Protection Paladin is a shield tank built around Holy threat, blocking, Seals, Judgement, and party utility. WoW Forever directly addresses several problems that limited Prot Paladin in original Classic: Seal of Fury gives Judgement a taunt, new talents return Mana while you are being attacked, and Templar’s Bulwark adds a major defensive cooldown. The current beta supports an early tank build, while complete PvE and PvP setups remain level-60 theorycraft.

Best Protection Paladin Talent Builds in WoW Forever
The current beta can test Protection through level 20, but the deepest tank talents still require level-60 theorycraft. The starter build below is usable now. The PvE and PvP setups show current directions for Holy Shield, Templar’s Bulwark, Mana sustain, and control without presenting them as a finished meta.
Protection Paladin Leveling Build
Build status: Recommended Starter Build. At the current level-20 cap, use a 0/11/0 setup with 5/5 Redoubt, 3/3 Precision, 2/5 Anticipation, and 1/3 Shield Specialization.
Redoubt gives you additional block when melee attacks trigger it, while Precision reduces misses on your attacks and Judgements. Anticipation begins adding Defense, and the first point in Shield Specialization improves your shield and lets blocks start returning Mana.
Level 20 is especially important for Protection because Consecration becomes a baseline Paladin ability. That gives you a reliable area-threat tool without spending talent points to unlock it.
Choose any WoW Forever leveling range up to 60 and skip part of the questing and travel grind.

Paladin Protection talent build — Holy 0, Protection 11, Retribution 0.
0 / 11 / 0 Key talents: Redoubt 5/5, Precision 3/3, Anticipation 2/5, Shield Specialization 1/3Protection Paladin PvE Build
Build status: Community Build, Level 60 theorycraft. The 8/43/0 setup reaches Holy Shield and takes most of the new Protection package: Improved Seal of Fury, Improved Righteous Fury, Shield Specialization, Sacred Duty, Swift Judgement, Templar’s Bulwark, Reckoning, Iron Creed, and One-Handed Weapon Specialization.
The eight Holy points add Improved Holy Strike, Divine Intellect, and Improved Seals. This supports the main tank loop by giving Holy Strike more uptime, increasing the Mana pool, and improving Seal and Judgement damage.
The build is aimed at dungeon and raid tanking, but level-60 bosses are not available in the current beta. Final Defense requirements, threat limits, and encounter-specific tank builds still need live testing.

Build status: Community Build, PvP-oriented Level 60 theorycraft. The 14/37/0 setup shifts points from pure PvE threat into survivability and control. Protection takes Guardian’s Favor, Sacred Duty, Improved Hammer of Justice, Templar’s Bulwark, Reckoning, Iron Creed, and Holy Shield.
The Holy side adds Spiritual Focus, Unyielding Faith, Voice of Truth, and Reverence. That gives the build better self-healing under pressure, shorter Fear and Disorient effects, temporary protection from Silence and Interrupt effects, and some Mana regeneration while casting.
This is an objective-defense build. It fits control points and flag escorts better than chasing damage meters.

Public Protection Paladin builds already show several different ways to split the 51 talent points. These are useful theorycraft signals, not confirmed level-60 tank rankings.
| Build | Split | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Prot Main Tank | 8/43/0 | Maximum Protection depth with Holy Shield, Templar’s Bulwark, Iron Creed, and strong Mana support. |
| Ret Utility Prot | 2/40/9 | Keeps deep Protection while adding Deflection, faster Judgement, and cheaper Consecration through Retribution. |
| Threat Hybrid | 2/36/13 | Trades some Protection points for Parry, Judgement utility, cheaper Holy spells, and Vindication. |
Best Race for Protection Paladin in WoW Forever
Protection Paladin has three current race options: Human and Dwarf for Alliance, and Undead for Horde. For tanking, defensive racials usually matter more than small offensive gains.
| Goal | Alliance Picks | Horde Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| PvE Tanking | Dwarf, Human | Undead | Dwarf gets Stoneform as another defensive cooldown. Human gains weapon and Spirit utility, while Undead is the only Horde Paladin option. |
| PvP | Dwarf, Human | Undead | Stoneform, Will to Survive, and Will of the Forsaken answer different forms of control or dangerous debuffs. |
| Leveling | Dwarf, Human | Undead | Dwarf has strong defensive utility, Human works well with sword upgrades, and Undead has useful recovery between pulls. |
Dwarf is the clearest Alliance tank pick during the current beta because Stoneform gives you another defensive tool when physical damage or removable effects become dangerous. Human remains viable, especially when good swords are available. Undead has no Horde race competition and brings Will of the Forsaken, Cannibalize, and Touch of the Grave.
Best Professions for Protection Paladin in WoW Forever
| Goal | Professions | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dungeon Utility | Engineering + Mining | Engineering adds bombs, gadgets, and extra control while Mining supplies many of its materials. |
| PvE / Self-Supply | Blacksmithing + Mining | Craft plate, weapons, and shields while gathering your own ore. |
| Endgame Utility | Engineering + Blacksmithing | Combines combat tools with Paladin equipment crafting if you can support both without gathering professions. |
Engineering + Mining is especially useful while tanking because an extra stun or damage tool can help stabilize a large pull. Blacksmithing + Mining is the simpler route if you prefer crafting your own equipment and campsite utility.
Protection Paladin Stat Priority in WoW Forever
For the current beta, use Weapon Damage > Hit Chance > Stamina > Strength > Armor > Agility > Critical Chance as a practical leveling starting point.
Weapon Damage matters more while leveling because auto-attacks still make up a large part of your damage. Hit improves the reliability of your attacks and Judgements, which matters even more when Judgement is also your taunt. Stamina gives you more room for mistakes, while Armor becomes increasingly valuable when several physical enemies are hitting you at once.
Do not copy a fixed Classic Defense cap into Forever yet. Level-60 bosses have not been opened for testing, so raid Defense, Hit, Block, and threat targets need to be established from Forever encounters rather than inherited from old tables.
What Gear Should Protection Paladin Use in WoW Forever?
Use a one-handed weapon and shield while tanking. Look for Stamina, useful threat stats, a strong shield, and enough Mana to maintain your abilities without drinking after every pull.
Protection Paladins wear Mail early and gain Plate at level 40. Armor becomes more important when you tank several melee enemies, but item quality alone does not decide an upgrade. A lower-rarity shield or weapon can be better if its defensive value, damage, or useful stats fit your current setup.
There is no reliable Forever Pre-BiS list yet. Dungeon loot and itemization are being changed, so old Classic Protection Paladin lists should not be copied directly.
Protection Paladin Tank Rotation and Threat Priority
Protection Paladin threat starts with keeping the correct tank buffs active and spending Mana where it actually protects your threat lead. Consecration remains the center of multi-target tanking, while Judgement and Holy Strike handle priority targets.
How Protection Paladin Tanking Works
Use this as the current beta starter loop. A final level-60 raid priority is not settled yet.
How Seal of Fury Changes Protection Paladin Tanking
Seal of Fury addresses the biggest limitation that kept Protection Paladin away from many raid tank roles in original Classic: it gives the spec a real taunt. While Seal of Fury is active, Judgement forces the target to attack you for 4 seconds. Because Judgement no longer consumes your active Seal in Forever, you can keep the tank Seal running and use Judgement when a mob escapes or a tank swap is required.
The same Seal also supports Protection’s new Mana economy. Melee attacks create small absorb shields while you have a shield equipped, and Improved Seal of Fury restores Mana when that absorb is fully consumed. Shield Specialization adds another source of Mana through successful blocks. A large melee pack therefore helps fund the abilities you use to hold it.
Swift Judgement covers another important tanking problem. It finishes Judgement’s remaining cooldown and makes the next Judgement free, so a missed taunt or second loose enemy does not automatically become a failed pull. Blizzard specifically highlighted this interaction when explaining the new Protection design.
This makes Protection Paladin much more complete on paper than its original Classic version, but one question still needs real level-60 evidence: how its threat, survivability, and Mana economy hold up against actual raid bosses over long encounters.
Best Legacy Talents for Protection Paladin
Well Rested and Talented remain useful while leveling. Well Rested improves rested experience, while Talented moves talent-point access earlier without raising the final 51-point limit.
Reinforce is especially relevant to a tank because it reduces durability loss after deaths. Gourmand extends useful food buffs, Bountiful Harvest supports Mining, and For Great Honor fits a Protection Paladin built for battleground objective defense. At launch, each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points.
What Changed for Protection Paladin in WoW Forever?
Protection Paladin receives changes aimed directly at the issues that limited Classic tanking. Seal of Fury creates a taunt through Judgement, incoming attacks can restore Mana, Holy Strike can become a threat and mitigation tool, and Templar’s Bulwark gives the spec a large emergency absorb.
Consecration is now learned from the Paladin trainer at level 20 instead of requiring a Holy talent. Its strongest damage is focused on the first four enemies that enter it, so Protection still has strong area threat without unlimited scaling against huge packs.
Key New and Reworked Protection Paladin Talents
| Talent | What It Changes | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Improved Seal of Fury | Restores Mana when the absorb generated by Seal of Fury is fully consumed. | Taking damage can help sustain your tank rotation instead of only draining your resources. |
| Swift Judgement | Finishes Judgement’s remaining cooldown and makes the next Judgement free. | You gain an emergency second taunt attempt or another fast Judgement during a threat problem. |
| Sacred Duty | Adds Stamina and shortens the cooldown of Divine Shield, Divine Protection, and Templar’s Bulwark. | It improves both passive durability and access to major defensive cooldowns. |
| Iron Creed | Improves Holy Strike threat and makes Holy Strike reduce incoming damage while Righteous Fury is active. | A normal threat button also becomes part of your active mitigation. |
These talents are present in current Forever data, but tuning continues to move during beta. Level-60 threat and survivability comparisons should wait for actual raid testing.
