Rogue in WoW Forever is a pure melee damage class with three different ways to control the same Energy and Combo Point system. Assassination develops Poisons, critical strikes, Mutilate, and the Venom finisher. Combat focuses on reliable weapon damage, dual wielding, cleave, and recurring cooldowns. Subtlety emphasizes Stealth, control, openers, and a new Rupture-focused damage loop.
Forever also changes the shared Rogue foundation. Combo Points are less punishing when you switch targets, one-handed axes join the weapon pool, Sap becomes more reliable, and Poisons receive stronger support. This guide explains those class-wide systems and helps you choose a specialization without duplicating the detailed builds, rotations, stats, and profession advice in the individual spec guides.
Rogue at a Glance
Beta review: September 24, 2026. The current Rogue Talent Calculator is synced to level-20 starter builds, while its PvE and PvP presets remain level-60 theorycraft. Talent positions, values, weapon rules, and Poison tuning can still change during beta.
Rogue Strengths and Tradeoffs
Rogue rewards preparation, target control, and efficient Energy use, but its melee range and limited normal recovery punish careless pulls.
- All three specializations are melee DPS, so bad positioning or lost target uptime directly reduces damage.
- Energy mistakes are expensive: overcapping wastes regeneration, while spending too early can leave no resource for Kick, control, or a finisher.
- Normal self-healing is limited, which makes bandages, control resets, and careful pull size important while leveling.
- Stealth, Sap, Kick, Gouge, Blind, Vanish, and stuns give Rogue strong control over how a fight starts and develops.
- Combo Points are less punishing during target swaps than in original Classic, making interrupts and short control swaps easier to manage.
- Assassination, Combat, and Subtlety now have clearer damage identities around Poisons, sustained weapon damage, and Stealth plus bleed gameplay.
What Changed for Rogue in WoW Forever?
The main Rogue changes are class systems, not only new capstone talents. They affect every specialization and change how returning Classic players should think about target swaps, weapons, Stealth utility, and Poison upkeep.
| Change | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Combo Points survive a simple target swap | Switching to another enemy no longer immediately deletes the Combo Points stored on the first target. You can Kick or control another enemy and return without losing them, as long as you do not start generating Combo Points on the new target. |
| One-handed axes are available | Rogue can now use one-handed axes. Combat gets the most obvious benefit because Hack and Slash treats axes and swords as the same extra-attack weapon family. |
| Poisons remain a class system | Poisons unlock at level 20. Current Forever Rogue data also gives them Attack Power scaling and allows them to coexist with effects such as Windfury Totem and sharpening stones. |
| Sap is more reliable | Current Rogue ability data removes the old chance for Sap itself to break Stealth. That makes pre-pull crowd control more dependable for every specialization. |
These changes do not make Rogue a different role. Assassination, Combat, and Subtlety are still melee DPS trees. The improvement is that each tree now has a clearer damage engine while the shared utility feels less punishing to use.
Rogue Specializations: Which Spec Should You Play?
All three Rogue specs spend Energy to build Combo Points and convert those points into finishers. The main difference is what makes that cycle valuable.
| Specialization | Main Identity | Choose It For |
|---|---|---|
| Assassination | Poisons and fast Combo Points | Dual-dagger gameplay, Mutilate, poison pressure, and maintaining Venom later. |
| Combat | Sustained weapon damage | Reliable builders, weapon flexibility, cleave, and frequent offensive cooldowns. |
| Subtlety | Stealth, control, and bleeds | Openers, resets, PvP control, and later Hemorrhage plus Rupture interactions. |
Assassination Rogue
Assassination is the poison-focused path. Its early level-20 build still looks simple because the deeper mechanics are not yet reachable, but the full tree develops around Mutilate, Seal Fate, stronger Poison talents, and Venom.
Mutilate attacks with both weapons, generates two Combo Points, and gains extra damage against poisoned targets. Venom then spends Combo Points to create a temporary window with stronger Poison damage and higher Poison application chance. This gives Assassination a real rotation identity instead of relying only on passive poison bonuses.

Combat Rogue
Combat is the most direct weapon-damage path and currently the easiest general starter route in LepreStore’s level-20 guidance. Its early talents improve Sinister Strike, Eviscerate, Hit, and dagger support, so the tree already strengthens buttons the Rogue uses before its deeper mechanics unlock.
Later, Hack and Slash changes its benefit by weapon family: axes and swords can trigger extra attacks, daggers and fist weapons gain Critical Strike, and maces ignore part of the target’s Armor. Restless Blades then ties damaging finishers to shorter cooldowns, while Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush create stronger burst and cleave windows.

Subtlety Rogue
Subtlety keeps the strongest emphasis on Stealth, openers, control, Vanish, and Preparation. Forever also gives it a clearer PvE direction through Hemorrhage, Rupture, Serrated Blades, and Thousand Cuts.
Hemorrhage now prepares the target for the Rogue’s own Rupture rather than applying the old generic Physical-damage charges for the group. Thousand Cuts then lets Rupture ticks reduce the Energy cost of the next Hemorrhage or Backstab. That is a real bleed loop, although its final raid value still needs level-60 testing.

Energy and Combo Points Connect Every Rogue Build
Energy is the short-term budget for Rogue abilities. Combo Points are the longer decision: builders create them, finishers spend them. Good Rogue play means planning both at the same time. If you spend Energy down to zero without thinking about an incoming interrupt, stun, or finisher window, the problem is not only lower damage. You may also lose control of the fight.
WoW Forever makes target swapping less punishing. Combo Points stay on the original enemy when you briefly select a different target. That means you can swap to Kick a dangerous cast, use control, or check another enemy, then return to the first target without automatically deleting your progress.
The limit matters: if you begin generating Combo Points on the new enemy, the points on the old target stop being available. This is not the modern system where Combo Points simply live on the Rogue with no target relationship. The current Forever behavior gives you more freedom without removing target planning completely.
Rogue Poisons and Weapon Enhancements
Poisons unlock at level 20 and are part of the class rather than an Assassination-only feature. Instant Poison provides direct damage, Crippling Poison slows movement, Mind-numbing Poison slows casting, Deadly Poison adds a stacking damage-over-time effect later, and Wound Poison reduces healing.
Assassination invests deepest into Poison damage, but Combat and Subtlety still care about the correct Poison for the encounter. A fleeing quest enemy, a dangerous caster, and a healing PvP target create different needs. Do not copy one universal two-weapon Poison setup into every situation.
Current WoW Forever Rogue ability guidance also reports that Poisons can stack with Windfury Totem and sharpening stones. That makes weapon preparation more flexible than old rules where one enhancement often replaced another. Because this is still beta behavior, recheck it after major tuning or systems updates.
Stealth, Sap, and Rogue Utility
Stealth is not only an opener mechanic. It changes how Rogue approaches patrols, objectives, gathering routes, and dungeon pulls. Sap lets you remove an eligible humanoid from the pull before combat, and current Forever data removes the old chance for the act of Sapping to break Stealth.
Once combat begins, Rogue utility becomes a resource problem. Kick interrupts a spell school. Gouge creates a short pause when the target faces you. Kidney Shot converts Combo Points into a stun. Blind can buy a reset window. Sprint helps you reach or leave a target, while Evasion can keep you alive when physical attacks turn toward you.
Pick Lock, Pick Pocket, Detect Traps, and Disarm Trap are also part of Rogue’s class identity. They may not increase a damage meter, but they create dungeon shortcuts, extra loot opportunities, and utility that no talent calculator can summarize. The best Rogue player is not only the one who spends Combo Points efficiently.
Rogue Races in WoW Forever
Blizzard’s current WoW Forever race-and-class table allows Rogue on nine race and faction combinations. Both Skyborne factions can be Rogues: High Order Skyborne on Alliance and Windshaper Skyborne on Horde. This is separate from their faction-exclusive Mage and Shaman options.
| Race | Relevant Rogue Value |
|---|---|
| Human Alliance |
Perception helps against Stealth users, Will to Survive removes Stuns, and Sword Specialization adds Critical Strike while using swords. |
| Dwarf Alliance |
Stoneform removes and prevents Bleeds, Poisons, and Diseases for a short window, while Mace Specialization supports mace builds. |
| Gnome Alliance |
Escape Artist answers Roots and Snares, Eureka! supports short offensive windows, and Expansive Mind increases maximum Energy by 5%. |
| Night Elf Alliance |
Elune’s Light provides a temporary Critical Strike window, Shadowmeld adds another concealment tool, and Quickness improves movement and Dodge. |
| High Order Skyborne Alliance |
Wind Blessed adds 1% Haste, Walk on Air adds traversal utility, and Elemental Insight increases damage to Elementals. |
| Orc Horde |
Blood Fury increases Attack Power, Hardiness shortens Stuns, Axe Specialization supports axe builds, and Shatter Curse adds defensive utility. |
| Troll Horde |
Berserking increases attack speed, Rapid Regeneration restores Health, and Beast Slaying adds situational damage. |
| Undead Horde |
Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear, and Sleep, Cannibalize restores Health from suitable corpses, and Touch of the Grave can drain Health through attacks. |
| Windshaper Skyborne Horde |
Skysight adds movement speed, Wind Blessed adds 1% Haste, and Elemental Insight increases damage to Elementals. |
This table is a class-level comparison, not a universal race ranking. Weapon choice, PvE or PvP goals, control matchups, and specialization can change which racial is most useful. The spec guides handle those narrower choices.
Which Rogue Spec Should You Level?
For a straightforward level-20 starter, Combat is the safest current recommendation. Improved Sinister Strike, Improved Eviscerate, Precision, and other early Combat points improve abilities you already use. You do not have to wait for Mutilate, Venom, Hemorrhage, or Thousand Cuts before the tree feels relevant.
Choose Assassination if daggers and Poison gameplay are the reason you picked Rogue. The opening beta does not contain the completed Mutilate and Venom engine, so early leveling is less representative of the final spec. The reward comes later when Poison uptime and rapid Combo Point generation become central.
Choose Subtlety when Stealth and control are the main fantasy. It is playable at the current cap, but the full PvE bleed identity arrives deeper in the tree. Solo enemies also turn to face you after the opener, which makes position-dependent dagger attacks less convenient than Combat’s general-purpose loop.
Whichever path you choose, keep weapon skills current and prioritize meaningful weapon upgrades. Rogue damage is tightly tied to the weapons actually equipped, and an old high-stat item can lose to a stronger weapon that better supports your current builders.
Review WoW Forever leveling options up to level 60 for after launch. Choose a target range and check current service availability before ordering. This service does not bypass the beta level cap.
What Rogue Brings to PvE and PvP
In PvE, Rogue brings melee damage plus interrupts, stuns, crowd control, threat management, trap utility, and Stealth-based access. Combat currently offers the clearest sustained weapon route, Assassination develops poison-centered single-target pressure, and Subtlety is testing a more specialized bleed cycle. Final level-60 rankings need raid logs and completed beta tuning.
In PvP, the class is defined by control chains and choosing when to engage. Sap, Cheap Shot, Kidney Shot, Blind, Gouge, Kick, Sprint, Evasion, and later Vanish give Rogue several ways to create or reset a kill attempt. Subtlety naturally invests deepest into this style, but all three specializations keep the shared control toolkit.
Do not evaluate Rogue PvP only by a burst screenshot. Energy pooling, diminishing opportunities to control the same target, defensive cooldowns, and whether you can reconnect after a disengage matter just as much as the largest Eviscerate or Mutilate.
Planning Your Rogue Talents
Use the WoW Forever Rogue Talent Calculator after deciding which damage engine you want. Assassination builds around Poisons, Mutilate, Seal Fate, and Venom. Combat builds around weapon damage, Blade Flurry, Hack and Slash, finishers, and Adrenaline Rush. Subtlety builds around Stealth openers, Hemorrhage, Rupture, Preparation, and Thousand Cuts.
Do not judge a build only by its final 51-point split. Check whether the chosen weapon supports its builders, whether its secondary-tree talents actually improve the main damage loop, and whether the preset is a current level-20 starter or a level-60 theorycraft snapshot.
