To level Cooking from 1 to 300 in WoW Forever, start with cheap fish or starter-zone meat, learn Journeyman at Cooking 50, buy the Expert Cookbook at 125, and unlock Artisan through Clamlette Surprise at 225 skill and character level 35. A fish-first route needs few extra reagents: Brilliant Smallfish, Longjaw Mud Snapper, Bristle Whisker Catfish, Mithril Head Trout, Redgill and Nightfin Snapper will cover most skill brackets. Use a short Raptor Egg stage to bridge 150–175.
Cooking is a secondary profession, so it does not occupy either of your two primary profession slots. In Forever, qualifying cooked meals also grant a Well Fed bonus to experience from kills, and Cooking builds the Basic Campfire that anchors the Camping system. These changes make Cooking useful during leveling, not only for endgame consumables.
This guide follows the current WoW Forever 1.60.1 client records and the published beta-era rank information. The 225–300 route is a recipe-and-material plan, not a claim of completed November 4 release-server testing. Recipe availability, exact material costs and the colors you see in your own profession window take priority over any fixed shopping estimate.
Fast Cooking 1–300 Route: What to Craft
Choose the fish route if you can buy or catch the listed fish. A meat-based replacement for each major bracket appears further below. Reserve ingredients in small batches: once a recipe turns yellow, it can fail to grant a point, so stop crafting at the target skill and top up only if necessary.
| Cooking skill | Main recipe | Suggested starting reserve | Before crafting |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–50 | Brilliant Smallfish | About 55 Raw Brilliant Smallfish | Learn the recipe from a fishing/cooking vendor |
| 50–100 | Longjaw Mud Snapper | About 55 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper | Train Journeyman at skill 50; obtain vendor recipe |
| 100–150 | Bristle Whisker Catfish | About 55 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish | Buy the Expert Cookbook at 125, before hitting 150 |
| 150–175 | Curiously Tasty Omelet | About 30 Raptor Eggs and 30 Hot Spices | Requires the vendor/quest recipe and Cooking 130 |
| 175–225 | Mithril Headed Trout | About 55 Raw Mithril Head Trout | Requires Expert Cooking and vendor recipe |
| 225–265 | Filet of Redgill | About 50 Raw Redgill | First complete the Artisan Cooking quest |
| 265–300 | Nightfin Soup | About 40 Raw Nightfin Snapper and 40 Refreshing Spring Water | Learn the recipe sold by Gikkix; check real skill-up color |
These quantities are a segmented planning basket, not guaranteed craft counts. The early and late orange-to-yellow transitions make real demand variable; Cooking 1 starts at one skill point, not zero. If some fish are expensive or a vendor has not stocked the recipe, follow the alternative row for that same bracket rather than forcing an inefficient green craft.
Fish, Farm or Buy Materials?
Fishing and Cooking are a natural pair because much of the route uses one raw fish per craft. Fishing yourself saves Auction House gold but costs time and requires skill-appropriate waters. Buying raw fish is faster if the supply exists; on a fresh realm, meat and eggs collected during normal questing can be cheaper. The right path depends on your bags, travel, recipe availability and market prices.
A paid Cooking leveling service is a separate time-saving option when you would rather play your character than visit vendors and craft hundreds of meals. The service is not a substitute for learning every rare recipe or obtaining dungeon Blueprints. Before choosing, compare the effort of gathering against the current/target skill you actually need.
Cooking 1–300: Follow the Recipe Route or Save Time?
Once you know the materials and trainer gates, choose whether to fish, farm and cook everything yourself or use a skill-leveling service. The route below remains available for a full DIY plan.
Cooking Trainers, Expert Cookbook and Artisan Quest
Training the next rank raises the maximum skill you can reach; it does not automatically teach every individual recipe. Most cooking-food recipes beyond the opening few come from vendors, quest rewards or drops. Train the next rank before you reach the current cap.
| Cooking rank | When it becomes relevant | New skill cap | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | Start Cooking | 75 | Any starter-zone or capital Cooking trainer |
| Journeyman | From Cooking 50 | 150 | Return to a Cooking trainer before you reach 75 |
| Expert | From Cooking 125 | 225 | Expert Cookbook from Shandrina (Ashenvale, Alliance) or Wulan (Shadowprey Village, Desolace, Horde) |
| Artisan | Cooking 225 and character level 35 | 300 | Clamlette Surprise from Dirge Quikcleave in Gadgetzan, Tanaris |
Practical capital trainers include Stephen Ryback in Stormwind, Daryl Riknussun in Ironforge and Alegorn in Darnassus for Alliance; Zamja in Orgrimmar, Eunice Burch in Undercity and Aska Mistrunner in Thunder Bluff for Horde. Starter-area cooks include Tomas (Goldshire), Gremlock Pilsnor (Kharanos), Zarrin (Dolanaar), Cook Torka (Razor Hill), William Pickman (Brill) and Pyall Silentstride (Bloodhoof Village). For Skyborne, the Forever database lists Nyalah Brightfire in Valanaar and Zerril Softbreeze in Shen’dar Village.
Do not leave for Tanaris expecting a normal Artisan trainer menu. The 225–300 cap is tied to a quest. Likewise, owning a 175-skill fish recipe does not bypass the Expert Cookbook at 125. If your Cooking stays stuck at 75, 150 or 225, check your profession rank first, not your ingredient count.
Artisan Cooking: Clamlette Surprise Requirements
At character level 35 and Cooking skill 225, talk to Dirge Quikcleave in Gadgetzan, Tanaris. Prepare the following quest turn-in materials before traveling. These are not included in the ordinary cooking-ingredient basket shown later.
| Quest material | Amount | Practical source |
|---|---|---|
| Giant Egg | 12 | Roc-family birds; check Tanaris drops or the Auction House |
| Zesty Clam Meat | 10 | Open Big-mouth Clams; coastal turtles are a potential source |
| Alterac Swiss | 20 | Food vendors and some innkeepers; vendor inventory can differ |
Finish Clamlette Surprise to learn Artisan Cooking and raise the cap to 300. Alliance players may encounter the introductory I Know A Guy… prompt in Ironforge; Horde players may see To Gadgetzan You Go! in Orgrimmar. The decisive step is the Gadgetzan quest itself. The 225–300 crafting plan below depends on this rank being available in the launch client.
Important ingredient rule: save the 12 Giant Eggs for your Artisan turn-in before you make extra Monster Omelets. That food is an alternative skill-up recipe, but spending the quest eggs first forces another farming trip.
Cooking 1–75: Starter Fish and Meat
Choose one ingredient your starting zone actually supplies. The fish-first row is Brilliant Smallfish (1 Raw Brilliant Smallfish per craft), learned through a purchased recipe. For an all-meat start, use Charred Wolf Meat from Stringy Wolf Meat or Roasted Boar Meat from Chunk of Boar Meat. These starter recipes avoid rare reagents.
If fish are unavailable, do not wait until level 20 to start Cooking. Kill wolves or boars as part of normal questing, keep their meat, and craft near an inn or your own fire. In early Night Elf zones, Small Eggs and Kaldorei Spider Kabob can replace unavailable wolf or boar drops, but that recipe has a quest source.
Continue through the opening 40–50 points, then buy the next recipe based on what is cheapest. Train Journeyman at 50, even though your current cap is 75. Continuing to mass-craft after 75 without this rank wastes materials.
Cooking 75–150: Mud Snapper, Catfish and Meat Alternatives
For 50–100, use Longjaw Mud Snapper (one Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper each). A purchased recipe is needed. Alliance can look for Tharynn Bouden in Goldshire; Horde players can check Naal Mistrunner in Thunder Bluff. If your fishing bags contain Rainbow Fin Albacore instead, its recipe also starts at Cooking 50.
At Cooking 100, switch to Bristle Whisker Catfish. The recipe is sold by vendors including Catherine Leland (Stormwind) and Naal Mistrunner (Thunder Bluff). This range is also useful to stock edible fish for later leveling instead of repeatedly cooking low-skill gray recipes.
Not fishing? Use Coyote Steak or Smoked Bear Meat near the earlier part of the bracket; Crab Cake and Dry Pork Ribs are more useful as meat drops and your skill rise. Check each recipe’s learn skill and color rather than following a fixed Classic-era zone list. Keep an eye on vendor-only recipe sources: the Cooking trainer does not sell all these food plans.
At Cooking 125, obtain Expert Cookbook. Shandrina in Ashenvale (Alliance) and Wulan in Desolace (Horde) are the documented sellers. The item is tradable, so the Auction House can spare a faction-specific trip when it is stocked. Expert raises your maximum from 150 to 225.
Cooking 150–225: Eggs, Trout and Spider Sausage
The transition from 150 to 175 is the one weak spot in a fish-only plan. Curiously Tasty Omelet is a simple workaround at one Raptor Egg and one Hot Spices per craft, learned from a recipe available through a vendor or quest. Its current Forever difficulty values start at Cooking 130 and turn yellow at 170. Around 30 attempts is a useful initial reserve for the 25-point bridge; buy more only if needed.
From 175, use Mithril Headed Trout. The craft consumes one Raw Mithril Head Trout and creates the food named Mithril Head Trout. The recipe is sold by fishing vendors such as Tansy Puddlefizz (Ironforge) and Shankys (Orgrimmar). The names are easy to confuse when searching the Auction House: buy the raw fish to level and the recipe item to learn it.
If the trout price is poor, split the bracket between Roast Raptor (Raptor Flesh plus Hot Spices) and Spider Sausage (two White Spider Meat). Both are Classic-origin dishes in the Forever recipe database, but the relevant source, reagents and difficulty should still be checked against the current Forever tooltip. Spider Sausage begins at Cooking 200; it is not a substitute for the entire 175–225 interval.
At 225, you have reached the Expert cap. Continue to the Gadgetzan Artisan quest before spending the next large stack of ingredients. Do not rely on a beta Level 30 character to validate the Artisan section: the quest requires character level 35.
Cooking 225–300: Redgill and Nightfin Soup
This is a data-backed launch plan, not a completed in-game leveling record. After unlocking Artisan, Filet of Redgill starts at Cooking 225. One Raw Redgill makes the dish, and the classic vendor source is Kelsey Yance in Booty Bay. The recipe is orange until 265, then yellow and green until it becomes gray at 305. A starter stack of approximately 50 fish covers the first 40 planned points with some spare pieces.
At around 265, Nightfin Soup is the preferred late recipe in this plan. It uses one Raw Nightfin Snapper and one Refreshing Spring Water. The recorded vendor is Gikkix in Tanaris. Its database difficulty ranges are 250 / 290 / 310 / 330, so you still have an orange window until 290 and a yellow window for the last ten points. Carry additional fish rather than assuming 35 crafts always produce 35 skill points.
If you find Raw Sunscale Salmon cheaper than Nightfin Snapper, Poached Sunscale Salmon is a comparable 250-skill alternative; it uses one fish and no purchased cooking spice. Meat-heavy options such as Monster Omelet (Giant Egg plus two Soothing Spices) may work earlier in the Artisan range. Check the actual learning requirement and vendor recipe in your client before bulk purchases.
Never treat one fixed 225–300 basket as mandatory. Neither rare recipe availability nor first-week fish prices were proven by a completed Level 60 release-server run before November 4, 2026. If the listed vendor recipe is missing, compare same-bracket plans rather than buying a large stack for a craft you cannot learn.
Cooking 1–300 Shopping List: Main Fish Route
This consolidated list is only for the seven-step main route, with a modest starter reserve for yellow crafts. It does not include the different reagents for alternative recipes, and the Artisan quest is intentionally separated so your turn-in materials remain untouched.
| Material to gather or buy | Initial amount | Used in |
|---|---|---|
| Raw Brilliant Smallfish | ~55 | Cooking 1–50 |
| Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper | ~55 | Cooking 50–100 |
| Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish | ~55 | Cooking 100–150 |
| Raptor Egg | ~30 | Cooking 150–175 Curiously Tasty Omelet |
| Hot Spices | ~30 | Cooking 150–175 Curiously Tasty Omelet; purchased from cooking suppliers |
| Raw Mithril Head Trout | ~55 | Cooking 175–225 |
| Raw Redgill | ~50 | Cooking 225–265, Artisan only |
| Raw Nightfin Snapper | ~40 | Cooking 265–300, Artisan only |
| Refreshing Spring Water | ~40 | Cooking 265–300 Nightfin Soup; vendor supply |
Optional extras: one Flint and Tinder tool, a small stack of Simple Wood if you intend to craft Basic Campfire kits, the individual recipe items you have not yet learned, and the Expert Cookbook. For the Artisan quest add 12 Giant Eggs, 10 Zesty Clam Meat and 20 Alterac Swiss in a separate bag column. Do not count those eggs as Raptor Eggs for the 150–175 recipe.
If you already have the skill partly trained, subtract the rows you have passed. If a recipe turns green before you reach its target, switch early. Do not buy the entire 1–300 basket on a new realm based on an assumed guaranteed skill-up rate or a hypothetical Auction House price.
Recipes for Players Without Fishing
A full fish-only route is convenient, not required. Many players level Cooking while questing and prefer to use the meat, eggs and clams already in their bags. The table is a replacement menu, not extra shopping items to add to the main basket.
| Skill band | Possible substitute | Reagents per craft | Best use / caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–50 | Charred Wolf Meat or Roasted Boar Meat | 1 Stringy Wolf Meat or 1 Chunk of Boar Meat | Start with nearby quest mobs; do not assume Charred Wolf Meat grants Well Fed XP |
| 50–100 | Coyote Steak; Smoked Bear Meat; Rainbow Fin Albacore | Coyote Meat; Bear Meat; Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore | Choose according to actual stock and recipe color |
| 100–150 | Crab Cake or Dry Pork Ribs | Crawler Meat + Mild Spices; Boar Ribs + Mild Spices | Check skill-color cutoffs; one recipe may go green sooner |
| 150–175 | Curiously Tasty Omelet or Lean Wolf Steak | Raptor Egg + Hot Spices; Lean Wolf Flank + Mild Spices | A planned bridge when low-tier fish have turned green |
| 175–200 | Roast Raptor or Goblin Deviled Clams | Raptor Flesh + Hot Spices; Tangy Clam Meat + Hot Spices | Start recipes only after obtaining the vendor recipe or training |
| 200–225 | Spider Sausage | 2 White Spider Meat | Requires Cooking 200; keep enough for the planned points |
| 225–265 | Monster Omelet or Filet of Redgill | Giant Egg + 2 Soothing Spices; Raw Redgill | Keep the 12 Artisan quest eggs separate; verify pattern |
| 265–300 | Poached Sunscale Salmon or Nightfin Soup | Raw Sunscale Salmon; Raw Nightfin Snapper + Spring Water | Late recipe items and ingredients must both be available |
For a fresh character in a starter zone with poor fish access, meat can win even if the mathematical fish route uses fewer material types. Conversely, for a high-level alt with gold but little free time, buying raw fish and cooking by bracket may be faster than farming gray mobs for outdated meat.
Where to Buy Key Cooking Recipes
Many recipes are not taught by the Cooking trainer. Buying the right recipe item before the ingredients prevents costly detours. These are documented vendor or quest leads; check the actual vendor inventory on your ruleset when you arrive.
| Recipe or unlock | Useful source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Brilliant Smallfish | Catherine Leland (Stormwind), Sewa Mistrunner (Thunder Bluff) | Learn at Cooking 1; one raw fish per craft |
| Longjaw Mud Snapper | Tharynn Bouden (Goldshire), Naal Mistrunner (Thunder Bluff) | Learn at 50; can replace with Rainbow Fin Albacore |
| Bristle Whisker Catfish | Catherine Leland (Stormwind), Naal Mistrunner (Thunder Bluff) | Learn at 100; useful until roughly 150 |
| Curiously Tasty Omelet | Quest or faction vendor recipe | Learn at 130; do not assume the normal Cooking trainer sells it |
| Mithril Headed Trout | Tansy Puddlefizz (Ironforge), Shankys (Orgrimmar) | Learn at 175; recipe name differs from cooked item name |
| Filet of Redgill | Kelsey Yance (Booty Bay) | Artisan 225–265; current vendor stock not independently tested |
| Nightfin Soup | Gikkix (Tanaris) | Learn at 250; also a useful spell-damage food choice |
| Expert Cookbook | Shandrina (Ashenvale), Wulan (Desolace) | Use at Cooking 125 to raise cap to 225 |
What Cooking Changes in WoW Forever
Food is not just ordinary out-of-combat healing. Many recorded Forever meals now provide an improved Well Fed buff after eating for around ten seconds: a stat benefit for fifteen minutes and 5% additional experience gained from eligible kills. This bonus does not mean 5% more XP from quest turn-ins. Do not assume every legacy starter recipe has the buff unless its current tooltip shows it.
| Food | Cooking skill | Recorded Forever use |
|---|---|---|
| Brilliant Smallfish | 1 | Early Attack Power food and Well Fed kill XP |
| Longjaw Mud Snapper | 50 | Attack Power food for early-level characters |
| Curiously Tasty Omelet | 130 | Stamina food with Well Fed kill XP |
| Mithril Headed Trout | 175 | Attack Power food suitable for a mid-level route |
| Nightfin Soup | 250 | Spell Damage food in the Forever tooltip |
| Poached Sunscale Salmon | 250 | Physical Attack Power food in the Forever tooltip |
If you are leveling a caster, the best meal for your current level may differ from the best recipe for gaining Cooking skill. Compare your character-level requirement and your Cooking skill requirement separately. A food requiring level 35 can still be crafted later for Cooking gains, even if it is not useful to the character doing the early leveling.
Cooking also produces Basic Campfire at skill 1. The documented recipe uses one Simple Wood with Flint and Tinder as a reusable tool. Placing the kit creates a campsite with room for three additional profession objects; larger campfire kits can support five or ten. A campfire is not itself a free stack of every class buff: other players must contribute the objects, and the full bonus requires staying at the active camp. For exact slots, buffs and Blueprint locations, use the WoW Forever Camping Guide.
Higher Cooking skills may also help with Cooking-related camp recipes such as Cookie’s Feast and the Iron Oven. Those are separate unlocks from the ordinary food route and do not justify promising every high-end recipe will be available immediately at skill 300.
Common Cooking Mistakes and How to Fix Them
| Problem | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No skill points at 75, 150 or 225 | Next profession rank not learned | Train Journeyman, use Expert Cookbook or complete Artisan quest before crafting more |
| Recipe still appears unavailable after learning a rank | Recipe item must be bought or unlocked independently | Check the exact recipe name, faction vendor, quest and skill requirement |
| Yellow recipe uses too many materials | Skill-up chance decreases | Buy small batches; switch to a new orange recipe if its inputs are cheaper |
| You bought cooked fish instead of raw fish | Auction House uses both spell output and input names | Search for Raw Brilliant Smallfish, Raw Redgill, Raw Nightfin Snapper and other raw materials |
| No 225–300 unlock on a lower-level character | Artisan quest requires character level 35 and Cooking 225 | Level your character first; do not confuse profession points with character level |
| No 5% bonus XP from a specific food | The tooltip may not carry the qualifying Well Fed effect | Read the current cooked-food tooltip; kill XP and quest XP are different |
| Cannot place a cooking fire or receive camp benefits | Missing kit/tool, location rules or contributed features | Craft a Basic Campfire Kit, find a valid outdoor area and review the Camping Guide |
Cooking 1–300 Questions Players Ask
Is Cooking a primary profession in WoW Forever?
No. Cooking is a secondary profession. You can learn it alongside First Aid and Fishing without giving up either of your two primary profession slots.
Do I have to level Fishing to reach Cooking 300?
No. Fishing provides convenient fish for many recipes, but meat, eggs and clams can replace large parts of the route. Buying raw fish is another option when you already have gold.
Why am I stuck at Cooking 150?
The next cap requires Expert Cooking. Use the Expert Cookbook at Cooking 125; it is sold by Shandrina in Ashenvale for Alliance or Wulan in Desolace for Horde. A Cooking trainer alone does not provide this rank.
How do I unlock Artisan Cooking in Forever?
At character level 35 and Cooking 225, complete Clamlette Surprise for Dirge Quikcleave in Gadgetzan. Prepare 12 Giant Eggs, 10 Zesty Clam Meat and 20 Alterac Swiss before the trip.
What is the fastest 1–300 route?
A fish-heavy path is easy to plan because most crafts need one raw fish, but it is only fast if the raw ingredients and vendor recipe items are available. On a new realm, gathering meat while questing can save more travel or gold.
Are the material quantities guaranteed?
No. Yellow recipes do not always provide a skill point and green recipes are less reliable. The shopping list is a bracket-by-bracket starting reserve; stop when you reach the target and buy extras only where necessary.
Does Well Fed give 5% more experience from all sources?
No. The documented Forever bonus increases eligible experience from kills, not every quest hand-in or all experience sources. Check the current food tooltip for eligibility and duration.
Can I use a Basic Campfire without any primary profession?
Yes. Cooking is secondary and allows you to craft a Basic Campfire Kit using the documented ingredients. Other nearby players can contribute their own profession objects to the camp.
Do I need special dungeon Blueprints to level Cooking to 300?
No special Cooking camp Blueprint is part of the seven-step food recipe plan. That is different from unlocking advanced camp objects or the Iron Oven, which may have their own recipe sources.
For the broader picture, compare professions for PvE, PvP and goldmaking, see how Camping works in Forever, or follow the leveling 1–60 route with food already prepared. The practical next step is simple: check your current Cooking skill, learn the next rank before the cap, buy only the recipes you can actually use, and craft the cheapest available ingredients in that range.
