PoE 2 Forbidden Rites Event on September 4

poe2_forbidden_rites-event

PoE 2 Forbidden Rites starts on September 4, 2026 at 1:00 PM PDT with Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5. It is a separate event league with a fresh economy, new characters, eight challenges, exclusive cosmetic rewards, campaign-wide Ritual encounters, the return of the Wildwood, and a major Trial of Chaos rework.

Forbidden Rites will run alongside the existing Runes of Aldur league until the Path of Exile 2 1.0 release on December 11, 2026. Your current Runes of Aldur characters are not deleted or moved when the event begins.

Current data: Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5, Forbidden Rites Event League, reviewed August 31, 2026. Full 0.5.5 patch notes have not been published yet, so exact balance values and some reward details can still change before launch.

PoE 2 Forbidden Rites Release Date and Start Time

The Forbidden Rites Event League launches on Friday, September 4, 2026. Grinding Gear Games set the start for 1:00 PM PDT / 20:00 UTC. The game realm will go offline before the patch is deployed, but GGG has not yet published the exact maintenance start time.

What Is the PoE 2 Forbidden Rites Event?

Forbidden Rites is a Path of Exile 2 event league built around the existing Ritual mechanic. It has its own economy, stash progression, characters, Atlas progress, and set of league challenges.

This means everyone entering Forbidden Rites starts again from zero. Currency and equipment from Runes of Aldur or Standard cannot be transferred into the new event economy.

Event Detail Confirmed Rule What It Means
Patch Path of Exile 2 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites launches together with the September 4 game update.
Economy Fresh economy New characters begin without existing currency, gear, stash items, or Atlas progress.
Main mechanic Expanded Ritual Ritual becomes part of normal campaign progression instead of being mostly an endgame concern.
Challenges 8 challenges Completing event objectives unlocks exclusive cosmetics and a Hideout trophy.
End date December 11, 2026 Forbidden Rites ends when Path of Exile 2 version 1.0 launches.
Existing league Runes of Aldur continues You can keep playing your current league character and finish its challenges.

Private Leagues are also supported for Forbidden Rites. GGG opened Private League creation before launch, although those leagues cannot be played until Forbidden Rites itself goes live.

How Forbidden Rites Changes Ritual in the Campaign

The biggest event-specific change is simple: every campaign area contains a Ritual encounter. You no longer need to wait until the Atlas before Ritual becomes a regular part of your progression.

You kill monsters around the Ritual Effigy, activate it, then fight resurrected enemies. Kills generate Tribute that can be spent on rewards shown by the Ritual.

Campaign Ritual Rewards

Campaign Ritual rewards are adjusted for characters that are still leveling. GGG showed normal equipment and currency appearing alongside the more specialized rewards associated with endgame Ritual.

That gives Ritual a practical purpose during a league start. A useful weapon, resistance item, movement-speed boots, or a piece of currency can matter much more in Act 2 than it would after a character already has an established mapping setup.

Boss Ritual Chains

Forbidden Rites also puts Ritual encounters into boss arenas. Some of these encounters form connected clusters where bosses from earlier Rituals can return during later fights.

The result can be several campaign bosses active inside one Ritual encounter. The preview showed these harder Ritual chains leading to valuable rewards, including powerful Unique items.

This should make marked Ritual boss clusters one of the more important optional stops during campaign progression. The exact reward pool and drop weighting are still waiting on the final 0.5.5 data.

Forbidden Rites Party Play

Ritual has also been adjusted for groups. Each party member earns personal Tribute and can spend it on their own rewards. A player joining friends is no longer fighting the rest of the party for access to the same Tribute pool.

GGG still limits some reward control in parties, including who can reroll the Ritual shop, so group play does not multiply access without restrictions.

Forbidden Rites Challenges and Rewards

The event has eight challenges. GGG showed objectives based on normal event progression, including completing campaign Rituals, defeating specific monsters, progressing Ascendancy, mapping, and reaching level 90.

The pre-release challenge panel showed the following challenge names:

Challenge Main Progression Theme
The Riteseeker Forbidden Rites and Ritual progression
The Hunter Campaign and monster kills
The Ascendant Ascendancy progression
The Master Character progression
The Reliquarian Item and reward collection
The Nameless Forbidden Rites encounters
The Cartographer Atlas progression
The Vanquisher Endgame combat

Those names come from the pre-release event screen. The full objective text and final counters should be checked after patch 0.5.5 goes live.

Forbidden Rites Cosmetic Rewards

Challenges Completed Reward Shown in Preview Reward Type
1 Forbidden Rites Challenger Trophy Hideout Trophy Upgrade
2 Locust Footprints Effect Footprints
3 Forbidden Rites Challenger Trophy Hideout Trophy Upgrade
4 Locust Swarm Finisher Effect Finisher Effect
5 Forbidden Rites Challenger Trophy Hideout Trophy Upgrade
6 Wildwood Guardian Pet Pet
7 Forbidden Rites Challenger Trophy Hideout Trophy Upgrade
8 Wildwood Affliction Level-up Effect Level-up Effect

The short eight-challenge track makes the event rewards much easier to read than a normal long league challenge list. The real time requirement will depend on the final objectives, especially the endgame and level-based challenges.

Viridian Wildwood Returns in PoE 2 0.5.5

Forbidden Rites also brings the Viridian Wildwood into Path of Exile 2 endgame. Access starts with a new Ritual reward called the Sacred Bloom.

Use a Sacred Bloom on an Endgame Map and that map can contain an entrance to the Wildwood. Once inside, you have limited time to follow Wisp trails and collect as many Wisps as your route allows.

When you return to the original map, the collected Wisps empower monsters there. More power means more danger, but also better reward potential.

Wisp Type Confirmed Effect What Changes in the Map
Primal Wisps Can upgrade Normal monsters into Magic monsters More empowered monster packs and harder fights
Vivid Wisps Add additional modifiers to Rare monsters Rares become more dangerous and more heavily modified
Wild Wisps Increase item rarity from monsters Improves the rarity side of map rewards
Sacred Wisp Effect not fully revealed GGG has shown the Wisp but is keeping its exact function secret before launch

Ritual Tablets can interact with this system as well, including modifiers that affect the amount of Wisps available. The final mod values are one of the things that need the 0.5.5 patch notes before they can be compared properly.

Trial of Chaos Rework in Patch 0.5.5

The Trial of Chaos receives the largest system rework in patch 0.5.5. These changes are part of the base update, so they are not restricted to Forbidden Rites characters. Players in Runes of Aldur and Standard can use the new Trial system too.

The old Trial could force a long run through awkward objectives while stacking modifiers that gave the player little in return. Patch 0.5.5 changes both the pacing and the reward structure.

Trial Feature 0.5.5 Change Practical Effect
Maximum length Up to 30 rooms Endgame players can keep pushing beyond the old 10-room structure.
Leaving the Trial Runs can be paused between rooms You can leave and return later instead of finishing a long run in one session.
Objectives More rooms focus on killing enemies Escort and other specialized objectives appear less often.
Modifiers Modifier progression reworked Lower tiers are less immediately punishing and modifiers contribute reward value.
Wager Modifiers New optional risk modifiers Players can deliberately make a run harder in exchange for stronger rewards.
Room rewards Additional chests between rooms Long runs provide more reward checkpoints.
Reward pool Focus on Currency and Soul Cores Random Corrupted item rewards are removed from the main pool.
Soul Cores Existing cores reworked and new ones added Trial-specific rewards gain more value for endgame characters.
Trialmaster Fragments All three can be earned in one deep run Strong characters get a more direct path to the Trialmaster encounter.

The important change for farming is the new decision between stopping with secured rewards and continuing deeper. Room 30 is designed for endgame characters, so the best Wager combinations will need real live testing before anyone can call one route optimal.

Other PoE 2 0.5.5 Endgame Changes

Forbidden Rites is the event mechanic, but patch 0.5.5 changes several permanent endgame systems at the same time.

Abyssal Ravines

Abyssal Ravines are new structures that appear across the Atlas. A ravine connects a sequence of maps containing Abyss encounters.

Rewards increase as you progress through the chain and push back the Abyssal Legion. Reaching the last map on the ravine gives a guaranteed Abyssal boss encounter.

This creates a clearer farming route for players who already favor Abyss content. Actual currency per hour cannot be calculated until the live reward rates are known.

Faster Fortress Completion

GGG is shortening part of the Fortress grind after the main Arbiter of Divinity progression. The new route gives advanced characters another way to deal with remaining Fortress sections instead of repeating the full original progression every time.

The exact requirements should be checked against the final patch notes before planning an Atlas route around this shortcut.

Runes of Aldur Goes Core

Runes of Aldur content is being added to the core Path of Exile 2 game with patch 0.5.5. That includes Expedition content and its related NPCs.

Expedition can appear during normal progression and receives a new Expedition Tablet type for endgame. The preview showed Tablet modifiers capable of adding more Expedition content to an area, including extra Expeditions and Remnant encounters.

This applies outside Forbidden Rites too. Standard characters gain access to the core Runes of Aldur systems after the patch.

Forbidden Rites vs Runes of Aldur

Forbidden Rites does not replace Runes of Aldur on September 4. Both leagues continue at the same time until version 1.0.

Feature Forbidden Rites Runes of Aldur
Economy Fresh economy from September 4 Existing economy continues
Characters New event character required Existing characters remain playable
Challenges 8 new event challenges Existing challenges can still be completed
Main mechanic Ritual in every campaign area Existing league progression
0.5.5 system changes Available Available
Scheduled end December 11, 2026 December 11, 2026

If your main goal is the new cosmetics or a fresh trade economy, you need a Forbidden Rites character. If you are still finishing Runes of Aldur progression, there is no requirement to abandon it on September 4.

Is the Duelist Coming With Forbidden Rites?

No. The Duelist does not release with patch 0.5.5 or the Forbidden Rites Event League.

GGG showed the Duelist during the same August 27 presentation, which is why the two updates are easy to mix together. The class arrives with the Path of Exile 2 1.0 full release on December 11, 2026.

Swords and the Duelist’s new combat systems should therefore not be part of Forbidden Rites league-start planning.

Will PoE 2 Builds Change in Patch 0.5.5?

GGG has said that the broad character balance pass originally considered for this update is being held for version 1.0. Forbidden Rites is focused on the event, Trial of Chaos, Wildwood, and endgame changes rather than a large skill and Ascendancy rebalance.

That makes current 0.5 build knowledge more useful than it would normally be on a fresh league start. It does not guarantee that every item, bug fix, or small numerical value stays untouched. The final 0.5.5 patch notes still need to be checked before locking in a build.

What Is Still Unconfirmed Before September 4?

The core structure of Forbidden Rites is already clear, but several details should not be treated as final until GGG publishes the written 0.5.5 notes.

Pending Detail Current Status
Full patch notes GGG says they will be published later this week.
Item filter changes Confirmed to be coming, with separate information due before launch.
Exact Ritual reward weighting Not published.
Sacred Wisp effect Shown, but its exact effect has not been revealed.
Final challenge objective values Preview UI exists, but the live event panel is the final reference.
Best Wager Modifiers Cannot be ranked accurately until modifier values and live rewards are tested.

We will update this guide after the 0.5.5 patch notes and again after Forbidden Rites launches if the live event differs from the August 27 preview.

What Should You Do Before the Forbidden Rites Launch?

If you plan to move into the fresh league, the main decision is your starting character. Because 0.5.5 is not built around a large balance reset, a proven current build is a safer league-start choice than an untested setup that depends on an undocumented interaction.

Expect the first few days of trade to behave like a normal fresh economy. Basic leveling items, useful Rare gear, Uncut Gems, crafting currency, and reliable early-map equipment matter far more when nobody has an established stash.

Ritual should also change the normal campaign route. You do not need to full-clear every area just because a Ritual exists there, but boss Ritual clusters and rewards that immediately fix a weak gear slot can be worth the extra time.

Once you reach the Atlas, Wildwood, Abyssal Ravines, Expedition, and the new Trial of Chaos give several different endgame routes. There is no reliable “best farm” before September 4 because the important drop rates have not been tested on the live version.

Sources and Live Update Policy

This article uses Grinding Gear Games’ August 27, 2026 Path of Exile 2 0.5.5 announcement, the official Forbidden Rites FAQ published on August 31, and the systems demonstrated during the official Duelist Deep Dive and 0.5.5 Event League presentation.

Preview-screen information such as challenge names and reward milestones is labeled as pre-release data. We do not use estimated drop rates, invented currency-per-hour numbers, or unconfirmed Sacred Wisp effects as facts.

The next review is scheduled after GGG publishes the full Path of Exile 2 0.5.5 patch notes. Launch information will then be checked again against the live Forbidden Rites client on September 4.

Final Verdict

PoE 2 Forbidden Rites is a fresh event league starting September 4 at 1:00 PM PDT with patch 0.5.5. Its main change is Ritual appearing throughout the campaign, including boss-based Ritual chains, followed by Sacred Bloom and Wildwood farming in the Atlas.

The wider 0.5.5 update also gives Trial of Chaos a much larger endgame role with up to 30 rooms, Wager Modifiers, revised rewards, and a route to all three Trialmaster Fragments in one deep run. Abyssal Ravines and core Runes of Aldur content add more options once the campaign is finished.

Runes of Aldur stays live, the Duelist waits until December 11, and the full patch notes are still pending. If you want the new eight-challenge reward track or the fresh September economy, create a Forbidden Rites character when the league opens.
