WoW Forever Paladin Guide

WoW Forever Paladin guide with a golden hammer crest, radiant wings, and a central title against a fantasy cathedral backdrop.

Paladin in WoW Forever can heal as Holy, tank as Protection, or deal melee damage as Retribution. All three paths share Mana, Seals, Blessings, and defensive utility. Your specialization changes which part of that toolkit you develop, rather than removing your responsibility to support the group.

Forever adds baseline attacks, changes how Judgement interacts with Seals, and introduces Undead Paladins. This guide explains those class-wide changes, compares the three specializations, and helps you choose a starting path. Use the linked specialization guides for detailed builds, rotations, stats, and profession choices.

Paladin Strengths and Tradeoffs

Choose Paladin for the combination of a main combat role and practical support tools.

Cons
  • No dedicated interrupt; a stun cannot replace a reliable interrupt against every enemy.
  • Melee damage loses value when enemies keep you out of weapon range.
  • Attacks, healing, and utility compete for Mana. One gear set does not support every role equally well.
Pros
  • Healing, tanking, and melee damage are available through different talent paths.
  • Shared Blessings, Auras, and defensive spells remain useful outside your main role.
  • Baseline Holy Strike and Consecration give more active combat tools without requiring a specific talent tree.

What Changed for Paladin in WoW Forever?

The biggest changes are not all talents. Several tools now belong to the shared class toolkit, so an old Classic build can give the wrong impression of what a low-level Paladin can do.

Change What It Means
Holy Strike Learned at level 6, this instant weapon strike deals Holy damage. It gives every Paladin an active melee attack before deeper talent choices.
Judgement Judging no longer consumes your active Seal. You do not need to recast the same Seal after every Judgement.
Consecration Available baseline at level 20 rather than requiring Holy talent points. It deals greater damage and threat to its first four targets, with lower output beyond them. Four is not a hard target limit.
Blessing of Kings Baseline at level 20, with a one-hour duration. You no longer choose a talent route just to unlock this group buff.

These changes improve the starting toolkit. They do not give every Paladin the full healing, tanking, or damage package of a developed specialization. Blizzard’s class rework overview also preserves meaningful limits, including the lack of a dedicated interrupt.

Paladin Specializations: Which Spec Should You Play?

Choose the job you want to perform most often. A Paladin can bring emergency support outside that job, but shared abilities do not make one build equally effective at all three roles.

Specialization Main Role Choose It For
Holy Healer Watching health, managing Mana, and supporting allies.
Protection Tank Controlling enemies, building threat, and managing incoming damage.
Retribution Melee DPS Two-handed weapon combat, Holy damage, and offensive Seal interactions.

Holy Paladin

Holy develops the healing side of the class. Holy Light and Flash of Light support focused healing, while talents improve the efficiency and reliability of your casts. Your main decisions concern who needs help, how urgently they need it, and how much Mana you can afford to spend.

Later, Light’s Vigil interacts with Holy Shock to add party healing. That is a different capability from automatically healing everyone in a raid. Holy also retains offensive tools, so a Holy talent path is not a promise to stop dealing damage while leveling.

Read the WoW Forever Holy Paladin Guide for healing priorities, starter talents, and the tradeoffs behind later healing builds.

Protection Paladin

Protection is the tanking path for players who want a one-handed weapon, a shield, and control over enemy attention. Its important change is the relationship between Seal of Fury and Judgement. The Seal supplies Holy damage and an absorb effect with a shield equipped; judging it taunts the target.

This is not a separate, unconditional taunt button. Your active Seal matters. Protection talents then develop the surrounding threat, survival, and Mana tools. A shield and access to Consecration are useful foundations, but they do not remove the need to plan pulls or control incoming damage.

Read the WoW Forever Protection Paladin Guide for tanking builds, threat priorities, shield interactions, and defensive choices.

Retribution Paladin

Retribution develops two-handed melee damage supported by Holy Strike, Seals, and Judgement. It suits players who want to attack at close range while keeping healing and defensive utility available. Weapon upgrades and time spent in melee remain important practical concerns.

The later Twist of Light talent adds an Echo when you replace a qualifying Seal, carrying its effect into your next melee attack. That talent-supported interaction should not be confused with assuming every old expansion’s manual Seal Twisting rules work unchanged.

Read the WoW Forever Retribution Paladin Guide for damage builds, rotation priorities, and the detailed Seal Twisting discussion.

Paladin Races in WoW Forever

The announced race and class combinations give Paladin three options: Human and Dwarf on the Alliance, or Undead on the Horde. Your faction choice therefore narrows the decision before racial optimization begins.

Race Relevant Racial Tools Practical Difference
Human
Alliance
Sword Specialization Improves critical strike chance for attacks and spells while a sword is equipped. The benefit is not restricted to melee damage.
Dwarf
Alliance
Mace Specialization; Stoneform Maces support attack and spell criticals. Stoneform provides defensive value against physical damage, Bleeds, Poisons, and Diseases.
Undead
Horde
Will of the Forsaken; Cannibalize Removes Charm, Fear, and Sleep effects. Cannibalize restores Health and Mana from eligible nearby corpses between fights.

This is not a universal race ranking. Weapon availability, role, and the control effects you expect to face can change the value of each package. Use the individual specialization guides for the narrower PvE and PvP decision.

Undead Paladins also have a distinct class story around Bandarion Keep in Tirisfal Glades. Blizzard’s Forsaken Paladin preview describes their struggle to use the Light and find acceptance within their own faction.

Core Paladin Mechanics to Understand

Seals, Judgement, and Blessings Are Different Systems

A Seal changes your own combat effects and determines what its Judgement does. A Blessing supports a friendly target. Do not treat changing Seals as changing the buff you have given your healer or tank.

Only one normal Seal can be active on you at a time. Likewise, a player can receive only one Blessing from each Paladin at a time. With multiple Paladins, coordinate different Blessings rather than assuming one person can supply every buff to the same target. Long-duration buffs such as Kings are also different from short defensive utility spells.

Defensive Tools Still Have Restrictions

Paladin defenses should be planned, not treated as a stack of independent emergency buttons. For example, Protection’s later Templar’s Bulwark applies Forbearance and cannot be cast while that restriction is active. Read these conditions before relying on a second defensive immediately afterward.

Group support also depends on the situation. Auras support nearby allies, while a timely heal or defensive spell can help someone outside your main assignment. Those actions still cost time or resources; they are decisions, not passive benefits of selecting the class.

Shockadin Is a Playstyle, Not a Fourth Talent Tree

Players use Shockadin for damage-focused Paladin play built around Holy Shock and related Holy tools. The label does not identify one fixed allocation or add a fourth specialization. Compare the actual talents and intended role before treating two Shockadin proposals as equivalent.

Use the Holy guide to understand the spell interactions and the Paladin calculator to inspect hybrid allocations. Do not assume a spell-focused damage setup keeps the full healing package of a dedicated Holy build.

Which Paladin Spec Should You Level?

For mostly solo questing, start by considering Retribution. Its weapon-focused damage matches the activity you repeat most often: defeating enemies yourself. This is a practical starting recommendation, not a tested claim that it wins every leveling route.

Choose Protection when tanking groups is a major part of the plan. You get more use from investment in threat and survival when enemies are meant to attack you. That does not make every large solo pull efficient or safe.

Choose Holy when you expect to spend much of your time healing others. Early Holy routes can still invest in offensive tools for questing. Conversely, access to baseline healing does not require that every low-level Paladin already follows a finished endgame healer build.

Match the guide to your intended job, then follow its current leveling section. Avoid copying a level-60 allocation into a low-level character or assuming later talents are already available. Keep appropriate equipment for the role you actually perform.

Planning Your Paladin Leveling?

Choose a custom Paladin leveling range for after launch and reduce repeated questing and grinding. Check the product's current availability before ordering. This level-60 service is not an offer to exceed the beta cap.

What Paladin Brings to PvE and PvP

In dungeons, the useful distinction is your assignment: Holy manages healing, Protection controls enemies, and Retribution contributes damage while retaining support buttons. Agree on that assignment before the pull. An emergency heal from a damage dealer is useful, but it is not the same as bringing a dedicated healer.

For raids, judge later builds through encounter testing rather than promises of a guaranteed slot. Party-based healing, the number of targets a tank can manage, and sustained damage all need context. The full talent tree shows available tools, not a finished performance ranking.

In PvP, think about helping an ally survive, removing pressure, or reaching a target rather than only comparing damage. Blizzard has retained the class’s lack of a dedicated interrupt and its limitations against kiting. Having a stun does not mean every enemy cast can be stopped, and a new melee attack does not solve every ranged matchup.

Planning Your Paladin Talents

Use the WoW Forever Paladin Talent Calculator to inspect Holy, Protection, and Retribution allocations, compare presets, and plan a hybrid. The tool answers which talents fit together; the specialization guide explains why that allocation supports a particular job.

Check a preset’s label before using it. A starter leveling build and a level-60 PvE or PvP theorycraft build are not interchangeable. Talents alone also do not turn healing gear into a tank set or a two-handed damage setup into a shield build. Choose a main role first, then check its equipment and profession recommendations in the relevant guide.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Paladin use Holy Power as a resource in WoW Forever?

No. Paladin uses Mana rather than the Holy Power resource system from later versions of WoW. The Forever Holy tree does contain a talent named Holy Power, but it improves spell critical strike chance. It is not a resource that you generate and spend.

Will Undead Paladins have their own epic mount quest?

Yes. Blizzard has announced a separate level-60 epic mount quest for Forsaken Paladins. Its story follows Retribution, while the Alliance Paladin charger story follows Redemption. This is an announced progression feature, not a quest walkthrough verified at the opening beta cap.
