To level Mining from 1 to 300 in WoW Forever, gather Copper to 65, Tin and Silver to 125, Iron to 175, Mithril to 245, then Small and Rich Thorium to 300. Keep a Mining Pick in your bags and Find Minerals active. Train Journeyman at Mining 50, Expert at 125, and Artisan at 200 so you do not run into a skill cap.
The fastest route is usually a mix of vein gathering and early smelting. Smelting can grant skill through 185 with the correct recipes and materials, but the 140–155 stretch requires real mining; after 185, ordinary smelting is not a leveling shortcut. A vein can give at most one Mining skill point even if it takes several interactions to empty.
Release context: WoW Forever is scheduled to open on November 4, 2026, with character progression toward Level 60 and profession skill 300. The node requirements below come from Forever profession records; suggested circuits use known zone spawns, not a promise of unchanged November 4 respawn locations or guaranteed points per vein. The 225–300 travel route remains a planned Level 60 route rather than a completed release-server speedrun.
WoW Forever Mining 1–300 Quick Route
Use the table to pick the next circuit, not to force yourself to stay until every vein turns grey. On a crowded realm, switch to a nearby fallback that contains the same ore tier instead of waiting at one depleted node.
| Mining skill | Veins to target | Primary circuit | Good fallback / when to move |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–65 | Copper Vein (1) | Elwynn Forest → Westfall (Alliance); Durotar → The Barrens (Horde) | Loch Modan, Dun Morogh, Tirisfal Glades or Zephras Isle; leave when Copper becomes slow |
| 65–125 | Tin Vein (65); Silver Vein (75) | Wetlands / Redridge (Alliance); The Barrens → Stonetalon (Horde) | Silverpine Forest, Ashenvale or Duskwood; use Bronze smelting if it is cheaper than detours |
| 125–175 | Iron Deposit (125); Gold Vein (155) | Arathi Highlands or Stranglethorn Vale | Desolace or Thousand Needles; do not plan your route around rare Gold |
| 175–230 | Mithril Deposit (175) | Badlands → Searing Gorge or Tanaris | The Hinterlands or Azshara; train Artisan at Mining 200 if eligible |
| 230–245 | Mithril Deposit; Truesilver Deposit (230) | The Hinterlands / Tanaris | Badlands; Truesilver is optional, not a reliable main route |
| 245–275 | Small Thorium Vein (245) | Un’Goro Crater or Winterspring | Felwood, Burning Steppes or Silithus; remain on Small Thorium until 275 |
| 275–300 | Rich Thorium Vein (275); Small Thorium Vein | Winterspring or Eastern Plaguelands | Azshara, Burning Steppes or Un’Goro; keep Small Thorium as a backup |
Node requirement is not a guaranteed skill-up. When the node tooltip is yellow or green, you may need several veins for one point. The route progresses through minimum skill requirements rather than claiming a fixed number of ore stacks or farming hours.
Choose Your Mining Leveling Method
| Your priority | Best practical option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You want Mining skill with no ore purchases | Follow the gathering circuits and mine every eligible vein | Travel and respawn competition take time; save what you mine for crafting or sale. |
| You want faster early progress without travel | Smelt suitable Copper, Bronze, Silver, Iron or Gold at a forge while their recipe still awards skill | You need ore or bars, and you must return to veins from 140–155 and beyond 185. |
| You want to spend your playtime on quests or dungeons | Compare a profession-leveling service for your chosen current and target skill | This is a paid route; it does not unlock every rare Mining Blueprint or promise a certain ore quantity. |
If you enjoy gathering, the seven-stage circuit above is enough to play the whole route yourself. If your problem is the time required to travel between veins, choose between a paid skill-leveling option and continuing with the DIY circuit before committing gold or playtime.
Mining 1–300: Gather It Yourself or Save Time?
Once you know which veins and trainers you need, choose a self-run route, a managed Mining skill target, or the matching crafting profession.
Prepare Before Your First Ore Vein
- Learn Mining: start with an Apprentice Mining trainer or a valid starting-zone Mining reward. Mining occupies one of your two primary profession slots.
- Carry a Mining Pick: buy one from a Trade Goods vendor and keep it in your inventory. Your character may carry a weapon separately; a pick is a tool, not your combat rotation.
- Activate Find Minerals: check your tracking menu after changing zones or switching between Mining and Herbalism.
- Empty some bags: veins can yield ore, stone, gems and occasional Forever Scarce materials. Valuable stone may be needed for Engineering or Blacksmithing.
- Plan four training ranks: return to a full trainer before the 75, 150 and 225 caps stop you from gaining points.
Mining Trainers and Rank Caps
| Profession rank | Train from Mining skill | Rank cap | Character requirement / note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | At profession start | 75 | Starting-area Apprentice trainer or a regular city Mining trainer |
| Journeyman | 50 | 150 | Character Level 10 is the Classic and prelaunch guide requirement |
| Expert | 125 | 225 | Character Level 20 is the Classic and prelaunch guide requirement |
| Artisan | 200 | 300 | Character Level 35 is the expected rank gate; plan this for the Level 60 release |
A new rank raises your maximum skill; it does not award free points. Train Journeyman before you hit 75, Expert before 150 and Artisan before 225. An Apprentice-only trainer in a starter zone cannot be assumed to teach all later ranks.
| Faction | Practical trainer | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Alliance | Gelman Stonehand | Dwarven District, Stormwind City (/way 59.0 37.6) |
| Alliance | Geofram Bouldertoe | Great Forge, Ironforge (/way 50.4 26.0) |
| Horde | Makaru | Valley of Honor, Orgrimmar (/way 73.0 26.4) |
| Horde | Brek Stonehoof | Thunder Bluff (/way 34.6 57.6) |
| Horde | Brom Killian | War Quarter, Undercity (/way 56.0 37.0) |
| Neutral | Pikkle | Gadgetzan, Tanaris (/way 51.0 28.0) |
| Neutral | Grungle | Powderfuse Port, Riverglades (/way 77.6 51.8) |
Other trainers are available in regular settlements and new Forever starting areas. If you are already near a town, check its Mining trainer before taking a long trip to a capital.
Mining 1–65: Copper in the Starting Zones
Begin with Copper Vein at skill 1. Elwynn Forest and Westfall work for Alliance players; Durotar and The Barrens work for Horde. Dun Morogh, Loch Modan, Tirisfal Glades, Mulgore and Zephras Isle offer alternatives. Follow rock walls, hills, quarry edges and cave entrances rather than crossing wide fields with few spawn points.
At Mining 20, the Forever Lodestone camp feature becomes relevant. It is a different reason to learn Mining from simply earning ore: you can contribute a melee-support feature at a campfire. The full campsite rules are in the WoW Forever Camping Guide.
Your main objective is to reach skill 65 and unlock Tin. You can also smelt Copper near a forge while its recipe still gives skill, especially if you already mined a large stack. Do not buy expensive ore to smelt if the nearest Copper circuit is safe and uncontested.
Mining 65–125: Tin, Silver and Early Bronze
Tin Veins unlock at 65 Mining; Silver Veins at 75. On Alliance, choose the Wetlands or Redridge Mountains first and fall back to Duskwood or Loch Modan. Horde players can circle The Barrens, Stonetalon Mountains or Ashenvale. Silver shares suitable terrain with Tin but is less predictable: treat it as a bonus, not a requirement to progress.
Smelting is useful here. Tin processing and Bronze making can raise early Mining skill while the recipes are not grey. Bronze takes one Copper Bar and one Tin Bar per smelt and produces Bronze Bars. Save bars for Engineering 1–300 or Blacksmithing 1–300 when that is your second profession.
If Tin becomes low value for skill, start an Iron circuit as soon as you have Mining 125 rather than waiting for a final green point.
Mining 125–175: Iron Deposits and Occasional Gold
Iron Deposit requires Mining 125. Arathi Highlands has several suitable mountain and ridge routes; Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Thousand Needles are sensible alternatives. Gold Veins can be mined at 155, but they are rarer than Iron, so a route that waits only for Gold will usually waste travel time.
Watch the 140–155 gap: common ore smelting recipes cannot carry you through those Mining points. Use actual veins in the relevant zone. At 155, Smelt Gold becomes a possible skill option through 185 if the ore is affordable; the ore may be worth more as a sale item on a fresh realm.
For a leveling character, combine an Iron circuit with normal quest objectives and reasonable travel. A shorter, repeatable lap around the rocks is more useful than crossing an entire high-danger zone for one node.
Mining 175–245: Mithril, Then Truesilver
Mining 175–230: Start with Mithril
Mithril Deposit opens at 175. Try the Badlands, Tanaris or the Hinterlands; Searing Gorge and Azshara also have relevant ore routes. Stay close to rock faces and cave systems and clear mobs only where you can safely reach and mine the deposit.
You should train Artisan at Mining 200 once the character-level requirement is met, before skill 225 becomes a hard cap. Do not assume that learning Smelt Mithril means it will keep raising Mining; its smelting recipe is grey for skill progression in the current Forever data.
Mining 230–245: Truesilver Is a Bonus
Truesilver Deposits require skill 230. They can be useful on Mithril circuits, but rare spawns make them an unreliable sole source of points. Stay in the Hinterlands, Tanaris, Badlands or a comparable Mithril zone until you reach 245; then you can switch to Small Thorium.
Dark Iron Deposits also show a 230 skill requirement, but they are not a practical universal 230–245 route: the zones and dungeon access are restrictive, and specialized Dark Iron smelting is a different activity from gaining Mining skill.
Mining 245–300: Thorium Circuits for Artisan
Mining 245–275: Small Thorium Veins
Small Thorium Veins require Mining 245. Start with Un’Goro Crater or Winterspring. Felwood, Burning Steppes, Silithus, the Plaguelands and some rocky areas of Tanaris are alternatives where suitable veins are present. Follow the outer ridges and mountain bases instead of repeatedly circling one contested cave.
Ordinary Smelt Thorium does not replace these gathering points: its recipe is grey for Mining skill progression in current Forever records. It is still useful to turn ore into bars when you need crafting materials.
Mining 275–300: Rich Thorium + Small Thorium
At 275 Mining, Rich Thorium Veins become available. Winterspring, Eastern Plaguelands, Burning Steppes, Un’Goro Crater and Azshara are useful high-level choices. Rich veins are not guaranteed at every spawn. Keep gathering Small Thorium when the route does not provide enough Rich Thorium or when the richer location is occupied.
This last stretch can be slower than the earlier brackets because yellow and green nodes can fail to increase the skill, while travel and enemy levels are higher. A safe multi-node lap beats repeatedly entering dangerous locations to force one Rich Thorium spawn. Exact November 4 route yield is not yet established.
Every Main Mining Vein and Its Skill Requirement
| Ore vein | Minimum Mining skill | Main use in this guide |
|---|---|---|
| Copper Vein | 1 | Starting route and Copper Ore |
| Tin Vein | 65 | Early profession supplies and Bronze |
| Silver Vein | 75 | Optional early bonus |
| Iron Deposit | 125 | Midgame skill and Iron Ore |
| Gold Vein | 155 | Optional find; smelting may help 155–185 |
| Mithril Deposit | 175 | Primary 175–245 route |
| Truesilver Deposit | 230 | Optional high-level vein |
| Dark Iron Deposit | 230 | Specialized alternative with location limits |
| Small Thorium Vein | 245 | Primary 245–275 route |
| Rich Thorium Vein | 275 | Primary 275–300 route |
These are minimum interaction requirements, not the skill where a vein turns grey. Mining bonuses from gear or enchants can temporarily bridge a gap, but they do not train a new profession rank or make an inaccessible zone safe.
Smelting 1–185: When Does It Actually Grant Mining Skill?
Smelting is a useful shortcut only when the recipe has a chance to grant points. The current Forever recipe records give the following grey thresholds; once a recipe is grey, continuing to smelt only makes bars. Your profession window remains the practical check for orange, yellow and green skill-up chance.
| Smelt recipe | Starts / unlock | Grey by Mining skill | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smelt Copper | 1 | 70 | Useful for early levels; Copper Ore is common |
| Smelt Tin | 65 | 75 | Short early window; use Tin veins for the route |
| Smelt Bronze | 65 | 115 | Uses one Copper Bar and one Tin Bar; useful after Tin goes grey |
| Smelt Silver | 75 | 125 | Possible shortcut if rare Silver Ore is affordable |
| Smelt Iron | 125 | 140 | Short bridge before the forced gathering stretch |
| Smelt Gold | 155 | 185 | Can give late early skill points but is expensive on some realms |
| Smelt Mithril / Smelt Thorium | Known later | Grey from learnable rank | Turn ore into bars for crafting; do not expect Mining skill-ups |
Practical decision: if you have spare ore, try a few smelts while they still grant skill. If you must buy ore at Auction House prices, compare the expense with the time to mine nearby veins. You must gather nodes from 140 to 155, and after 185 ordinary smelting will not take you to 300. Do not buy a fixed ore shopping basket expecting every smelt to award one point.
What Mining Adds in Forever: Camp Features and New Materials
Mining has uses beyond selling Copper and Thorium. Blizzard confirms that Mining belongs to the Camping system and that early profession campsite items begin at skill 20. Advanced Blueprints and materials have separate requirements from leveling the gathering skill.
| Forever feature | Skill / source | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Lodestone | 20; initial profession feature / trainer route | A melee Attack Power campsite buff that overlaps Blessing of Might. It is not the unverified personal Mining health passive. |
| Rock Garden | 140; special Blueprint from content such as Wetlands Relic Guardian | Can provide a mining node at a campsite over time; not a substitute for the full 1–300 route. |
| Smelt Azerothium | 275; Mining trainer in current data | A Forever bar recipe used by advanced crafting; not an alternative path to 300 Mining skill. |
| Molten Foundry | 300; advanced Blueprint | An upgraded Mining campsite crafting station for later recipes. |
| Smelt Heavy Thorium | 300; trainer in current data | Advanced bar craft associated with the Molten Foundry rather than a 245–300 skill shortcut. |
Mining may also produce Scarce byproducts such as Pyrite, Bauxite and Pitchblende. The exact extra-drop rates and the value of those materials depend on release conditions. Follow the Gold Farming Guide for the wider economy and the Camping Guide for camp slots, cooldowns and competing class buffs.
Mining Materials: Keep, Smelt or Sell?
- Keep ore for your own craft: Copper, Tin, Iron, Mithril and Thorium supply Blacksmithing and Engineering. If you are following a specific craft guide, check whether it wants ore, bars or stone before processing the stack.
- Keep stone until you have a plan: Rough, Coarse, Heavy, Solid and Dense Stone have crafting uses. Vendoring them automatically may create a later materials shortage.
- Compare ore and bars: smelting is convenient, but a raw ore can sell for more than its bars. Do not assume the processed item is always more valuable.
- Track rare gems and Scarce drops separately: one lucky gather can distort your impression of what an ordinary lap earns. Do not project one Arcane Crystal or Pitchblende find into a fixed hourly income.
- Choose your second profession for your goal: Mining + Blacksmithing supplies self-crafted gear; Mining + Engineering supplies gadgets and explosives; Mining + Herbalism favors gathering but requires changing minimap tracking.
Common Mining Problems and Fast Fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Mining stops at 75, 150 or 225 | Profession rank has not been upgraded | Train Journeyman, Expert or Artisan once eligible; skill threshold and character level both matter. |
| A vein says you need more Mining | Node has a higher requirement than your current skill | Target the previous ore tier; use a real Mining bonus only when available and correctly equipped. |
| Find Minerals shows nothing | Tracking inactive, or available nodes are far away / depleted | Reactivate tracking; check rocky terrain and switch to another circuit. |
| I mined several times but gained no skill | Vein gives at most one skill point and may be yellow/green | Finish the node for materials, then choose a more appropriate ore tier for skill. |
| Smelting stopped increasing Mining | Recipe is grey or you passed the ordinary smelting cap | Use actual veins; especially 140–155 and after 185. |
| Thorium route takes too long | Contested spawn points or a mismatched ore requirement | Use Small Thorium from 245, Rich Thorium from 275, and rotate zones as needed. |
WoW Forever Mining FAQ
Where is the best place to level Mining from 1 to 300?
No single zone covers all skill brackets. Start with Copper in starter regions, move to Tin in the Wetlands or Barrens, Iron in Arathi or Desolace, Mithril in the Badlands or Hinterlands, and Thorium in Un’Goro, Winterspring or the Plaguelands. Switch circuits if a realm is crowded.
Can I level Mining from 1 to 300 only by smelting?
No. In current Forever data, ordinary smelting can contribute points only through Mining 185, with a mandatory gathering gap between 140 and 155. You must mine veins for the rest of the route.
What Mining skill is required for Small and Rich Thorium?
245 for Small Thorium and 275 for Rich Thorium. Keep mining Small Thorium after 275 if Rich Thorium spawns are contested.
Does each hit on a vein give another Mining skill point?
No. A vein may be mined several times, but it can award a maximum of one Mining skill point. A yellow or green vein may give none at all.
Where can I train Artisan Mining?
Current guides list full-rank trainers such as Gelman Stonehand in Stormwind, Geofram Bouldertoe in Ironforge, Makaru in Orgrimmar, Brek Stonehoof in Thunder Bluff and Pikkle in Gadgetzan. The expected Artisan training gate is Mining 200 plus character Level 35.
Is Mining better paired with Blacksmithing or Engineering?
Pick Blacksmithing if you want metal equipment and weapon crafts, or Engineering if you want devices and combat utilities. Both consume ore, bars and stone. If your aim is mostly gathering income, another gathering profession may fit better.
Does Mining automatically give 5% more maximum health?
A Mining personal-health bonus has been reported in beta-era comparisons, but its final release effect is not yet confirmed by an authoritative launch-client test. The confirmed Lodestone camp effect is separate from that reported personal bonus. Choose Mining for its ore route and proven gathering role rather than relying on an unverified percentage.
Mining Route Sources and Data Limits
This route uses the Wowhead Forever Mining Profession Overview for skill requirements, trainer locations, smelting colors and the stated one-point-per-vein limit. The official Blizzard Camping overview explains the profession camp system and early feature access. Zone recommendations use known beta-era and Classic-based node locations, so live node spawns and competition may differ when the November 4 release opens.
The main decision remains simple: mine the next accessible vein tier, train before each profession cap, and use smelting only while it can raise skill. Once your route reaches 245 and 275, the two Thorium tiers provide the remaining steps toward Mining 300.
