WoW Forever Fishing Leveling Guide 1–300: Routes, Trainers, Lures & Artisan Quest

WoW Forever Fishing Leveling 1–300 guide artwork featuring a dwarven fisherman catching a large fish, with fishing routes, trainers, Nat Pagle's Artisan quest and lure icons.

To level Fishing from 1 to 300 in WoW Forever, start with a basic Fishing Pole in a safe starter zone, train Journeyman before the 75 cap, read the Expert Fishing book from Booty Bay before 150, and finish Nat Pagle’s four-fish quest at skill 225 to unlock Artisan. You can raise the skill in easy water without constantly moving zones, or follow a route that catches fish useful for Cooking. Both choices work; the best one depends on whether you value simple skill gains or useful catches.

Fishing is a secondary profession, so it does not use either of your two primary profession slots. WoW Forever also gives anglers new Camping objects, extra Fishing-related Legacy perks and expanded uses for cooked fish. The route below uses the Forever profession records and published fishing requirements. Catch chances, seasonal fish and equipment tooltips can differ from what you remember from Classic, so use the actual skill and water shown by your character when choosing a spot.

Fishing 1–300 Quick Route

The key rule is simple: catch fish in water where you can reliably land the bobber, and unlock the next skill cap on time. Higher-level water is not required for faster skill progression. It mainly changes the types of fish you can catch and how much effective Fishing skill you need for a successful catch.

Choose your next step: If you enjoy gathering ingredients, the full route below will get you there. If you want to combine it with food buffs, save useful catches for Cooking. If the repeated casts and travel are the part you would rather skip, compare a dedicated Fishing Leveling service after checking its current availability and target-skill options.

Fishing Rank Caps: Trainers, Expert Book and Artisan Quest

There are four rank caps in Forever. You do not need to wait until the cap to learn the next rank, and waiting can waste successful catches. Expert and Artisan are not unlocked by buying the next trainer lesson.

RankSkill capWhen availableHow to unlock
Apprentice75Starting skillLearn from a Fishing trainer and buy a Fishing Pole
Journeyman150Fishing 50, character level 10Learn from a Fishing trainer
Expert225Fishing 125, character level 20Read Expert Fishing – The Bass and You, sold by Old Man Heming in Booty Bay
Artisan300Fishing 225, character level 35Complete Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme in Dustwallow Marsh

Common trap: Buying the Expert book does not automatically solve your skill cap while it remains unread. Keep it in your bags until you meet the requirements, then learn the rank before your Fishing reaches 150. The same principle applies to Artisan: reaching 225 does not raise your cap until you complete Nat Pagle’s quest.

Fishing Trainers for Alliance, Horde and Skyborne

For Apprentice and Journeyman, choose the closest trainer. You do not need to travel to a capital solely for your first Fishing lesson. In Forever, Zephras Isle and Riverglades also provide convenient options for new or traveling characters.

Trainers in the table teach early Fishing ranks. For Expert and Artisan, follow the book and quest instructions below instead of searching for a trainer who sells those upgrades. If a trainer’s window shows no new rank, check your current skill, character level and whether that rank is book- or quest-based.

Fishing 1–75: Safe Starter Water

Buy a basic Fishing Pole from a fishing or trade-supplies vendor, equip it, open the Professions tab and cast Fishing toward a reachable body of water. Click the bobber when it splashes; a cast that finishes without a landed fish is not the catch you want.

  • Alliance: use a pond or shoreline in Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh or Teldrassil. Pick water close to a town if your character is low level.
  • Horde: start around Durotar, Mulgore or Tirisfal Glades. Stay clear of hostile patrols so you can fish without interruptions.
  • Skyborne: Zephras Isle includes starter-level waters. Remain near your faction’s early settlement if you want the simplest route.

A Shiny Bauble helps early because it grants a temporary +25 Fishing skill bonus. It is most useful while your actual skill is below 25. Starter waters are listed at skill 1 to attempt and roughly 25 effective skill for reliable catches. Once you are catching consistently, you can save future lures for tougher waters.

Train Journeyman at Fishing 50 when your character meets its level requirement, or do it before you reach 75. There is no need to move to a dangerous zone just to see the next skill bracket.

Fishing 75–150: Capital Cities and the Expert Book

City waterways are convenient for this stage. Stormwind, Ironforge and Darnassus suit Alliance characters; Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff and Undercity suit the Horde. These waters have a lower reliable-catch threshold than Dustwallow or Tanaris, so they are a good place to raise skill while waiting for your next travel stop.

At Fishing 125 and character level 20, travel to Old Man Heming in Booty Bay, Stranglethorn Vale, around /way 27.4 77.0, and buy Expert Fishing – The Bass and You. Read the book to raise your skill cap to 225. Booty Bay is a neutral port, but the roads outside Stranglethorn are dangerous for low-level characters. If your character is not ready for the trip, keep leveling elsewhere and return when you can travel safely.

Once the book is learned, you may continue fishing in city water to save time. If you want fish with more Cooking uses, shift to suitable mid-level water as your effective Fishing increases.

Fishing 150–225: Dustwallow, Stranglethorn or Easy Water

Dustwallow Marsh and Stranglethorn Vale offer a more useful mix of mid-level catches, but they are not required for skill points. Their water is listed as requiring roughly 130 skill to attempt and 225 effective skill for a consistently successful catch. Your current Fishing skill plus a lure or rod bonus can help close the gap.

  • Alliance route: Dustwallow Marsh is convenient when traveling toward Theramore. Choose a shoreline you can reach safely and keep a lure ready if catches fail.
  • Horde route: Stranglethorn Vale is a practical option once you can reach Booty Bay and the surrounding coast. Avoid hostile patrols and crowded docks.
  • Low-risk fallback: stay in capital-city water if your only goal is Fishing skill. The fish will be simpler, but you will avoid frequent missed catches in challenging water.

At Fishing 225, you hit the Expert cap. To progress, you must complete the Artisan quest. This is a good point to combine the quest trip with exploring the higher-level zones you will eventually fish in.

How to Unlock Artisan Fishing: Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme

At character level 35 and Fishing 225, visit Nat Pagle in Dustwallow Marsh at about /way 58.6 60.0. Pick up Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme. He wants four unique fish caught in their specified regions.

Quest fishWhere to catch itPractical location
Feralas AhiFeralasRiver southeast of Dire Maul, near /way 63.5 53.6
Sar’theris StrikerDesolaceWestern coast at Sar’theris Strand
Savage Coast Blue SailfinStranglethorn ValeWestern coast at the Savage Coast
Misty Reed Mahi MahiSwamp of SorrowsEastern coast at Misty Reed Strand
  1. Accept the quest first. These four fish are specific quest catches. Ordinary fish from the same waters do not count.
  2. Use the named coast or river. You do not need to find a special fishing pool to catch each quest fish. Cast in the right natural water and keep trying.
  3. Carry spare lures. You may be able to attempt the water before you can fish there reliably. An effective-skill boost can help prevent failed catches during the long trip.
  4. Visit all four areas and return to Nat Pagle. Turning in the completed quest unlocks Artisan Fishing and raises your cap to 300.

For cross-continent travel, complete the two Kalimdor stops together (Feralas and Desolace) and the two Eastern Kingdoms stops together (Stranglethorn and Swamp of Sorrows). The order of fish is flexible. The dangerous part is often reaching the shoreline, not the act of casting, so prepare travel routes appropriate to your character level.

Fishing 225–300: Tanaris and High-Value Catch Options

Tanaris is a useful optional destination after unlocking Artisan. Its coastal waters allow catches such as Raw Summer Bass and Raw Winter Squid when the respective seasonal catch is available. Their presence depends on the season; do not build a shopping or profit plan around both appearing at once.

Tanaris has a listed minimum effective skill around 205 and a reliable-catch threshold around 300. Use a lure while your natural skill is lower. If your catches are failing or the coast is crowded, return to Dustwallow or another easier waterway. You can still increase your Fishing skill without catching the most valuable fish in the game.

Some special high-level waters, including certain zones in Azshara and Winterspring, require more than 300 effective Fishing skill even to begin. Skill 300 is the standard profession cap, not a guarantee that every water in the world is accessible without a rod, lure or another bonus.

Fishing Skill Requirements by Water

Do not confuse minimum skill to fish with skill for reliable catches. A waterway may allow your cast but still yield many escaped fish. The table below follows the Forever water bands; individual locations, subzones and special pools can have different requirements.

Minimum effective FishingApprox. reliable-catch skillExample watersBest use
125Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Durotar, Mulgore, Teldrassil, Tirisfal Glades, Zephras IsleStarting skill without danger
175Stormwind, Ironforge, Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, Undercity, The Barrens, WestfallSimple Fishing 75–150 route
55150Redridge Mountains, Wetlands, Ashenvale, Duskwood, Stonetalon MountainsIntermediate fish while questing
130225Dustwallow Marsh, Desolace, Stranglethorn Vale, Swamp of Sorrows, Arathi HighlandsUseful catches and Artisan quest areas
205300Tanaris, Feralas, Felwood, The Hinterlands, Un’Goro Crater, most of AzsharaLater Cooking fish and varied catches
330425Winterspring, Burning Steppes, Eastern Plaguelands, Azshara’s Bay of StormsAdvanced fishing with effective-skill bonuses

These are effective Fishing skill thresholds, including applicable equipment and temporary bonuses. If your natural skill is 225 and a lure adds +75, your effective skill is 300 while the lure remains active. This helps you fish in Tanaris without waiting for natural skill 300; it does not raise your permanent skill cap.

Best Fishing Lures, Poles and Bonuses

Keep one spare lure instead of buying every possible fishing item. The biggest improvement for a new angler is usually moving from frequent escaped fish to a reliable catch in the water you have chosen.

ItemPublished skill bonusMinimum Fishing skillWhen it is useful
Shiny Bauble+251Starter waters before your natural skill reaches 25
Nightcrawlers+5050Intermediate water while still training
Bright Baubles+75100Quest fish and harder coasts before 225–300
Aquadynamic Fish Attractor+100100More difficult waters and higher effective-skill checks

A Big Iron Fishing Pole and other enhanced poles can provide additional Fishing skill, but some Forever beta reports disagree about exact item tooltips. Compare the current in-game bonus before choosing or buying expensive equipment. The same caution applies to extra Fishing bonuses on food, gear and enchants: they are helpful where supported, but they do not replace Expert or Artisan training.

What to Keep: Fishing for Cooking, Pets and Useful Catches

Fishing is easiest to justify while leveling when you use what you catch. The WoW Forever Cooking 1–300 Guide owns the recipe-by-recipe route. Use it to decide which raw fish should go into your Cooking bag rather than vendoring every catch.

  • Early catches: Raw Brilliant Smallfish, Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper and Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish can support early Cooking progression.
  • Mid-level catches: Raw Mithril Head Trout and Raw Redgill fit the higher recipe brackets. Save some if you plan to level Cooking later.
  • Late catches: Nightfin Snapper and selected seasonal fish are useful for specific cooking recipes. They are not guaranteed from every cast or every season.
  • Other uses: Some fish feed Hunter pets or serve as reagents for Forever camp objects. Check the item before selling a whole stack.

If your main goal is gold rather than Cooking or Fishing skill, compare the actual Auction House return with vendor value and listing costs. Our WoW Forever Gold Farming Guide covers that decision. There is no honest fixed gold-per-hour figure for a fresh server’s fishing market.

New Fishing Camping Objects in WoW Forever

Forever gives Fishing its own camp feature recipes. They are bonuses you can use alongside your normal profession route, not replacements for actually fishing to improve skill. All three require a nearby campfire and the corresponding recipe or blueprint.

Fishing objectRequired skillWhere the recipe comes fromUseful effect
Fish Bowl20Fishing trainer / starter Fishing Camping questBasic camp stat benefit; recipe uses Raw Brilliant Smallfish and Empty Vial
Fishing Rack140Recipe drop associated with Gelihast in Blackfathom DeepsTemporary ability to catch uncommon fish, plus earlier camp benefits
Fishing Hut300Blueprint: Fishing HutTemporary ability to catch rare fish, plus earlier camp benefits

Skill 140 does not automatically teach the Fishing Rack pattern, and skill 300 alone does not award the Fishing Hut blueprint. These special camp benefits must be activated; they do not turn every normal cast into a rare fish. For campsite limits, one-hour shared feature cooldowns, buff stacking and who can use objects, see the WoW Forever Camping Guide.

Legacy Perks and the Stranglethorn Fishing Tournament

Three Forever Legacy perks can change how Fishing fits into your broader progression. Working Overtime supports tradeskill progression, Luremaster may give an additional catch while a lure is active, and Dedicated Study offers a way to raise the lowest profession skill on its cooldown. These perks are optional; none is necessary to complete Fishing 1–300. For earning Legacy points and choosing perks, use the WoW Forever Legacy System Guide.

The Stranglethorn Fishing Tournament also changes in Forever. The current profession database describes the first 50 finishing anglers as eligible winners and lists the Arcanite Fishing Pole and an Extravagant Extravaganza Coin among the event rewards. Treat the tournament as an optional competition, not as the normal leveling route or a guaranteed reward on every attempt.

Common Fishing Problems and How to Fix Them

  1. My Fishing skill is stuck at 75, 150 or 225. Check the rank cap. Journeyman comes from a trainer, Expert from the Booty Bay book and Artisan from Nat Pagle’s quest.
  2. The bobber keeps escaping. Your water may need more effective Fishing skill. Apply an appropriate lure or move to an easier lake, city canal or coastline.
  3. I cannot use my Fishing Pole. Make sure you learned Fishing, have the rod equipped and are facing accessible water. Use the Fishing ability from the Professions tab.
  4. My quest fish is not appearing. Confirm Nat Pagle’s quest is active, use the named stretch of water, and cast repeatedly. These are quest-specific catches, not guaranteed fish from a special school.
  5. My high-level water rejects the cast. Some waters require more than natural skill 300 to attempt. Check the relevant subzone and use equipment or lures only when they raise your effective skill sufficiently.
  6. My Fishing level rises slowly. Successful catches are what matter, and skill-ups become less frequent at higher skill. Move to easy water if failed catches are wasting more time than the higher-value fish are worth.
  7. I reached 140 or 300 but cannot make a Fishing Rack or Hut. The higher-tier camp patterns have separate unlocks. Skill level alone does not grant every recipe.

WoW Forever Fishing 1–300 FAQ

Can I level Fishing from 1 to 300 in one low-level area?

You can continue earning Fishing skill from successful catches in easier water after learning each rank. Harder zones are mainly useful when you want different fish. You still need the Expert book and Nat Pagle’s Artisan quest to raise your skill caps.

When do I learn Journeyman, Expert and Artisan Fishing?

Journeyman is available around Fishing 50 and character level 10. Expert uses the book from Old Man Heming at Fishing 125 and character level 20. Artisan requires Nat Pagle’s quest at Fishing 225 and character level 35.

Where do I get Expert Fishing – The Bass and You?

Buy it from Old Man Heming in Booty Bay, Stranglethorn Vale, near /way 27.4 77.0. Read it when eligible; it raises your Fishing cap to 225.

Which four fish are needed for Nat Pagle?

Feralas Ahi, Sar’theris Striker, Savage Coast Blue Sailfin and Misty Reed Mahi Mahi. Catch them in Feralas, Desolace, western Stranglethorn Vale and eastern Swamp of Sorrows respectively while the quest is active.

Is Fishing a primary profession in WoW Forever?

No. It is a secondary profession, like Cooking and First Aid. You may learn it in addition to your two primary professions.

Do lures increase my permanent Fishing skill?

No. They temporarily raise your effective skill for water requirements and successful catches. Your permanent skill rises through Fishing activity, and training or quest unlocks still determine its cap.

Do I need Fishing 300 for Tanaris?

Not to attempt typical Tanaris coastal water: the published Forever water table lists a minimum around 205 and a reliable-catch threshold around 300 effective skill. A lure can help you bridge the gap.

Do I need to buy Fishing Leveling to complete this route?

No. The full progression is available through in-game trainers, the Expert book, Nat Pagle’s quest and your own Fishing Pole. The Fishing Leveling service is an optional time-saving choice if you prefer not to do the repeated casting yourself.

For the exact current Fishing water bands, trainers, camp patterns and profession details, consult the Wowhead Forever Fishing overview. For the shared campsite system, Blizzard’s official Camping explanation covers how player-made camp objects work together.
