To level Blacksmithing from 1 to 300 in WoW Forever, start with Rough Stone crafts, move into Copper and Bronze gear, use Iron and Mithril recipes for the middle ranks, and plan a costly Thorium-based finish. Train the next profession rank before reaching the current skill cap. Pair Blacksmithing with Mining if you want to gather your own bars, or buy reagents in smaller batches if you use the Auction House.
This is a self-play crafting route, not a list of the strongest Blacksmithing gear. WoW Forever changes many recipe skill-up colors compared with original Classic, so a recipe that was cheap to spam in an older guide may stop giving points sooner. The November 4, 2026 Level 60 release follows the Level 30 beta; late Artisan stages below are a route based on Forever client records, not a claimed completed 1–300 launch run. Your profession window is the final check for the recipe you have learned, its current color, and its reagents.
Blacksmithing 1–300 at a Glance
| Skill range | Main materials | What you craft | Key decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–75 | Rough Stone, Coarse Stone, Copper Bar | Copper Rod, sharpening/grinding stones, early Copper gear | Learn Journeyman before 75 |
| 75–150 | Silver and Gold Bars, Bronze, Heavy Stone, Iron | Skeleton keys, Bronze weapons, Green Iron Bracers | Buy Bronze or smelt it yourself |
| 150–225 | Iron, Solid Stone, Mithril, Mageweave, Citrine | Green Iron Bracers, stone crafts, Mithril armor | Save intermediate grinding stones |
| 225–300 | Mithril, Truesilver, Thorium, Dense Stone, rare reagents | Dense Sharpening Stones, Ebon Shiv, Thorium armor and weapons | Compare recipe access and reagent cost before buying |
The economical rule: orange recipes give reliable skill-ups, yellow recipes can miss, green recipes are poor for bulk leveling, and gray recipes give none. You usually save money by crafting a cheap yellow recipe a little longer, but not if its ingredients cost more than a newer orange recipe. Blacksmithing’s late levels can be more expensive than its early ranks combined.
Choose Your Route Before Buying Materials
There are two sensible ways to level. DIY with Mining works well if you enjoy gathering ores and stone while leveling a character. DIY with bought materials can be faster when bars are available on the Auction House, but it is vulnerable to fresh-server prices. The third option is to have the profession skill leveled for you when acquiring Thorium, recipes, and trainer access is a bigger cost in time than you want to spend.
First decide whether you are paying mainly in farming time, in Auction House gold, or in a service order. You can follow every step below yourself; choosing a service does not automatically grant rare plans, specialization unlocks or a complete recipe collection.
Blacksmithing 1–300: DIY or Skill Leveling Service?
The core decision is whether to gather bars and craft yourself or save time on the expensive late ranks. Choose the route that fits your gold, time and profession plans.
Blacksmithing Trainers, Ranks and Tools
| Rank | Skill cap | Usual eligibility | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | 75 | Start of profession | Learn Blacksmithing from a trainer in a starter area or major city. |
| Journeyman | 150 | About skill 50, character level 10 | Train early so you can continue beyond 75. |
| Expert | 225 | About skill 125, character level 20 | Find a trainer who actually offers Expert; not every early trainer does. |
| Artisan | 300 | About skill 200, character level 35 | Visit an Artisan-capable trainer before your skill reaches 225. |
Keep a Blacksmith Hammer in your bags and access to an Anvil for armor and weapon crafts that require one. Ask a city guard for the profession trainer location or check the trainer’s actual menu. In the profession panel (default K), select a recipe to see its current ingredients and difficulty color. Some higher-rank teachers are outside capital cities; if a trainer stops offering upgrades, the skill cap is probably not a bug.
You can learn two primary professions. Blacksmithing plus Mining is a practical pair, but two crafting professions are possible if you plan to buy ore and bars. For the broader choice and combat benefits, see the WoW Forever Profession Tier List.
Blacksmithing Leveling Route 1–75: Rough Stone and Copper
Use cheap stone recipes for most of your first 75 points. Do not buy a full stack of every bar up front: the early recipe colors differ from Classic and a smaller Copper budget may be enough. Keep spare Rough Grinding Stones because Silver Skeleton Keys later consume them.
| Skill band | Practical craft | Reagents per craft | Why or when to switch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | Copper Rod | 1 Copper Bar | A low-cost orange opening before the stone route begins. |
| 10–25 | Rough Sharpening Stone | 1 Rough Stone | It turns yellow after 15; continue while affordable, but expect some missed skill-ups. |
| 25–40 | Rough Grinding Stone | 2 Rough Stone | Orange in this range. Keep the stones for later Silver Skeleton Keys. |
| 40–65 | Coarse Sharpening Stone, then Rough Grinding Stone | 1 Coarse Stone or 2 Rough Stone | Compare yellow chances and your stone supply; Rough Grinding Stone works into this range but gets less reliable. |
| 65–75 | Copper Chain Pants or Copper Chain Belt | 4 Copper Bar per pants or 6 Copper Bar per belt | Use inexpensive Copper equipment to reach Journeyman rather than forcing green stone crafts. |
Training breakpoint: Journeyman raises the cap above 75; train it before you hit that cap. You can also craft the new Sharpening Wheel from skill 20, but it is primarily a Camping utility rather than the foundation of the leveling route.
Blacksmithing Leveling Route 75–150: Bronze and Early Iron
The old Classic shortcut of spamming Bronze Leggings and bracers is unreliable here. Instead, move between skeleton keys, Bronze weapons and early Iron crafts as their Forever difficulty colors change. Use lower-volume purchases, particularly for Silver and Gold Bars.
| Skill band | Craft | Reagents per craft | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 75–85 | Silver Skeleton Key | 1 Silver Bar + 1 Rough Grinding Stone | Key crafting requires the grinding stones saved from the 25–40 stage. |
| 85–100 | Bronze Mace, then Bronze Shortsword | Mace: 6 Bronze Bar + 4 Weak Flux + 1 Medium Leather. Shortsword: 5 Bronze Bar + 4 Weak Flux + 2 Medium Leather. | Choose by your bars and leather; weapons have more useful skill-up windows than many older Classic Bronze recipes. |
| 100–115 | Heavy Grinding Stone, with Heavy Sharpening Stone as a bridge | 3 Heavy Stone per grinding stone; 1 Heavy Stone per sharpening stone | These inexpensive crafts become unreliable quickly. Save some grinding stones for later Golden Skeleton Keys. |
| 115–125 | Bronze Shortsword | 5 Bronze Bar + 4 Weak Flux + 2 Medium Leather | Costs more per craft but stays useful after Heavy Stone recipes fall off. |
| 125–140 | Iron Buckle, Golden Skeleton Key or Bronze Shortsword | Iron Buckle: 1 Iron Bar. Key: 1 Gold Bar + 1 Heavy Grinding Stone. Shortsword: reagents above. | Use inexpensive buckles first; do not buy Gold Bars if the weapon route costs less per expected point. |
| 140–150 | Green Iron Bracers | 6 Iron Bar + 1 Green Dye | Reliable early Iron recipe from skill 140. You will continue it after training Expert. |
Bronze supply check: smelting Bronze uses Copper and Tin. Compare finished Bronze Bars against ore prices. Weak Flux and Green Dye can usually be obtained from trade-supply vendors; buy them before leaving for a forge.
Blacksmithing Leveling Route 150–225: Iron, Mithril and Your First Plans
Train Expert before 150. For this band, the critical Forever difference is how early some recipes go gray: for example, Solid Grinding Stone is gray at 185 in the October client data, so do not copy a Classic route recommending it at 200. You can finish 220–225 with a trainer craft even without a dropped armor plan.
| Skill band | Craft | Reagents per craft | Access and fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150–175 | Green Iron Bracers | 6 Iron Bar + 1 Green Dye | Orange through 165, yellow afterward; once green after 178, move on rather than spam. |
| 175–185 | Solid Sharpening Stone or Solid Grinding Stone | 1 Solid Stone per sharpening stone, 4 per grinding stone | Both can bridge this short window; grindstone is gray at 185, so only make extras as reagents for later recipes. |
| 185–200 | Heavy Mithril Gauntlet | 6 Mithril Bar + 4 Mageweave Cloth | Available as a useful Mithril transition; switch when the skill-up chance falls. |
| 200–220 | Mithril Plate Bracers | 8 Mithril Bar + 2 Citrine | Plans sold by Gharash (Swamp of Sorrows) or Harggan (The Hinterlands); orange before 210, then yellow/green. Alternatively compare trainer-made Heavy Mithril Breastplate. |
| 220–225 | Heavy Mithril Breastplate or Heavy Mithril Helm | 16 Mithril Bar per breastplate; 14 Mithril Bar + 1 Aquamarine per helm | Breastplate is trainer-taught; helm needs a dropped plan. Avoid spending on the plan just for five points. |
Travel decision: Artisan Blacksmithing normally requires skill 200 and character level 35. The neutral Artisan teacher Brikk Keencraft is in Stranglethorn Vale. Plan the trip once you can train, not after filling the 225 cap. A lower-level beta character cannot finish this part until the level cap allows the required trainer rank.
Blacksmithing Leveling Route 225–300: Plan Access Matters
These are data-backed, not fully play-tested, Level 60 destination routes. Forever’s October client tables support the recipes and color breakpoints; the launch economy, rare-plan supply and actual skill-up results can differ. In this band, missing plans matter more than the cost of a single bar: check availability before buying hundreds of reagents.
| Skill band | Preferred or accessible craft | Reagents per craft | What can block the route? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 225–235 | Dense Sharpening Stone | 1 Dense Stone | Trainer craft; orange until 230, gray at 235. This is a cheaper bridge than converting four Dense Stones into each grinding stone. |
| 235–255 | Radiant Belt if you own the dropped plan; otherwise Heavy Mithril Boots, then Ebon Shiv | Radiant Belt: 10 Thorium Bar + 2 Heart of Fire. Boots: 14 Mithril Bar + 4 Thick Leather. Ebon Shiv: 12 Mithril Bar + 6 Truesilver Bar + 2 Star Ruby + 1 Solid Grinding Stone + 2 Thick Leather. | Radiant Belt plan drops. Heavy Mithril Boots become gray at 250. Ebon Shiv plans are sold by Magnus Frostwake; check his availability before buying gems. |
| 255–265 | Imperial Plate Bracers, or continue Ebon Shiv | Bracers: 20 Thorium Bar + 1 Star Ruby. Ebon Shiv: same reagents as above. | Imperial Plate plans come from a quest; Ebon Shiv can be more accessible but requires its vendor plans and many gems. |
| 265–285 | Girdle of the Dawn; alternative Ornate Thorium Handaxe | Girdle: 8 Thorium Bar + 6 Truesilver Bar + 1 Righteous Orb. Handaxe: 20 Thorium Bar + 2 Large Opal + 2 Dense Grinding Stone + 4 Rugged Leather. | Girdle plans require Argent Dawn access and expensive Righteous Orbs. Handaxe uses costly bars and another plan. |
| 285–295 | Continue Girdle of the Dawn or a currently yellow Thorium weapon | Same per-craft materials as previous band; Huge Thorium Battleaxe requires 40 Thorium Bar + 6 Dense Grinding Stone + 6 Rugged Leather. | Girdle turns yellow at 285, green at 295. Battleaxe also needs plans and enormous quantities of Thorium; compare expected cost. |
| 295–300 | Radiant Leggings if you obtained the dropped plan; otherwise green Girdle or another valid Thorium recipe | Radiant Leggings: 20 Thorium Bar + 4 Heart of Fire. Girdle: reagents above. | Radiant Leggings remains orange until 300 in the current client data. Without its plan, the final five points can require many green crafts. |
Avoid the Thorium trap. Ten Huge Thorium Battleaxes consume 400 Thorium Bars, 60 Dense Grinding Stones and 60 Rugged Leather. Because some late recipes go green before 300, ten crafts do not necessarily mean ten skill points. If a recipe is gray, stop immediately. If a craft is green, compare its expected cost with finding a better plan rather than blindly buying another stack of bars.
How to recover if you cannot get a late plan
- Open your Blacksmithing panel and list the recipes still orange or yellow at your current skill.
- Confirm how the desired plans are obtained: trainer, sold plans, reputation, quest or random drop. Do not mistake a recipe from an Auction House listing for a trained spell.
- For 235–265, compare vendor Ebon Shiv with accessible Mithril alternatives. For 265–300, compare available Thorium recipes and the cost of unlocking Girdle of the Dawn.
- Calculate cost per expected skill point rather than price per craft. Build a buffer when using yellow or green recipes.
- Buy one batch at a time. The full release client can change the practical cheapest route even when recipe names remain the same.
Blacksmithing Materials Shopping List: Buy in Stages
A single exact shopping-list number is misleading before live server prices and final skill-up behavior are known. Use this as a procurement checklist and build totals from the recipes you actually select. Do not purchase thousands of Thorium Bars simply because an older Classic route suggests doing so.
| Shopping stage | Keep ready | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1–75 | Rough and Coarse Stone; small Copper Bar reserve | Stone crafts carry much of the first 75 points; save Rough Grinding Stones for later keys. |
| 75–150 | Silver and Gold Bars, Bronze Bar, Heavy Stone, Weak Flux, Medium Leather, Iron Bar, Green Dye | Skeleton keys and Bronze weapons bridge to reliable Green Iron Bracers at 140. |
| 150–225 | Iron Bar, Green Dye, Solid Stone, Mithril Bar, Mageweave Cloth, Citrine, Aquamarine (optional) | Iron bracers give way to stones and Mithril armor; Citrine is required for the vendor-plan option. |
| 225–300 | Dense Stone, Mithril Bar, Thick Leather, Truesilver Bar, Star Ruby, Thorium Bar, Rugged Leather, Heart of Fire, Righteous Orb (optional) | Alternative plans use very different inputs. Only buy the rare reagents for a plan you actually own. |
Example calculation: if you plan to make eight Ebon Shivs, multiply the per-craft requirements by eight: 96 Mithril Bars, 48 Truesilver Bars, 16 Star Rubies, 8 Solid Grinding Stones and 16 Thick Leather. If you expect yellow crafts to miss, buy a small buffer. This example is a material calculation, not a promise that eight crafts will grant eight skill points.
What Changed in WoW Forever Blacksmithing?
Forever expands crafting recipes and changes many skill colors, so copying a Classic Era 1–300 list line for line is risky. It also makes professions useful outside an anvil through Camping. The Blacksmithing Sharpening Wheel is an early profession camp feature unlocked at skill 20. Later Blacksmithing camp features and dungeon-connected Blueprints are separate from the basic leveling route. The Sharpening Wheel’s Strength benefit is mutually exclusive with Strength of Earth Totem.
Blizzard also reported making certain Blacksmithing and Leatherworking recipes intended as dungeon random drops available in the beta. That does not make every special plan a trainer recipe or guarantee a Blueprint from a run. For camp feature sizes, shared cooldowns and confirmed sources, use the separate WoW Forever Camping Guide.
Do you need Armorsmithing or Weaponsmithing to reach 300?
No specialization is required for the ordinary 1–300 training route described here. Those specializations matter if you want to create certain profession-specific end products, not merely to increase your basic Blacksmithing skill. A Blacksmithing Leveling order does not automatically grant a specialization or all rare plans either.
Can Blacksmithing help with Legacy progression?
Yes. The WoW Forever Legacy System includes crafting profession milestones at 150, 225 and 300 for eligible professions. That gives you a reason to target an intermediate breakpoint, even when the final Thorium push is too expensive for your first week. The Legacy guide owns the full account-wide point route; here the useful decision is how far to train your Blacksmithing now.
Common Blacksmithing Leveling Problems
Why am I stuck at 75, 150 or 225?
You probably need the next profession rank: Journeyman, Expert or Artisan. Check your character level and find a trainer who actually offers the upgrade. Buying more reagents will not help when your skill cap is full.
Why did a recipe turn green sooner than a Classic guide said?
WoW Forever has its own recipe difficulty ranges. Treat older Classic craft counts as historical comparisons. Open your current profession window: the color shown there is more useful than an outdated shopping list.
Should I make every grinding stone as soon as I unlock it?
No. Stones often provide only a short skill-up window, but some are ingredients in later armor and weapon recipes. Make enough for the next planned step, save them, and only produce more when you have a confirmed use.
Can I level Blacksmithing without Mining?
Yes. You can buy ores, bars, stone and supporting reagents from other players. Mining is a natural gold-saving partner, not a requirement. If you use purchased materials, compare the cost of already-smelted bars with the ore route.
Is there one guaranteed cheapest 225–300 recipe route?
No. The answer depends on the plans you can learn, their current difficulty colors and server prices for Mithril, Truesilver, Thorium and gems. A rare drop recipe may use fewer bars but cost more to acquire than the materials it saves.
Does Blacksmithing 300 unlock every new Forever recipe or camp feature?
No. Skill level is only one requirement. Some plans are learned from trainers, vendors, quests or drops, and higher-tier camp features can involve their own Blueprints. Skill 300 does not grant a full recipe collection.
What to Do Next
If you want to craft your own gear, start gathering Rough Stone and Copper while leveling your character, then decide whether the Mithril and Thorium stages are worth paying for. If you care more about the correct profession choice than its crafting route, compare the PvE, PvP and goldmaking roles in the Profession Tier List. If your goal is purely reaching a skill milestone with less personal farming time, the Blacksmithing Leveling service is the corresponding transactional option.
