Inventory space is one of the first problems you hit in WoW Forever. Quest items take the last empty slot, cloth piles up on your way to the next town, and the dungeon group wants to keep moving while you sort your bags. The fix is not to farm every rare pouch on a loot table. It is to collect the guaranteed bags along your leveling route, replace the smallest ones first, and save the expensive crafts for when they actually make sense.
Quick answer: Get the free 6-slot bag from your starting-zone quest. Pick up the 8-slot Scuffed Shipping Crate in Ratchet if you pass through The Barrens, or the 8-slot Old Blanchy’s Feed Pouch in Westfall as Alliance. At level 14 and beyond, the Stepping Stones quest in the Cozy Sleeping Bag chain is unusually valuable because its listed rewards include two separate 12-slot bags. Wailing Caverns and the Horde-only Skywatcher Plateau quest provide more options. Fill the remaining slots with affordable crafted or vendor bags rather than spending hours on low-probability drops.
Current status: As of October 17, 2026, WoW Forever is still in its level-30 beta, with the full level-60 launch scheduled for November 4. This guide separates bags you can work toward in the beta from high-skill Tailoring recipes intended for later progression. Item names, quest rewards and profession requirements use the Forever database; low-level drop chances and future recipe access can still change.
The Upgrades Worth Your Time
Prioritize guaranteed rewards and convenient upgrades before chasing rare drops.
The Fastest Way to Fix Your Bag Space
You do not need the rarest bag to feel the difference. Four equipped 6-slot bags provide 24 additional slots; upgrading them to four 10-slot bags provides 40, a gain of 16. A single free 12-slot bag replaces two 6-slot bags’ worth of capacity in one equipment slot.
| When | Best Bag Upgrade | Where To Go | Why It Is Worth Doing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting zone | Free 6-slot race quest bag | Your race’s first settlements | Guaranteed storage without spending gold |
| From level 9 | Scuffed Shipping Crate, 8 slots | Ratchet, The Barrens | Both factions; short collection quest if you are nearby |
| Alliance, from level 9 | Old Blanchy’s Feed Pouch, 8 slots | Westfall | Natural stop for an Elwynn-to-Westfall route |
| From level 14 | Old Toolbox + Sturdy Lunchbox, 12 slots each | Stepping Stones in the Cozy Sleeping Bag chain | Two useful full-size bags from the same quest reward list |
| Dungeon leveling | Deviate Hide Pack, 10 slots | Wailing Caverns | Both factions; collect 20 Deviate Hides |
| Horde, from level 23 | Spidersilk Pouch, 12 slots | Skywatcher Plateau, Mulgore | Strong targeted upgrade for an ordinary bag slot |
| Whenever affordable | 8- to 12-slot crafted or vendor bags | Tailors, bag vendors, Auction House | Fills empty slots and avoids inefficient travel |
What to do first: If you are below level 10, take the local quest bag and check whether inexpensive six- or eight-slot bags are available. If you are heading toward The Barrens, add Ratchet and Wailing Caverns to your route. If you are already following the Cozy Sleeping Bag chain, do not skip the Stepping Stones bag rewards.
Less Time Sorting, More Time Playing
Free quests solve your first bag shortage. After that, choose whether to earn gold for Auction House bags or work toward Tailoring. Profession materials kits are a post-launch self-play option, not ready-made bags.
All Seven Free Starting-Zone Bag Quests
WoW Forever adds an early bag quest for every original starting-race route plus the Skyborne starting area. The seven rewards below are normal 6-slot bags, not reagent-only containers. Take the one in your own starting zone; you do not need to cross into another faction’s territory for it.
| Race / Faction | Quest and Where It Starts | What You Need To Do | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human / Alliance | Book Return — Goldshire, Elwynn Forest | Recover the missing books around Fargodeep Mine. Watch the deeper mine paths if you are underleveled. | Book Bag — 6 slots |
| Dwarf & Gnome / Alliance | Grund and Gozwin — Anvilmar, Dun Morogh | Reach the camp in the northwestern hills, retrieve the mechanic’s log and defeat the Snow Leopard Prowler. | Canvas Latchbag — 6 slots |
| Night Elf / Alliance | Soft Saber Pelts — Dolanaar, Teldrassil | Collect six Soft Nightsaber Pelts from the local cats. | Soft Saber Sack — 6 slots |
| Undead / Horde | Sticks and Bones — Brill, Tirisfal Glades | Gather six Dry Branches. Look carefully around the ground; the objects can blend into the scenery. | Collecting Basket — 6 slots |
| Orc & Troll / Horde | Carry Your Weight — Razor Hill watchtower, Durotar | Bring Furl Scornbrow eight Canvas Scraps. | Handmade Leather Bag — 6 slots |
| Tauren / Horde | Grace of An’she and Mu’sha — Red Cloud Mesa, Mulgore | Carry smoldering incense to the shrine before the timed quest expires. | Scorched Leather Pouch — 6 slots |
| Skyborne / both faction routes | The Problem With Prideclaws — Shen’dar Village, Zephras Isle | Collect ten Prideclaw Pelts. Complete the village introduction first if this quest does not appear. | Simple Leather Satchel — 6 slots |
Useful rule: Complete your own free bag quest even if a random pouch has already dropped. Once your equipped bag positions are full, replace the smallest bag; do not pay a large premium merely to replace one 6-slot bag with another of the same size.
Best Early Quest Bags: 8, 10 and 12 Slots
The next bags are often more valuable than killing random mobs for colored pouches. These quests give you a defined task, a fixed reward and often experience along the way.
Scuffed Shipping Crate: 8 Slots in Ratchet (Both Factions)
Speak to Wrenix the Wretched in Ratchet, The Barrens for Parts and Pieces. Starting at level 9, retrieve five Handfuls of Complicated Parts from the upper pirate camp south of Ratchet, then bring them back for the Scuffed Shipping Crate.
This is an excellent stop if a boat, dungeon group or leveling route already brings you to Ratchet. Do not make a long intercontinental trip solely to gain two slots over your existing six-slot bag.
Old Blanchy’s Feed Pouch: 8 Slots in Westfall (Alliance)
When you enter Westfall from Elwynn Forest, pick up Poor Old Blanchy from Verna Furlbrow. Collect eight Handfuls of Oats scattered around the Westfall farms. The reward is Old Blanchy’s Feed Pouch, an 8-slot bag in the Forever item data.
If an old Classic guide says this is a four-slot bag, check that you are not reading an outdated version of the item. The Forever database lists eight slots.
Hunting Satchel: 10 Slots in Loch Modan (Alliance)
Vyrin’s Revenge finishes at Farstrider Lodge in Loch Modan and is available from level 15. Work through the local quest involving Ol’ Sooty. The completion reward includes a 10-slot Hunting Satchel in addition to a choice between a Hunting Ammo Sack and a Hunting Quiver.
That detail matters: the ordinary Hunting Satchel is not merely an alternative to the ammo bags. If your Alliance character is already leveling in Loch Modan, this is a useful upgrade; the elite quest can be more troublesome if you are attempting it alone at the minimum level.
Stepping Stones: Two 12-Slot Bags From One Quest (Both Factions)
One of the best inventory rewards in Forever is hidden in the Cozy Sleeping Bag quest chain. The Stepping Stones reward list includes both an Old Toolbox and a Sturdy Lunchbox; both are ordinary 12-slot bags. That is two upgraded bag slots from one quest, not just a novelty item.
The chain starts at level 14 and takes you across zones before the Stepping Stones objective in the mountains around Stonetalon. Follow our WoW Forever Cozy Sleeping Bag quest route for the faction-specific starting points and the journey between objectives. It is worth combining with your existing travel plans; the cross-continent detour is less appealing if your current bags are already full of affordable 12-slot replacements.
Do not confuse the rewards: Cozy Sleeping Bag itself is an item used for its experience/rest utility, not a container you equip for inventory slots. The Old Toolbox and Sturdy Lunchbox are the actual storage upgrades.
Wailing Caverns: The Two 10-Slot Bag Opportunities
Wailing Caverns in The Barrens offers a reliable quest reward and a less reliable boss drop. Both are useful while leveling, but they are not equally worth farming.
Deviate Hide Pack: Choose the Bag, Not the Leggings
Find Nalpak in the cave area above the dungeon entrance, reached by climbing around the outside of the entrance rock formation. Accept Deviate Hides, available to Alliance and Horde, then collect 20 Deviate Hides from the creatures around and inside Wailing Caverns.
On turn-in you must choose between the 10-slot Deviate Hide Pack and Slick Deviate Leggings. They are not both guaranteed rewards. If you have no large bags yet, the extra loot capacity often gives you more lasting value than an early pair of leggings you will soon replace.
Snakeskin Bag: Drop From Lady Anacondra
Lady Anacondra, one of the Wailing Caverns bosses, can drop the Snakeskin Bag, another 10-slot bag. It is a bind-on-pickup drop, so you cannot count on buying it from another player. The beta video reports roughly a five-percent chance; treat that as an observed estimate, not a guaranteed current rate.
If the bag drops during a normal run, great. Repeatedly resetting the dungeon just for it is harder to justify when guaranteed quest rewards or inexpensive crafted bags are available. The WoW Forever Dungeons Guide can help you combine this stop with other dungeon objectives.
Horde-Only: Spidersilk Pouch at Skywatcher Plateau
For Horde players who have reached level 23, Stronger than Steel is a particularly attractive bag quest. Head to the Skywatcher Plateau area north of Thunder Bluff in Mulgore and gather three Crystalline Silk from Gloomrise Spinners.
The reward screen offers a 12-slot Spidersilk Pouch or a 10-slot Spidersilk Sack, plus a Crystal Thread Cloak. These are two different bag types, and you choose one of them:
- Spidersilk Pouch, 12 slots: a normal bag for weapons, quest items, herbs, cloth, potions and other everyday loot. This is the default choice if your main problem is a full inventory.
- Spidersilk Sack, 10 slots: a specialized reagent bag for crafting materials. It may be better when you already have enough normal bag space and specifically need reagent organization.
At the minimum quest level, be careful around the local spiders; taking this on a little later can make the trip easier. Alliance players should use the Wailing Caverns, Loch Modan or Stepping Stones alternatives rather than following a Horde-only route.
Where to Find Small Colored Pouches
Small black, red, blue, green and brown pouches are familiar 6-slot world drops. The Forever beta has shown additional creature and fishing sources. They are useful when you have an empty bag slot, but the minute you own larger bags their value falls quickly.
| Bag | Notable Beta Lead | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Small Black Pouch, 6 slots | Frozen Murloc in Elwynn Forest | Try only if the encounter is already on your route |
| Small Red Pouch, 6 slots | Mottled boars; reports also mention starter-zone fishing | Pick up naturally while leveling or fishing |
| Small Brown / Blue Pouches, 6 slots | Makrura Snapclaws along the eastern Durotar coast | Extra loot from convenient coastal kills |
| Small Blue Pouch, 6 slots | Stephen Bhartec near Deathknell | Incidental drop rather than a mandatory rare-mob camp |
| Small Green Pouch, 6 slots | Various low-level world drops | Replace an empty slot; do not dedicate a long farm |
Individual drop-rate figures seen in beta videos can be misleading, especially for rare creatures with very few recorded kills. Before camping a named enemy, check a bag vendor or the Auction House. The Small Brown Pouch is also vendor-listed, and vendors offer larger basic bags such as the 8-slot Brown Leather Satchel. A guaranteed purchase can be more efficient than an hour spent hoping for a six-slot drop.
Crafted Bags: From Linen to Bottomless
Tailoring is the long-term way to make regular bags for your main character, friends or alts. Leatherworking provides the early six-slot Kodo Hide Bag. You do not have to learn either profession to equip a bag made by someone else.
| Bag | Normal Slots | Crafting Skill | When It Makes Sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linen Bag | 6 | Tailoring 45 | Cheap early bag for unfilled slots or alts |
| Kodo Hide Bag | 6 | Early Leatherworking | Uses the profession route if you already work leather |
| Woolen Bag | 8 | Tailoring 80 | Budget upgrade over six-slot bags |
| Small Silk Pack | 10 | Tailoring 150 | Practical mid-level all-purpose replacement |
| Mageweave Bag | 12 | Tailoring 225 | Good medium-term goal at higher profession skill |
| Runecloth Bag | 14 | Tailoring 260 | Later-game crafted general bag |
| Traveler’s Backpack | 16 | World drop, not crafted | Rare late-game alternative if found or affordably traded |
| Mooncloth Bag | 18 | Tailoring 300 | High-end bag requiring more advanced materials |
| Bottomless Bag | 20 | Tailoring 300 | Advanced craft; recipe, reagents and camp Loom are the limiting factors |
Forever crafting difference: Several bag recipes in the Forever database produce two bags per craft, including the listed Bottomless Bag recipe. When deciding whether to buy cloth or a finished bag, check the actual output quantity and the entire updated reagent list rather than reusing Classic-era material calculators. Mooncloth and Bottomless Bag recipes use changed materials.
What is available now? The October beta stops at character level 30, so do not treat level-60 materials, higher profession tiers or endgame bags as something you can reliably obtain on your beta character. The Forever Tailoring guide and recipe list is a useful reference for the crafting skill requirements; confirm the exact recipe source and ingredients before making an expensive purchase.
Are 20 Slots Really the Maximum?
It would be misleading to call Bottomless Bag the absolute largest item in the Forever database. The list also contains a 24-slot Crusader’s Knapsack and a 30-slot Crimson Dawnwoven Bag. However, both come from recipes associated with earlier Season of Discovery content, and their reliable acquisition path in WoW Forever has not been established. For a practical upgrade plan, stick to the bags with confirmed quest sources and documented normal Tailoring progression rather than assuming these larger database entries can already be crafted.
Other late-game bags, including the 14-slot Troll-hide Bag, also appear as world drops. They are welcome finds but poor guaranteed farming targets. The same applies to the 16-slot Traveler’s Backpack, which is associated with rare drops and occasional fishing rather than a straightforward quest.
Should You Buy Bags or Craft Them?
Check your current bag setup before spending gold. There are two different problems: an empty equipment slot and a small equipped bag. The first is urgent; the second becomes urgent only when you frequently fill the space before reaching a vendor.
| Your Situation | Best Default Action | What To Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| You have an empty bag slot and almost no gold | Finish your starter quest; compare six-slot vendor bags | Rare-mob grinding that stops all leveling progress |
| You have four six-slot bags | Take convenient eight-, ten- and twelve-slot rewards | Replacing equal-sized bags at a premium |
| You are near Ratchet or Wailing Caverns | Combine the 8-slot crate and 10-slot dungeon quest with normal objectives | Traveling back and forth for a marginal upgrade |
| You have cloth and Tailoring skill | Compare full material cost per bag with the Auction House price | Assuming self-crafted bags are free because you gathered the cloth |
| You have gold but little playing time | Buy normal 10- to 12-slot bags if reasonably priced | Spending more in travel time than the bags save |
| You are preparing for launch endgame | Plan Runecloth, Mooncloth and other verified patterns after launch | Pre-paying for unconfirmed high-capacity recipes |
Use a cost-per-slot check: A ten-slot bag replacing a six-slot bag gains you four slots; a twelve-slot bag replacing a six-slot bag gains six. Divide the actual upgrade cost by the new slots gained, not by the full bag size. The cheapest bag by sticker price is not always the cheapest upgrade.
If Tailoring is your plan after launch, WoW Forever Profession Kits can supply a self-play materials route when fulfillment begins. They do not instantly provide finished bags, profession skill, trainers, recipe unlocks or special dungeon blueprints. Players who would rather buy completed bags only need a seller, vendor or the Auction House.
Make More Room Without Buying Another Bag
Once all four bag positions are filled, the easiest extra capacity often comes from what you carry. New Forever collectibles, profession items and alternate gear sets make this especially important.
- Sell gray-quality trash whenever you visit a town. Keep a little room for quest turn-ins and boss loot; the value of a handful of low-price drops is not worth missing a useful item.
- Move reserve gear and seldom-used tools to the bank. Keep the second equipment set you actually switch to; bank the third set you only use for a specific encounter.
- Use a reagent bag for materials. Reagent bags are specialized storage and do not behave like ordinary bags. Put profession stacks there and preserve normal slots for mixed loot.
- Check stack counts before a dungeon. Combine partial stacks, craft or bank spare materials, and remove old quest items when they are no longer needed.
- Make space before looting a boss. Sorting mid-combat or after a group has moved on is a much worse time to find out that every slot is occupied.
- Remember class-specific storage. Hunters may need a quiver or ammunition pouch and Warlocks may use soul-shard bags. Those specialized slots can be worth more than their raw general-inventory count.
If you are short of gold for bag upgrades, use a small, repeatable farming route instead of taking on an expensive crafting profession purely for inventory. Our WoW Forever Gold Farming Guide covers the actual vendor-versus-Auction-House decision for early characters.
Three Bag Mistakes That Waste Time
- Confusing a named satchel with inventory storage: Satchel of Potions is a trinket that generates a random effect when used, not a bag with equipment slots. One possible outcome is self-inflicted fire damage. Do not farm it to increase your inventory.
- Taking the wrong quest reward: Deviate Hides offers a choice between leggings and a normal bag. Stronger than Steel offers a normal 12-slot pouch or a specialized 10-slot reagent sack. Read the actual reward type before clicking.
- Copying Classic loot tables blindly: Some rewards have changed slot counts in Forever, such as Old Blanchy’s Feed Pouch. New beta loot tables and the availability of later-era patterns can change again before or after launch.
A Simple Bag Route for Your Faction
Alliance
Take your racial starting bag first. Humans naturally move into Westfall for Old Blanchy’s eight-slot pouch; Dwarves and Gnomes can reach the Loch Modan chain for the ten-slot Hunting Satchel. At level 14, consider the Cozy Sleeping Bag chain if you want its two twelve-slot Stepping Stones rewards. When Wailing Caverns becomes a planned dungeon stop, pick up Deviate Hides. Fill remaining positions with affordable crafted bags, not extra journeys across the map.
Horde
Complete your local starter-bag quest, then check Ratchet for the eight-slot Scuffed Shipping Crate when you reach The Barrens. Pick up Deviate Hides before Wailing Caverns, and add Stepping Stones if you are following the Cozy Sleeping Bag chain. At level 23 or later, the Skywatcher Plateau quest gives you a clear twelve-slot normal-bag target. After that, buy or craft only the upgrades that add meaningful space.
Neither route requires Tailoring. Your profession choice can remain focused on your class, economy and leveling plans; bags are a problem you can solve through quests, vendors and other players.
