World of Warcraft is 21 years old!
The game is older than some of the players! Nevertheless people keep coming to Azeroth every day to explore its secrets. This article will help newcomers and returning veterans settle in.
I will cover the process of downloading the game and choosing versions. I’ll explain addons, and try to help you pick your play style.
Go get a snack, we are starting right now!
Let’s start with some basics. World of Warcraft was released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. This is an MMORPG with a plot that takes place in a fantasy world called Azeroth. You create your character and adventures begin. You and thousands of other players fight enemies, explore dungeons, complete quests, and collect powerful loot! You can focus on the story or join a more competitive part of the game like PvP or Raids.
Over the years, the game has expanded. It has got new zones, characters and mechanics. Today World of Warcraft is one of the most iconic online games in history. WoW continues to grow and attract new players in 2025.
How to Get Started
Before you can play WoW, you need to Create an Account, Download Battle.net and log in. There you will manage WoW and other Blizzard games. Once everything is set up, find World of Warcraft in the list of games and Click Install. You will be asked to choose between different versions like Retail or Classic. More on that you will find in the section below.
World of Warcraft uses a subscription model. To unlock full access, you’ll need to buy game time but you can start with a free trial before paying anything. Once the game loads you will need to pick a server. Some servers are more populated than others, so choose the one you like more. Now it is time to create your first character!
There are two main factions in the game: Horde and Alliance. They are hostile to each other so choose wisely! Choose a race and class, customize your character’s appearance and enter your name. Hit Enter World, and let’s roll!
There are many expansions and players keep arguing about the best one. The thing is that there is no simple answer to that. It is all based on personal opinion and preferences. I’m not going to push you towards any expansion but just briefly explain them. Let’s start with the most modern one.
Retail WoW
Retail is what people call the most recent expansion in World of Warcraft. In 2025 it is The War Within. It brought new zones, a lot of seasonal content, Dragon Riding and much more! All the patches lead us to the next expansion called Midnight. The release date is to be revealed later in the year.
Retail WoW is the best option for newcomers. It has the latest content, modern graphics, and different gameplay options to choose from. You can play PvP or stick to PvE. Exploring and collecting is a thing here too! Retail WoW has a thing to offer for everyone!
Mists of Pandaria Classic
It was Launched on July 21, 2025. This version brings us back to the expansion called Mists of Pandaria Classic. If you want to see how things were going many years ago in MoP Classic then it is a great choice!
Overall players who haven’t played WoW a single day may find it slightly outdated and boring but as I said above I am not going to push you to any of the versions. You should make a decision yourself. Just download it and give it a shot! The only thing you need to play this Expansion is active WoW subscription.
20th Anniversary Edition
This is a special set of fresh start Classic realms launched in November 2024 to celebrate WoW’s 20th anniversary. Here you can feel the game like it is 2004 outside. All players begin at level 1 and progress through phases. In the future these realms will eventually transition into Burning Crusade Classic.
It is perfect for players who want to feel the game from scratch. But be aware of a lot of grind and some outdated mechanics! Players nowadays do not tend to spend so much time grinding boars and completing quests. But who knows, maybe this slow-paced gameplay is what you have been looking for all these years?
Season of Discovery
Season of Discovery realms is what people sometimes call Classic+. It is basically an improved version of Classic with modern game mechanics, abilities, and rebalanced classes. No new content is planned for now and SoD servers will remain online forever as they are.
Go and try Season of Discovery if you always wanted to see Classic but was scared of boring gameplay. Blizzard did some great job there rehauling Vanilla and bringing new life into it!
Hardcore Realms
Hardcore realms are a part of the 20th Anniversary celebration. They offer permadeath gameplay. Yep, roguelike in World of Warcraft! If your character dies, it’s gone forever.
These servers are definitely not for new players as every mistake is your last one. The gameplay is rough. But if you like it hotter, then you can give it a chance!
Addons in World of Warcraft are legal modes that can make your life easier. Some are just visual and others provide combat info. During the late gameplay some Addons are so important that players might refuse to invite you to raid or dungeon without them. For example Deadly Boss Mods (DBM) or BigWigs gives you warnings and timers during boss fights. Another Addon with a speaking name GTFO plays a sound when you’re standing in something dangerous.
There are many ways to install Addons but I will talk about the easiest one. There are addon manager apps like CurseForge or WowUp. Simply download and install one of them and link your WoW installation folder. Scroll through the list of addons it offers you and install those you like. All the process is automatic. Never download addons from websites you do not know, they may contain malware! Use CurseForge or WoWUp.
Ok, at this point you have already created your character and installed a few helpful addons. Now it’s time to start playing! Let’s take a look at what the game has got to offer.
Leveling
This is where all of us start. Before you can join the ranks of the best players you have to go through leveling, which is basically the time when you learn your character and game mechanics. The main idea here is to get from level 1 up to the current level cap. Level cap varies due to the version of the game you’re playing. The fastest way to do that is to complete quests and run dungeons. But as a new player do not forget about exploring zones! World of Warcraft contains thousands of easter eggs and the same amount of beautiful places! Play at your own pace, make your own mistakes and learn.
PvE Activities
PvE is the part of the game where you fight computer-controlled enemies. Sometimes players form parties or even raids to defeat strong monsters. The main idea here is focused on cooperative gameplay. Among PvE activities there are Dungeons, Mythic+ Dungeons, Raids, World Quests, and various Events. Leveling is usually also a part of PvE.
PvP Activities
PvP is a part of the game where you face real players. You can join PvP at almost any level, though it’s most active at max level. You can find PvP on Battlegrounds, Arenas and in Open World.
PvP and PvE offer very different challenges. Some players love both and you can switch between them whenever you like.
These tips are general and work for any World of Warcraft expansion. Remember, you are entering a new world, and the main idea is to enjoy the process. You are not obliged to follow any of the following statements. Ready to start?
1. Take Your Time
2. Follow the Story
3. Join a Guild or Discord Community
4. Use Addons and Guides
5. Set Small Goals
6. Play What Feels Fun
