Shadow Priest in WoW Forever is a ranged DPS spec built around Shadow Word: Pain, Devouring Plague, Mind Blast, Mind Flay, and Shadow Word: Death. Early leveling still relies heavily on Spirit Tap and wand damage, while deeper Shadow talents shift the spec toward sustained spellcasting.
Forever changes several important parts of Classic Shadow Priest. Shadowform cuts Shadow spell Mana costs by 50%, Shadow Weaving becomes a personal damage increase, and every Priest race gains access to Devouring Plague. This guide covers leveling, level-60 PvE and PvP builds, community theorycraft, races, stats, rotation, Legacy perks, and the Shadow talents reworked for Forever.
Shadow Priest at a Glance
The key choices for leveling now and planning a level-60 Shadow build.
Shadow Priest Pros and Cons in WoW Forever
Shadow gains much better Mana efficiency in Forever, but the spec still has clear limits.
- Weak large-pack AoE with no dedicated Shadow AoE spell.
- Low mobility and frequent hard casts or channels.
- Early leveling still relies heavily on wand damage.
- Direct healing requires leaving Shadowform.
- Shadowform cuts Shadow spell Mana costs by 50%.
- Vampiric Embrace converts Shadow damage into party healing.
- Shadow Word: Death gains a stronger execute window.
- Silence and Psychic Scream add useful caster control.
The main breakpoint is Shadowform. Before it, Mana efficiency and wand damage remain important. After it, Shadow spells cost half as much Mana, so Mind Flay, DoTs, and direct Shadow spells can take a much larger share of your damage.
Best Shadow Priest Talent Builds in WoW Forever
Shadow Priest Leveling Build
The current WoW Forever beta is capped at level 20, so this leveling build currently uses 2 / 0 / 9. Start with 2/2 Wand Specialization, then take 5/5 Spirit Tap and 2/2 Improved Shadow Word: Pain. For this solo setup, the final two points go into Shadow Reach.

- ★ A talent that has been modified compared to Classic.
Priest Shadow Magic talent build — Discipline 2, Holy 0, Shadow Magic 9.
2 / 0 / 9 Key talents: Spirit Tap 5/5, Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2, Shadow Reach 2/2, Wand Specialization 2/2Apply Shadow Word: Pain, use Mind Blast or other direct spells when they meaningfully shorten the fight, then finish with your wand. Spirit Tap rewards getting the killing blow, while the wand lets you stop spending Mana and gives regeneration more time to work. As later levels open, continue toward Mind Flay, Vampiric Embrace, and Shadowform.
Choose any WoW Forever leveling range up to 60 and skip part of the questing and travel grind.
Level 60 PvE Shadow Priest Build: 14 / 3 / 34
This PvE theorycraft combines Shadowform with Discipline sustain. Meditation keeps part of your normal Mana regeneration active while casting, Inner Focus provides a free spell, and the Shadow tree still reaches Improved Mind Flay, Vampiric Embrace, Shadow Weaving, Devouring Contagion, Early Demise, Darkness, and Shadowform.

Priest Shadow Magic talent build — Discipline 14, Holy 3, Shadow Magic 34.
14 / 3 / 34 Key talents: Shadowform, Vampiric Embrace, Mind Flay, Darkness 5/5, Shadow Focus 5/5, Spirit Tap 5/5The main tradeoff is giving up talents such as Improved Mind Blast, Blackout, and Silence to fund the Discipline and Holy points. It is a sustain-oriented level-60 setup to test once endgame levels become playable rather than a confirmed raid meta build.
Level 60 PvP Shadow Priest Build: 7 / 0 / 44
This theorycraft pushes much deeper into Shadow. Blackout adds stun pressure, Improved Mind Blast shortens Mind Blast’s cooldown, Silence adds caster control, and Early Demise makes Shadow Word: Death more dangerous once the target reaches its final 20% Health.

Priest Shadow Magic talent build — Discipline 7, Holy 0, Shadow Magic 44.
7 / 0 / 44 Key talents: Shadowform, Silence, Vampiric Embrace, Mind Flay, Darkness 5/5, Improved Mind Blast 5/5The seven Discipline points support the deep Shadow core without giving up its main offensive and control talents. Level-60 PvP is not available for beta testing yet, so this is a build to start experimenting with rather than a finished PvP meta setup.
Community Shadow Priest Builds Players Are Testing
These are the current most-viewed public Shadow Priest setups in the WoW Forever talent calculator. They show where community theorycraft is going, but popularity does not mean that a build is already proven at level 60.
| Community Rank | Build | What It Tests | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top 1 | 14 / 3 / 34 | Shadowform with a larger Discipline investment and three Holy points for extra casting support. | View Build |
| Top 2 | 14 / 3 / 34 | An alternative 14/3/34 version that changes the individual Shadow talent allocation while keeping the same tree split. | View Build |
| Top 3 | 14 / 0 / 37 | Drops the Holy investment and puts three additional points into the Shadow tree. | View Build |
The two most-viewed builds currently use the same 14/3/34 tree split, so the split alone does not tell the full story. Open the builds above to compare the individual Shadow talent choices.
Best Race for Shadow Priest in WoW Forever
Priest racial abilities matter more than generic racial bonuses when comparing Shadow options. Devouring Plague and Fear Ward are now available to every Priest, so Undead and Dwarf no longer have exclusive access to those spells.
| Race | Priest Racials | What Shadow Gets |
|---|---|---|
| Human |
Divine Grace, Feedback |
Divine Grace adds emergency ally support, while Feedback punishes enemy casters by burning Mana when their spells hit you. |
| Dwarf |
Desperate Prayer, Chastise |
Desperate Prayer provides an emergency self-heal. Chastise adds instant damage and a short root against Humanoids. |
| Night Elf |
Starshards, Elune’s Grace |
Starshards adds another ranged damage channel, while Elune’s Grace provides a defensive cooldown against attacks. |
| Gnome |
Confounding Flash, Contingency Plan |
Confounding Flash can control up to five nearby enemies until they take damage. Contingency Plan adds an emergency defensive effect for an ally later in progression. |
| Undead |
Touch of Weakness, Dark Sacrifice |
Dark Sacrifice converts Health into Mana, giving Shadow another resource tool. Touch of Weakness adds reactive Shadow damage against melee attackers. |
| Troll |
Hex of Weakness, Shadowguard |
Shadowguard deals reactive Shadow damage when you are hit, while Hex of Weakness reduces enemy pressure and healing effectiveness. |
There is not enough level-60 testing for a reliable overall race ranking yet. For Shadow specifically, Undead has direct Mana support through Dark Sacrifice, while Gnome brings useful crowd control and emergency group utility.
Best Professions for Shadow Priest
Tailoring + Enchanting is the straightforward caster setup for creating Cloth gear and recycling replaced equipment. Engineering + Mining adds combat utility and has extra synergy for Gnomes, while Alchemy + Herbalism gives you direct access to Mana and combat consumables while leveling.
Shadow Priest Stat Priority and Leveling Gear
For the current beta leveling bracket, use Spell Power > Critical Strike Chance > Hit Chance > Intellect > Mp5. Spell Power improves the damage you get from each Mana spent, while Crit and Hit improve offensive consistency. Treat this as a leveling priority, not a finished level-60 raid stat weight.
Keep your wand updated even when a Cloth item upgrade looks more exciting. Before Shadowform, wand damage lets you stop casting earlier in a pull, save Mana, and spend more of Spirit Tap’s duration regenerating for the next enemy.
Shadow Priest Rotation in WoW Forever
At low levels, Shadow Priest plays around efficiency rather than constant casting. Keep Power Word: Fortitude and Inner Fire active, use Power Word: Shield when needed, apply Shadow Word: Pain, and use direct spells only while their Mana cost is worth the time they remove from the fight.
Shadow Priest Damage Priority
Use a priority rather than forcing a fixed sequence.
Devouring Contagion lets Devouring Plague carry its remaining duration to another enemy when the target dies, which gives Shadow limited cleave. It does not solve the spec’s large-pack weakness because Shadow still lacks a dedicated Shadow AoE spell. Vampiric Embrace adds party healing while you continue dealing Shadow damage.
What Changed for Shadow Priest in WoW Forever?
| Change | WoW Forever |
|---|---|
| Shadowform | Increases Shadow damage by 10%, cuts Shadow spell Mana costs by 50%, increases Shadow critical damage, and reduces Physical damage taken by 15%. It prevents healing spells rather than every Holy spell. |
| Shadow Weaving | Now builds a personal Shadow damage increase up to 10%. It no longer gives Warlocks the old target-wide Shadow damage bonus. |
| Devouring Plague | No longer belongs only to Undead Priests. Every Priest race can use it. |
| Shadow Word: Death | Joins the Forever Priest toolkit and gains execute support from Early Demise. |
Key New and Reworked Shadow Priest Talents
| Talent | Forever Effect |
|---|---|
| Improved Mind Flay | Increases Mind Flay damage by 20% and adds 10 yards of range, with a weaker movement slow. |
| Devouring Contagion | Reduces Devouring Plague Mana cost by 50% and lets its remaining duration jump to a nearby enemy after a kill. |
| Early Demise | Adds 30% Shadow Word: Death critical strike chance against targets at or below 20% Health. |
| Silence | Still silences for 5 seconds and now also interrupts the current spellcast for 3 seconds. |
Best Legacy Perks for Shadow Priest
If you want earlier class talents, follow Well Rested 5/5 → Talented 5/5. Talented requires Well Rested and moves your first class talent points earlier, but it does not increase the final 51-point class talent cap.
Thrill of Adventure is the main alternative for outdoor leveling because kills restore part of your Health and Mana over time. It works naturally with Spirit Tap when chaining quest mobs, but you have to fit it around the same limited Legacy point budget.
