To level Rogue Lockpicking from 1 to 300 in WoW Forever, learn Pick Lock around character level 16, keep Thieves’ Tools in your bags, and practice on locks that still give skill points. Start at Alther’s Mill in Redridge Mountains as Alliance or the pirate ship south of Ratchet as Horde. Move through mid-level footlockers, The Slag Pit, and finally Heavy Junkboxes or Blackrock Depths locks.
Lockpicking is a Rogue class skill, not a primary profession. You do not buy Journeyman, Expert, or Artisan ranks for it. Your maximum skill is five times your character level, up to 300 at level 60. That level cap is as important as the practice location: a level-30 Rogue cannot raise Lockpicking beyond 150, even with an endless supply of boxes.
Lockpicking 1–300 Quick Route
Use this as your travel plan, then read the faction quest and high-skill sections below before making a long trip. These brackets describe where to practice, not a promise that every lock can be opened at the first number or that every pick will award a point. Look at the lock’s color and requirement in your client.
| Current skill | Best practice location | Target locks or items | Useful fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–90 | Alther’s Mill (Alliance) or pirate ship south of Ratchet (Horde) | Practice Lockboxes or Buccaneer’s Strongboxes | Keep opening eligible starter locks while your character cap allows |
| 90–150 | Zoram Strand, Windshear Crag, Wetlands or Durnholde Keep | Waterlogged / Battered Footlockers; many need 70 or 110 | Move to another group of boxes if the next lock is too difficult |
| 150–175 | Desolace coast or upper Angor Fortress (Badlands) | Waterlogged / Battered Footlockers requiring around 150 | Pickpocketed junkboxes from suitable humanoids |
| 175–200 | Lower Angor Fortress or accessible Desolace coast | Dented Footlockers from 175 | Use the other zone if travel or enemy levels make it impractical |
| 200–225 | Lower Slag Pit, Searing Gorge | Dented Footlockers from 200 | Mix in Sturdy Junkboxes you can pick |
| 225–250 | Upper Slag Pit, Searing Gorge | Higher-tier Dented Footlockers from 225 | Eligible reinforced or metal lockboxes |
| 250–280 | High-level humanoids or Blackrock Depths | Heavy Junkboxes from 250; accessible dungeon locks | Ask guildmates for unopened level-appropriate lockboxes |
| 280–300 | Blackrock Depths near the entrance and Shadowforge locks | Suitable dungeon doors, supplemented with Heavy Junkboxes | Repeat different eligible locks as available; observe instance-reset limits |
Practical choice: If you are already questing in Kalimdor, Ashenvale and Desolace save travel. For an Eastern Kingdoms character, Wetlands, Badlands and Searing Gorge form a convenient progression. If boxes are heavily contested, combine Pick Pocket with ordinary leveling instead of camping one spawn.
Rogue Level Requirements and Maximum Lockpicking Skill
Lockpicking has no separate profession-rank purchase. Your current character level controls the maximum, even when you can find harder locks. In the usual Forever/Classic ruleset, the formula is maximum Lockpicking = character level × 5.
| Rogue character level | Maximum Lockpicking skill | What this means |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | 80 | Learn Pick Lock and begin faction practice quests |
| 20 | 100 | Enough room to complete most early lock practice |
| 30 | 150 | You can work through the first mid-level footlockers |
| 35 | 175 | The next tier of Dented Footlockers becomes useful |
| 40 | 200 | Prepare to move toward Searing Gorge |
| 45 | 225 | Unlock the next Slag Pit tier when your actual skill reaches it |
| 50 | 250 | You can reach Heavy Junkbox opening skill |
| 56 | 280 | High-end dungeon lock practice becomes possible |
| 60 | 300 | Final lockpicking cap |
Do not confuse skill cap with opening requirement. A level-20 Rogue can have 100 maximum skill, but a 110-skill footlocker is still too difficult until actual Lockpicking reaches 110 and the Rogue levels far enough for that cap.
Once you know your current character-level cap, the choice is straightforward: keep farming locks within that cap, continue your 1–60 leveling route, or use a service for a skill range your Rogue can already reach.
Train the Skill Yourself or Skip the Practice Loop
You now have the skill brackets and character-level caps. Choose the route that suits your Rogue: keep practicing in the world, get help with the repeated locks, or plan character leveling before pushing for 300.
How to Learn Pick Lock and Use Thieves’ Tools
- At character level 16, speak to a Rogue trainer. Learn Pick Lock and take the faction-specific Rogue practice quest when available. Class trainers in major cities are a reliable starting point.
- Carry Thieves’ Tools. They are reusable, not a stack of consumables. The introductory quest can provide a set; if you have misplaced it, look for a Rogue or poison supplies vendor. Do not put the tools in your bank before a practice run.
- Put Pick Lock on your action bar. Activate it and select the lock you want to open. For a junkbox in your inventory, use Pick Lock on the item, then open the unlocked box to take the contents.
- Watch your Skills window. If your Lockpicking is already at the level-dependent maximum, you need character levels, not a different trainer. If the lock is too difficult, build actual skill on easier locks first.
- Practice on a range of locks. Opening a lock can raise skill; simply looting a box afterward does not. Opening a door with its key or another player’s skeleton key is not a substitute for using your own Pick Lock.
The initial lockpicking quests overlap with the class’s early poison progression but do not replace it. A Rogue who can open a practice chest still needs to complete any separate class-quest objectives to receive those rewards.
Alliance Lockpicking Quest: Redridge Rendezvous and Alther’s Mill
The Alliance starter chain gives you the first controlled place to practice before moving into world footlockers.
- Visit Renzik “The Shiv” in Stormwind’s Old Town and take Redridge Rendezvous when eligible.
- Travel to Lucius at the Lakeshire docks in Redridge Mountains. Turn in the introduction and take Alther’s Mill. You can receive Thieves’ Tools for the quest.
- Go north of Lake Everstill to Alther’s Mill. Open the small Practice Lockboxes repeatedly while your character level and skill allow progress.
- At 25 Lockpicking, open Lucius’s Lockbox near the mill (around
/way 47.0 44.7), collect the Token of Thievery and return it to Lucius for the quest hand-in. - Stay for additional skill points if the training boxes remain useful, then move to Wetlands, Ashenvale or another area in the quick-route table.
If the mill is crowded or dangerous: hostile spiders can interrupt lockpicking at low levels. Clear the room with a friend or return at a higher level. The Horde ship near Ratchet is also a separate practice location, though the trip is longer for Alliance characters.
Horde Lockpicking Quest: Wrenix of Ratchet and Plundering the Plunderers
Horde Rogues usually begin through the Shattered Hand quest contacts in Orgrimmar and finish their training at a pirate ship in The Barrens.
- Follow your early Rogue class quests to Shenthul in Orgrimmar’s Cleft of Shadow. Depending on where you began, the invitation can come through Undercity or Razor Hill.
- Speak with Zando’zan and follow Wrenix of Ratchet to Wrenix the Wretched at Ratchet.
- Accept Plundering the Plunderers. Interact with Wrenix’s Gizmotronic Apparatus near him to collect the Thieves’ Tools and the quest item E.C.A.C.
- Head south of Ratchet to the pirate vessel Tide Razor. Go below deck and practice opening the Buccaneer’s Strongboxes. Use these practice objects for routine skill-ups.
- For the quest objective, open The Jewel of the Southsea, confront the parrot Polly, use E.C.A.C. on it, and collect the Southsea Treasure before returning to Wrenix.
Important for Horde Skyborne Rogues: beta testers reported an issue in which the Gizmotronic Apparatus failed to provide Thieves’ Tools or E.C.A.C. Later guides describe a fix, but an old beta report alone does not prove a problem in your current client. Confirm both items are present before sailing. You can replace missing Thieves’ Tools from a vendor, but the special E.C.A.C. is part of the quest and cannot be replaced by a normal toolkit.
Opening the quest chest again can trigger Polly rather than giving you a quiet practice lock. Stick to the Buccaneer’s Strongboxes for repetitive training.
Lockpicking 90–150: Zoram Strand, Wetlands, Stonetalon or Hillsbrad
From the starter locations, choose the nearest area with enough usable footlockers. There is no reason to follow one faction’s zone order if your questing route is already somewhere else. These areas contain locks with different minimum skill requirements, commonly 70 and 110; a box requiring 110 will not open merely because your intended route starts at 90.
- The Zoram Strand, Ashenvale: search the western coastline for Waterlogged Footlockers. This is a natural Kalimdor option; keep an eye on breath and nearby enemies.
- Windshear Crag, Stonetalon Mountains: check Venture Co. camps for Battered Footlockers. Some mine-area locks are harder, so test nearby boxes before entering deeper.
- Wetlands: search murloc camps around the coast north of Menethil Harbor. Battered Footlockers of more than one difficulty can appear.
- Durnholde Keep, Hillsbrad Foothills: look through the keep while avoiding patrols. This option works well when your Rogue is already questing in the region.
If a footlocker is red or says your skill is insufficient, do not fight for that exact spawn. Move to a lower-requirement lock or use junkboxes from Pick Pocket until you can open the harder tier.
Lockpicking 150–200: Desolace and Angor Fortress
Two good alternatives cover this stage. Desolace is convenient for Kalimdor travelers; Angor Fortress in Badlands avoids underwater practice.
- 150–175: search the Desolace coast for Waterlogged Footlockers or the upper area of Angor Fortress for Battered Footlockers. Their usual minimum is around 150.
- 175–200: move down through Angor Fortress and use Dented Footlockers when you meet their 175 minimum. You may also continue on suitable Desolace locks if they still award skill points.
- Safety: coastal practice can require repeated dives. Surface frequently and avoid fighting while short of breath. Badlands is safer from drowning but has enemies and stairways that can disrupt a fast circuit.
These ranges do not require a new trainer or a skill book. If your Lockpicking stalls exactly at 175 or 200, check your character-level maximum before searching for another quest.
Lockpicking 200–250: The Slag Pit in Searing Gorge
The Slag Pit under The Cauldron is the main land-based location for the next bracket. You can enter through Searing Gorge and follow the tunnels where Dented Footlockers appear.
- For 200–225, stay in the lower parts of The Slag Pit and open the easier Dented Footlockers you can reach safely.
- Once your actual skill reaches 225, include the harder locks in the upper section. Keep checking tooltips rather than assuming every footlocker has the same requirement.
- Use Pick Pocket on suitable humanoids while traveling between locks. Save any eligible Sturdy Junkboxes and open them between circuits.
- When competition is high, clear or avoid nearby mobs, move to another section, or take a break and unlock the boxes you have collected instead of waiting beside one spawn.
Going into higher-level terrain too early can slow you down more than it helps. The best lock is one you can repeatedly reach and open without being forced into a dangerous fight.
Lockpicking 250–300: Heavy Junkboxes and Blackrock Depths
At 250, the final bracket opens up because you can pick Heavy Junkboxes. Pick Pocket high-level humanoids while questing or exploring Blackrock Depths, then unlock the boxes you collect. This is a flexible way to progress without relying on a single world footlocker spawn.
From around 280, Blackrock Depths offers another option: pick accessible dungeon doors near the beginning of the instance and, when safely reachable, higher-skill Shadowforge locks. The following circuit is an orientation guide, not a guarantee that each door always gives a skill point:
- Enter Blackrock Depths through Blackrock Mountain; Stealth past or control enemies only where your Rogue can do so safely.
- Use Pick Lock on an eligible entrance-area door rather than opening it with a key.
- Follow the adjacent corridor to any other available locked door, checking its requirement first.
- If you can safely reach a Shadowforge lock, attempt it when your skill is high enough. Skip it when enemy pulls or access requirements make it impractical.
- When you have exhausted useful locks, leave and repeat at a legal reset interval, or switch back to Heavy Junkboxes. Dungeon lock reuse rules and instance limits can affect your progress.
Level and gear matter: reaching 250 skill at Rogue level 50 does not make Blackrock Depths a safe solo dungeon. Higher-level characters, group support, and a stash of junkboxes can be more efficient than trying to force a risky door route early.
Junkbox and Lockbox Skill Requirements
These are minimum opening requirements from the Forever/Classic lock data, not guaranteed skill-up intervals. A box can be openable but too easy to keep training on. Keeping a mix of locks is more reliable than saving dozens of one low-level type.
| Container | Minimum Lockpicking | Typical source or use |
|---|---|---|
| Battered Junkbox | 1 | Pick Pocket on lower-level humanoids |
| Worn Junkbox | 70 | Pick Pocket as targets grow stronger |
| Sturdy Junkbox | 175 | Pick Pocket on mid/high-level humanoids |
| Heavy Junkbox | 250 | Pick Pocket on high-level humanoids |
| Ornate Bronze Lockbox | 1 | Looted locked container |
| Heavy Bronze Lockbox | 25 | Looted locked container |
| Iron Lockbox | 70 | Looted locked container |
| Strong Iron Lockbox | 125 | Looted locked container |
| Steel Lockbox | 175 | Looted locked container |
| Reinforced Steel Lockbox | 225 | Looted locked container |
| Mithril / Thorium / Eternium Lockbox | 225 | Higher-tier looted containers; check each actual item tooltip |
You may also open another player’s lockbox. Ask them to place it in the trade window’s Will Not Be Traded slot, then use Pick Lock on that item. This is a useful social fallback for a capital-city Rogue and may earn tips, but neither the number of boxes offered nor any payment is guaranteed.
Pick Pocket While Leveling: Get More Practice Without a Detour
Lockpicking fits naturally into normal Rogue questing. Use Pick Pocket from Stealth on eligible humanoid enemies when it is safe, keep the junkboxes, and open them after a fight or while traveling. Pick Pocket itself gathers a box; using Pick Lock on the box is the part that can increase Lockpicking skill.
- Carry Thieves’ Tools and leave several bag slots free for junkboxes.
- Take the boxes that match your current skill tier rather than storing only low-level boxes for later.
- Use populated humanoid areas that overlap with quests or dungeon runs instead of chasing theoretical drop-rate charts.
- Do not assume every humanoid can be pickpocketed or every pickpocket gives a junkbox.
Combining ordinary leveling and junkboxes is especially useful when your current character level is about to cap Lockpicking. You can earn experience and build a supply of locks at the same time.
Does the Working Overtime Legacy Perk Help Lockpicking?
Yes. Blizzard describes Working Overtime as improving the chance to gain skill points in tradeskills, including class-specific skills such as Lockpicking. The perk can make a long practice session more forgiving, but it does not raise your character-level maximum or open locks that are currently too difficult.
Spend points based on your wider character plan rather than picking a perk just for the first few practice boxes. The WoW Forever Legacy System Guide owns the full perk trees, challenge points and allocation choices. Lockpicking here remains the skill-route guide.
Lockpicking Troubleshooting: Gray Boxes, Too-Difficult Locks and Missing Tools
| Problem | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Lock says Too Difficult | Actual skill is below the lock requirement | Switch to an easier practice box or junkbox; test the specific tooltip before traveling |
| No more skill points at your current value | Character has reached the level-based maximum | Check the Skills window and level the Rogue before continuing |
| Starter practice boxes look gray unusually early | Box color could be misleading; players reported this in the beta | Try an eligible lock while below cap; if no gains are possible, use another box type and report the current issue |
| Cannot activate Pick Lock | Spell not learned, missing Thieves’ Tools, or invalid target | Learn at a Rogue trainer, keep the tools in bags, and select a suitable locked object |
| Horde Wrenix quest has no E.C.A.C. | Quest item missing or an interaction issue | Confirm the active quest and interact with the apparatus; buying a normal toolkit does not replace E.C.A.C. |
| World footlockers are missing | Other players opened them or spawn/location is unsuitable | Change route or collect junkboxes through Pick Pocket |
| Dungeon door does not award another point | Lock is too easy or re-use / reset rules apply | Try a different eligible lock or Heavy Junkbox instead of repeating one door |
About the old gray-box issue: beta posts described practice locks displaying gray around skill 30–40 even when some players still gained points. That is useful troubleshooting history, not evidence that every current server has the same bug. Your actual skill gain, character cap and lock requirement are better guides than an old screenshot.
WoW Forever Rogue Lockpicking FAQ
Can other classes learn Lockpicking 1–300?
No. The reusable Pick Lock skill belongs to Rogues. Other classes can sometimes use crafted skeleton keys or Engineering charges to open certain locks, but those methods do not give them a Rogue Lockpicking skill bar.
At what level can I start Lockpicking?
Rogues normally learn the ability and take the early practice quests at character level 16. The skill cap grows by five for each character level, so a level-16 Rogue can reach a maximum of 80.
Do I need to train Expert or Artisan Lockpicking?
No. Lockpicking is not trained in profession ranks. Keep leveling your Rogue and opening eligible locks. At level 60, the normal maximum is 300.
Why are all the boxes at Alther’s Mill gray?
First check whether you reached your current character-level cap. If not, try eligible locks and watch actual skill gains, then use the Ratchet ship, Waterlogged Footlockers or junkboxes if the mill stops working for you. An early beta issue made some practice boxes appear gray before expected; its presence on a specific live client must not be assumed.
What is the best route for Lockpicking 250–300?
Start with Heavy Junkboxes at 250, preferably gathered from suitable humanoids while leveling. For higher skill, Blackrock Depths doors offer a second route when your Rogue can enter safely. Alternate between eligible locks and obey dungeon reset limits. There is no supported fixed number of picks per point.
Does Pick Pocket raise Lockpicking by itself?
No. Pick Pocket is a way to obtain junkboxes. You gain a chance to improve Lockpicking when you pick the locked box, not from the act of stealing it.
Can I open a lockbox for another player without receiving the item?
Yes. They can place the locked item in the trade window’s Will Not Be Traded slot. Use Pick Lock on it while the trade is open. This lets the owner keep the box and its contents.
Will Working Overtime let a level-50 Rogue reach 300 Lockpicking?
No. The Legacy perk can improve skill-up chances, but a level-50 Rogue still has a maximum of 250. Raise your character level before attempting to reach 300. For builds and general Rogue progression, use the Rogue Class Guide; for separate quest-reward weapons, see Class Weapon Quests.
