mandatory four-class formation. A change in mission, difficulty or loadout can change the answer.
All Four Classes, Tactical Gear and Bonuses
| Class | Tactical Gear | Built-In Bonus | Primary Job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medic | Stim Vaporizer: heals and revives Gears in range | Faster health regeneration | Keep the objective team alive through sustained pressure |
| Marksman | Pulse Drone: marks Locust targets for your squad | Higher critical-hit damage | Identify and eliminate high-priority enemies |
| Breacher | Adrenaline Injector: restores health and reduces incoming damage | Resistance to status effects and melee damage | Take dangerous space at close range |
| Assault | Sonic Disruptor: stuns incoming enemies | Bonus damage while fighting from cover | Control approaches and provide steady mid-range fire |
These Tactical Gear functions and class bonuses come from The Coalition’s official multiplayer breakdown. The tier letters are our interpretation of those tools alongside early community reports, rather than official damage calculations.
Best Gears of War: E-Day Classes Explained
S Tier: Medic – The Best Overall Pick for Mixed Squads
Medic earns first place because bad Horde Siege runs rarely end from a lack of theoretical damage alone. A teammate gets caught during a Repair objective, another tries to reach their tags, then the surviving players lose the R.I.G. A timely Stim Vaporizer can interrupt that chain. It heals and revives in range, and the cross-squad revive makes it valuable during large encounters when two teams overlap.
How to play Medic: stay one safe cover position behind the most contested space, not at the far end of the map. Watch where the group actually fights. You should still shoot, help with objectives and move with the team; hiding so far back that your Stim never reaches anyone defeats the purpose. Try to use Stim while several teammates are threatened, rather than treating it only as a response after everyone has already fallen.
Failure mode: an aggressive squad pushes into two separate streets. You cannot rescue both groups at once. Say which route you are covering, keep a retreat available and avoid chasing a single downed player into an unwinnable position. Medic has faster personal health regeneration, but that is not permission to ignore crossfire.
Best for: public matchmaking, new teams learning Commander difficulty, prolonged Horde defense and groups that lose Squad Lives to repeated downs. If a team already has a dependable Medic, a second is useful only when survival is the real bottleneck; otherwise bring another damage role.
A Tier: Marksman – Best Precision Damage Potential
Marksman is the class we would not bury at the bottom of a launch tier list. Its bonus increases critical-hit damage, while Pulse Drone identifies Locust enemies for the squad. On the large Horde Siege maps, removing a dangerous ranged enemy before it reaches your teammates can save more resources than simply firing into the largest crowd.
How to play Marksman: choose a lane that has a clear exit, activate Pulse Drone when the targets matter to the objective, and call out the threats your teammates should focus. Move when your target is no longer visible or enemies start reaching your flank. A perfectly aimed shot from an irrelevant rooftop contributes less than a quick kill on the enemy attacking the R.I.G.
Why progression matters: early players report that ammunition can feel restrictive. Community loadout discussions also describe ammo-sustain setups around marked enemies after the relevant upgrades are available. Treat those as possible build directions to check in your current loadout menu, not as a guaranteed bonus every low-level Marksman owns.
Best for: accurate players, coordinated teams, open sightlines and priority-target removal during Invasion Events. Failure mode: a Marksman who stays scoped in while the squad relocates becomes an isolated liability. If your accuracy is inconsistent, practice on easier missions before judging the class by its maximum potential.
A Tier: Breacher – Best Close-Range Push and Personal Sustain
Breacher turns a short, well-planned attack into a strength. Its Adrenaline Injector restores health and reduces damage taken, while its innate resistances help in rough close-range fights. The critical word is short: the Injector does not make every street crossing safe, and it cannot eliminate distant enemies merely by keeping you alive.
How to play Breacher: identify a nearby piece of cover or an enemy group that is blocking your team. Approach with your squad shooting, trigger your recovery when the fight is about to become dangerous, clear the immediate obstruction and get back to cover before committing to a second group. Keep an eye on enemies attacking from above or across the street.
Best for: Secure objectives, tight interiors, close-range weapons and confident players who can recognize when a push is finished. It is particularly rewarding once stronger weapons and mods are unlocked. Failure mode: sprinting toward the nearest target without checking the return path. That forces the Medic to cross dangerous space and turns a successful personal kill into a squad problem.
B Tier Overall, A Tier for Beginners: Assault – Best Fundamentals Class
Assault is built around the habit that keeps new Gears players alive: finding useful cover and fighting from it. The class gains damage while in cover, while Sonic Disruptor can stun incoming enemies, especially during an objective defense. These mechanics are easy to understand and useful before you have a sophisticated collection of mods.
How to play Assault: claim a lane that your squad needs, maintain an escape route and use the Disruptor when enemies threaten to break the line, not after they are already behind everyone. Move with the objective. Staying in your favorite cover after the mission shifts across the map is not helping your team.
Why it is B on this particular list: at higher levels, a strong Marksman or Breacher can contribute a sharper specialist answer while Medic handles the group’s biggest recovery risk. That is a comparative judgment, not a claim that Assault lacks damage or cannot clear Allfather. Its reliable cover play and crowd interruption still make it our first class to recommend to a player learning Horde Siege.
Which Horde Siege Class Should You Choose?
| Your Situation | First Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First time playing Horde Siege | Assault | Cover damage and a stun tool teach positioning without a demanding specialist setup |
| Queueing without a premade team | Medic | Revives and healing are useful even when teammates have not agreed on a strategy |
| Confident with precision weapons | Marksman | Critical damage and Pulse tags punish priority threats at range |
| Prefer aggressive shotgun-range fights | Breacher | Injector sustain supports deliberate short-range pushes |
| Defending one R.I.G. against waves | Medic or Assault | Recovery prevents collapses; cover damage and stun help hold entry points |
| Squad already has reliable healing | Marksman or Breacher | Add ranged target removal or close-range entry rather than duplicating a role you do not need |
Solo queue is not solo play. Here it means joining Horde Siege matchmaking without three friends. The 12-player battle is still built around teams. If you want a low-friction starting point with strangers, Medic and Assault make it easier to contribute even before a full build comes online.
Best Class for Each Horde Siege Objective
Instead of assuming one class dominates the whole map, assign the next job based on the R.I.G. objective. The game launches with five main objective archetypes, and each rewards a different habit.
| Objective | Classes to Prioritize | Practical Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Secure: push enemies out of an area | Breacher + Medic | Clear the immediate entry point, then stabilize before pushing the next position |
| Calibrate: hold changing zones near a R.I.G. | Medic + Assault | Shift together between zones; do not let a damage player wander off to farm distant kills |
| Repair: recover and install scattered components | Medic + Breacher | Protect the carrier’s route; clear only the threats blocking a safe collection path |
| Defend: keep a working R.I.G. intact | Assault + Marksman | Interrupt enemies approaching the R.I.G. and remove ranged threats before they reach the line |
| Horde: survive 10 waves around one R.I.G. | Medic + Assault + Marksman | Keep recovery central, establish sightlines and preserve defensive resources for tougher waves |
These are role suggestions, not forced class requirements. If your team has four experienced Breachers, the game allows it. You still need to solve the jobs listed in the last column.
Blitz vs. Siege vs. Horde: Does the Best Class Change?
| Playlist | Typical Length | Where Class Choice Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Blitz | About 15-20 minutes; 1-2 main objectives | Mobile roles such as Breacher help secure space; Medic covers rushed decisions |
| Siege | About 20-40 minutes; multiple objectives | Balanced squads cope best with a changing route, calibration and defense |
| Horde | Up to 50-60 minutes; 10 waves | Medic recovery and reliable sustained lane control become more important over time |
Longer does not always mean the highest difficulty. Modifiers, mission difficulty, enemy Invasions and the skill of the other squads all matter. The official mode is Horde Siege; Blitz, Siege and Horde are its three playlists, not three separate class systems.
Best Four-Player Horde Siege Team Compositions
| Squad | Best Use | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|
| Medic + Marksman + Breacher + Assault | Best balanced starting squad: one of each ability | Everyone must stay linked to the same mission, rather than playing four separate fights |
| Medic + Medic + Marksman + Breacher | Struggling with repeated downs on harder difficulties | Two Medics cannot replace enough damage if objectives stall |
| Medic + Assault + Assault + Marksman | Defend and Horde playlists; cover-heavy maps | Slow response when an objective suddenly requires a close-range push |
| Medic + Breacher + Breacher + Marksman | Secure and Repair runs with frequent movement | Both Breachers can overextend simultaneously and split support range |
Our default premade recommendation: one of each class until the squad learns the objectives. After that, replace the role your group rarely needs with a duplicate of the one solving your biggest problem. No class is skin-locked: the character appearance you choose does not determine your combat class.
Turn Your Horde Siege Plan Into a Run
Once you know which job your squad needs, choose the matching next step. A mission clear earns XP, but is not a purchase of a fixed Class Level.
Class Builds and Mod Priorities Without Wasting Weapon Parts
Your early build should fix the reason your class fails, not copy a high-level screenshot containing slots you have not unlocked. The launch system has Armor Mods, Tactical Gear Mods and Weapon Mods. Tactical upgrades can affect ability cooldown, range or effects; Armor Mods change survivability and handling; Weapon Mods alter weapon behavior. Exact options depend on your current unlock track.
Medic Build Priorities
Start with being alive and close enough to help. As available, compare Tactical Gear upgrades for more frequent or more useful Stim deployment, then Armor Mods that make your own survival more dependable. For weapons, choose a mid-range setup that lets you assist the defense without leaving your teammates behind to chase kills.
Marksman Build Priorities
Pick a precision weapon you can hit with consistently, then look at mods that improve your real firing uptime. Critical damage is wasted if you run out of ammunition or lose your position after every shot. Some experienced players describe setups that return ammo from kills on Pulse-marked enemies; check the actual unlock and description before planning around that synergy.
Breacher Build Priorities
A close-range weapon and a safe route matter before raw damage stats. Work on handling, ammunition and the survival options that let you finish one push without leaving the squad. If your loadout is excellent against nearby Locust but weak during a boss Invasion across an open street, carry a more versatile backup.
Assault Build Priorities
Make the in-cover damage bonus easy to use. Start with a reliable rifle, practice Active Reload, and check mods that fit a sustained cover-fire style. If available, Sonic Disruptor improvements that help with timing or coverage make sense when you are repeatedly defending choke points. Do not build the entire class around one stationary position on missions that ask you to keep moving.
For a deeper comparison of weapon ranges and strengths, use our Gears of War: E-Day Best Weapons Tier List. That page handles the weapon-choice intent; this guide focuses on how each class contributes to Horde Siege.
Class Level Cap, Difficulty and XP Progression
Each of the four launch classes has its own 30-level track. Completed Horde Siege missions award Class XP, while multiplayer also contributes separate Player XP. Leveling Medic does not automatically level Marksman. As you increase a class level, you unlock more weapons, equipment and mods, plus health and damage improvements at certain milestones.
| Difficulty | Official Class-Level Guidance | What to Check First |
|---|---|---|
| Rookie | Entry difficulty; no higher-level range specified in the official deep dive | Practice objectives, cover transitions and extraction |
| Infantry | Level 10-20 recommended | Basic class upgrades and a useful weapon loadout |
| Commander | Level 20-30 recommended | Role synergy, ammo management and survival under modifiers |
| Allfather | Level 30 recommended | Completed class build, coordination and a safe extraction plan |
The game recommends difficulty from your Class Level, but the squad chooses what to play. An underleveled class can be a liability even if your overall Player Level is high. The September 30 launch changes also increased Commander and Allfather difficulty, so earlier beta impressions are not a substitute for your current run.
Why Weapon Parts and Extraction Matter
Unlocking a Weapon Mod through Class XP does not buy it. You still pay Weapon Parts before you can equip it. Secondary objectives and Weapon Part Stockpiles can provide Parts, but at least one player from your four-person squad must successfully extract and complete the mission to retain collected Parts. A successful main objective followed by a failed extraction is not the result you were building toward.
Some good habits are shared across all four classes:
- Do the valuable optional objective when it is safe. Extra Parts and temporary Squad Perks are useful, but not worth burning your squad’s remaining lives just before extraction.
- Do not confuse Squad Perks with permanent mods. Squad Perks expire at mission end; unlocked and purchased Weapon Mods are a separate progression system.
- Coordinate Energy spending. Energy is earned together, but each player chooses their purchases. Check who needs a turret, grenades or a defensive tool before spending carelessly.
- Keep a final-extraction plan. A surviving player still has to clear the landing zone and board the Raven in time. The Medic should not be the only Gear who knows the route.
- Re-use effective weapon mods across classes. Mod customization for the same weapon carries over to other Horde Siege classes that equip it, which makes versatile weapons particularly valuable early on.
Finish the Mod or Four-Class Goal That Is Still Missing
Class XP unlocks options; Weapon Parts pay for Weapon Mods. Pick the specific gap instead of buying another generic mission run.
Why a Good Horde Siege Squad Still Fails
| What Goes Wrong | Likely Cause | What to Change |
|---|---|---|
| Medic cannot rescue anyone | The team splits into distant fights or the Medic moves too far forward | Agree which objective route stays inside practical Stim range |
| Marksman gets isolated | They stay in one long sightline after the R.I.G. objective shifts | Call the next target and relocate with the squad |
| Breacher repeatedly dies after a kill | There is no return route once Adrenaline has done its work | Push one nearby target, secure cover, then decide on the next move |
| Assault loses every defensive position | Disruptor is used too early or the cover has no retreat lane | Hold the stun for an immediate breach and use a second fallback position |
| Good run, no Weapon Parts retained | Every squad member fails to extract | Protect the final Raven route instead of fighting for optional score |
Gears of War: E-Day Best Classes FAQ
What Is the Best Class in Gears of War: E-Day Horde Siege?
Medic is our strongest all-round pick at launch because Stim Vaporizer heals and revives Gears in range, even from other squads. A strong Marksman can contribute more focused damage, but Medic gives unpredictable teams a reliable recovery option.
What Is the Easiest Horde Siege Class for Beginners?
Assault. Fighting from cover gives a damage bonus, and Sonic Disruptor provides a straightforward way to stop incoming enemies near an objective. Medic is another good beginner option if you prefer supporting teammates.
Is Marksman Weak in Gears of War: E-Day?
No. Marksman has improved critical-hit damage and a Pulse Drone that marks enemies for the squad. It is less forgiving of missed shots and ammunition problems, but skilled players and later mod setups can make it an excellent high-damage role.
How Many Horde Siege Classes Are Available?
Four launch classes: Assault, Breacher, Marksman and Medic. The Coalition has announced plans to add more classes through post-launch updates, so the count should be checked again after a new season arrives.
Can Four Players Use the Same Class?
Yes. Duplicate classes are allowed, including a full squad of four Breachers. A mixed squad is usually easier for newer teams because it covers healing, control, precision and close-range entry.
Do Horde Siege Classes Affect Versus PvP?
No. These class rankings are for Horde Siege PvE. Versus is a separate 4v4 system with equal starting loadouts and no Horde Siege Weapon Mods.
Does Player Level Increase My Horde Class Level?
No. Player XP advances account-wide progression, while each class has its own Class XP track up to level 30. Completing missions can award both, but neither replaces the other.
