Which Apex Attachment should you unlock first in Modern Warfare 4? For a flexible Multiplayer weapon conversion, start with the M4 Hurricane. Choose Han 86 X20 Skybreaker when defenders behind cover are your main problem, or ISO Trace if target information is more valuable to you than changing your gun’s fire mode. These are our pre-launch S-tier recommendations, not official Infinity Ward rankings.
An Apex Attachment is a special, weapon-specific modification unlocked by reaching the weapon’s maximum level. It sits outside the standard Gunsmith attachment slots and can change the way the gun behaves. That makes choosing an Apex a different decision from choosing a strong base weapon, a recoil-reduction grip or a complete class setup.
MW4 Apex Attachments: Quick Facts
This guide compares 19 named Apex variants across 17 weapons that had normal weapon progression access in the published MW4 Open Beta. The tier list is based on Activision’s descriptions and practical role fit as of October 18, 2026. MW4 Multiplayer is scheduled to launch on October 23; there are no measured release-build win rates, damage multipliers or universal unlock-time claims behind these grades.
Best MW4 Apex Attachments to Unlock First
Start with the problem your current weapon cannot solve. A good Apex gives you a new way to win that specific fight; a flashy effect you never use is a poor return on a long leveling run.
| Your first goal | Our Apex pick | Why it makes sense | Beta weapon-level cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flexible rifle conversion | M4 Hurricane | Different, mobile, high-cadence M4 behavior | 68 |
| Force enemies off cover | Han 86 X20 Skybreaker | Integrated 20mm airburst launcher | 68 |
| Keep tabs on tagged targets | ISO Trace | RFID ammunition and optic tracking | 56 |
| Stay harder to locate on flanks | X-58 Void | Quieter shots and less informative enemy indicators | 47 |
| Pressure an occupied doorway | PPSh-41 Ember | Short incendiary area coverage | 54 |
| Deal with vehicles and streaks | Signal 50 Inferno | Incendiary ammunition designed for those targets | 73 |
All level caps in this table are from the Beta weapon listings, not guaranteed launch-build caps. If you have not decided which base weapon to play, consult our MW4 Best Weapons Tier List first. If you already have a favorite gun, use the ranking below to decide whether its max-level reward actually fits your playstyle.
Pick the Mod First, Then Choose How to Level the Gun
Apex rewards come from maxing the corresponding weapon. If you want to do the matches yourself, use our practical Weapon Leveling route; if you prefer the weapon levels completed for you, choose the MW4 Weapon Leveling service for the gun you selected. An Apex does not automatically complete a Mastery camo.
MW4 Apex Attachments Tier List (S–C)
Our tiers measure how useful a modification is to unlock for its intended job: distinctive tactical value, how often that value can matter, ease of using it, and the opportunity cost of fully leveling its weapon. They do not rank the base gun’s normal damage, time to kill or the absolute strength of every specialist situation.
| Tier | Apex Attachment | Weapon | What changes | Best reason to unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | M4 Hurricane | M4 | Agile, high-capacity 5.7x28mm conversion with a higher fire cadence | Flexible rifle players ready to change the M4’s feel |
| S | Han 86 X20 Skybreaker | Han 86 | Targeted 20mm airburst for pressuring cover | Objective attacks and defenders behind cover |
| S | ISO Trace | ISO Nightshade | RFID hit tracking shown through the dedicated optic | Mobile SMG players who want target information |
| A | X-58 Void | X-58 Nyx | Quieter subsonic fire, fewer enemy death cues and weaker directional hit feedback | Flanking and controlled stealth routes |
| A | PPSh-41 Ember | PPSh-41 | Underbarrel incendiary burst with short-lived area coverage | Doorways and objective denial |
| A | Hyeon Hyperburst | Hyeon Burst | Rapid three-shot opening burst followed by controlled full auto | Burst rifle specialists who also want follow-up fire |
| A | Kastov ARC | Kastov 762 | Integrated RF disruption aimed at infantry, electronics and vehicles | Team utility and electronic/vehicle pressure |
| A | KG-9 Drillcharge | KG-7 Vulcan | Surface-penetrating drillcharge projectile on a sniper platform | Dislodging defenders from strong cover |
| A | Rezi 12 Enforcer | Rezi 12 | Pump-action conversion with explosive slug capability | Shotgun users who need a different range option |
| B | Hyeon Auto | Hyeon Burst | Converts a burst rifle to continuous automatic fire | Players who dislike burst timing |
| B | Kastov 545 | Kastov 762 | Smoother-handling 5.45mm conversion for follow-up shots | Kastov users who prioritize control |
| B | Patriot XMR Volt | Patriot XMR | Underbarrel launcher firing a spread of stunning darts | Planned entries into tight defensive positions |
| B | FiNN Adverse | FiNN LMG | Increases rate of fire with an overheating drawback | LMG users managing pressure in short windows |
| B | Type 73 Assault | Type 73 | Top-magazine explosive rounds, reduced capacity | Area pressure with strict ammunition limits |
| B | MAR-9 Auto | MAR-9 | Fully automatic conversion for the marksman rifle | Precision players seeking continuous fire |
| B | Signal 50 Inferno | Signal .50 | Incendiary rounds with stronger vehicle and Killstreak damage | Ground War anti-vehicle or anti-streak support |
| C | Oris 8.6 Razor | Oris 8.6 | Deployable close-range kunai module | Long-range players who need a very specific fallback |
| C | GS Magna | .50 GS | Full-auto .50-caliber pistol with demanding accuracy | High-skill backup-weapon experimentation |
| C | Karit P68 Commando | Karit P68 | Close-range tactical knife with stronger melee and recoil stabilization | Pistol/melee niche setups |
How to read this chart: S is the clearest early leveling target for a broad or repeatedly useful new tool. A is excellent when its role matches your playstyle. B rewards a more deliberate specialist. C is a valid niche option rather than a broken or useless attachment. A Signal 50 Inferno can be better than an S-tier entry if your actual assignment is destroying enemy vehicles.
S Tier: The Three Apex Unlocks to Consider First
M4 Hurricane — Best Flexible Conversion
The base M4 is an adaptable automatic rifle; Hurricane changes that familiar platform into a top-loading 5.7x28mm variant with high capacity and a faster, more mobile character. The attraction is not a confirmed damage increase. It is that a gun many Multiplayer players already want to learn can grow into a distinct close-to-midrange option when fully leveled.
Choose Hurricane if you spend most of your time on mixed 6v6 maps and want one weapon family to support more than one tempo. Do not automatically replace a controlled, standard M4 build with it on long lanes: test both in the Firing Range and keep the version you can land shots with. See the MW4 Best Loadouts guide for the wider class and perk choices around your gun.
Han 86 X20 Skybreaker — Best Cover Pressure
X20 Skybreaker pairs a targeted optic with a 20mm airburst function. Instead of only challenging a defender’s exposed angle, it gives Han users a separate way to pressure someone holding cover. That is a clear tactical capability rather than a disguised recoil bonus.
It is our S-tier pick for attacking objectives with repeatable defensive positions. The important question in a real match is whether you can create space for your team with the airburst and then capitalize with your primary fire; do not assume it wins a duel without good timing or positioning.
ISO Trace — Best Information Utility
ISO Trace uses specialized RFID ammunition to tag targets you hit. Its integrated optic then shows information about the marked player’s movement and direction. This turns an aggressive SMG into a useful tracking platform when a wounded opponent escapes around a corner.
The effect depends on landing a shot first; it does not provide blanket awareness of every opponent on the map. Trace makes more sense for players who already use the ISO Nightshade well than for someone hoping a mod will fix inconsistent aim. The Beta also gave the ISO a comparatively accessible weapon-level target of 56.
A Tier: Excellent Effects for Specific Playstyles
X-58 Void and PPSh-41 Ember — Stealth versus Area Control
X-58 Void improves the concealment job of an already suppressed, subsonic weapon: a quieter report, hidden death-skull cues and reduced directional hit information for opponents. It is ideal for side routes and isolated engagements. It does not make you invisible to players who can see you or read your route.
PPSh-41 Ember works the opposite way. Its underbarrel pyrotechnic burst leaves short-lived incendiary coverage, useful for discouraging an immediate push through a doorway or buying a brief moment around an objective. It is not an endless fire trap or a reason to ignore normal positioning.
Hyeon Hyperburst and Kastov ARC — Alternative Fire and Utility
Hyeon Hyperburst opens with a very rapid three-round burst, then transitions into slower, controlled automatic fire. That makes it a more interesting specialist reward than simply adding RPM to the original burst rifle. Players who want ordinary full-auto handling may prefer the separate Hyeon Auto variant instead.
Kastov ARC introduces a directed RF-disruption effect with applications against infantry, electronics and vehicles. Its strength is the extra job it lets a Kastov user perform for their team. Activision has not supplied enough live-match comparison data to rank its target uptime or damage against other mods, so A here reflects utility, not an invented kill rate.
KG-9 Drillcharge and Rezi 12 Enforcer — Dislodging Defenders
KG-9 Drillcharge adds a surface-drilling explosive projectile to the KG-7 Vulcan sniper platform. You give a long-range class a way to contest someone who stops presenting a clear angle. That is particularly compelling when an opponent is holding a predictable protected position.
Rezi 12 Enforcer converts the shotgun to pump-action cycling and adds access to hot-loaded explosive slugs. The trade-off is a very different cadence from the base Rezi. Try it because you want a specialist shotgun capable of different engagements, not because every short-range player must replace a semi-auto setup.
B and C Tier: Worth Unlocking When the Use Case Fits
The next seven B-tier mods are not redundant. They are simply more conditional first investments than our top three. If you already play one of these guns every day, their value to you can easily be higher than the table suggests.
| Apex variant | Reason to choose it | Constraint to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Hyeon Auto | Prefer full-auto follow-up rather than the original burst fire | Changes weapon behavior but is less novel if you already enjoy conventional ARs |
| Kastov 545 | Want smoother recoil behavior and easier follow-up shots | A handling-focused conversion, not the RF utility of Kastov ARC |
| Patriot XMR Volt | Need a short-range stun-assisted entry tool | Dart spread helps create an opening; it is not a damage replacement |
| FiNN Adverse | Increase sustained-fire intensity in short windows | Heat builds up and the gun must cool before returning to full auto |
| Type 73 Assault | Like the explosive-round concept on an LMG | Reduced capacity makes ammunition discipline critical |
| MAR-9 Auto | Convert an accurate semi-auto marksman platform to full-auto | Not a promise of better precision or handling in every range band |
| Signal 50 Inferno | Target vehicles and Killstreaks in large matches | Specialist utility; our 6v6 tier underrates it for that job |
Oris 8.6 Razor, GS Magna and Karit P68 Commando form our C tier for general Multiplayer priorities. Razor is a close-range kunai fallback on a marksman rifle. GS Magna turns a high-caliber handgun fully automatic but puts extra pressure on control. Commando supports a pistol-and-melee playstyle with its close-quarters blade and stabilization. None is a universal bad choice; all are poor first grinds for a player who seldom uses those interactions.
Which MW4 Weapon Should You Max for Apex First?
Use a two-gun plan rather than treating all 19 variants as equally urgent. One first weapon should serve your usual matches, and the second can add a capability your first class lacks.
- Identify your recurring problem. Losing close fights suggests a handling or conversion goal; defenders who stay in cover make airburst or drillcharge utility more attractive; difficulty following damaged opponents gives ISO Trace a clear role.
- Choose the base gun you can already play. M4 Hurricane is a poor first target if you genuinely dislike the M4. A slightly lower-ranked Apex on your preferred gun may save you an entire unwanted leveling project.
- Check both kinds of unlock. First see whether you own the base weapon, then inspect its live Weapon XP progression. The Beta’s Player Rank gate and weapon-level cap are different numbers.
- Finish one Apex, test it, then decide on a second. Compare the same map type and practical engagement distance with and without the modification; make note of cooldowns, control trade-offs and how often you actually used the special effect.
- Keep ordinary attachments sensible. An Apex does not consume a standard attachment slot, but your recoil, optic and mobility choices still matter. Use Gunny as a starting build tool, then tune the result.
For a full DIY route, read How to Level Up Weapons in MW4. Players who would rather spend their available sessions using the completed gun can choose MW4 Weapon Leveling for their target weapon. If the goal is to play the matches personally, MW4 hosted Multiplayer sessions are a distinct selfplay option, not an Apex unlock guaranteed by a fixed amount of lobby time.
Which Beta Weapons Are Not in This Tier List?
Do not mistake a named Apex in a weapon encyclopedia for an Apex that every Beta account could manually earn. Activision specifically restricted Axion to Default Loadouts, Sang 9mm to Default Loadouts, and Wz. 55 Striga to a Campaign mission in the Beta. The first two had announced Apex concepts — Axion Crusader and Sang 9&12 — but normal Gunsmith and Apex access were not available through those restricted Beta loadouts. The Striga mod was still classified. These are excluded from our 19 ranked, normally accessible Beta variants.
The PILA and Combat Knife had no Gunsmith or Apex Attachment in the Beta listing. Also note that the official document names two different Apex variants for both Hyeon Burst and Kastov 762. The article ranks those variants separately but does not assume they can be equipped simultaneously or that the release build has the same unlock presentation.
How to Judge an Apex in Your Own Matches
An effect that feels spectacular in one highlight can be irrelevant across ten matches. Pick a typical mode, stay on similar sightlines, and change only one major feature at a time. The MW4 All Maps guide explains the kinds of environments available; you can then decide whether your test favors narrow entry routes, extended lanes or larger vehicle battles.
| Test question | What to observe | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Did the ability solve the problem? | Did the airburst displace cover, tracking find a target or stealth prevent a quick reaction? | One memorable clip proves a general win-rate advantage |
| Was the new cadence controllable? | Could you land follow-up shots with the Hurricane, Hyperburst or a full-auto conversion? | A higher fire rate always means a faster kill |
| Was the cost manageable? | Count actual useful activations, heat interruptions or missed slug shots | Special ammo or status effects are unlimited |
| Does it improve your normal class? | Keep your usual perks, map role and standard attachments as consistent as possible | The Apex ranking also tells you which perks and equipment are best |
