How do you unlock Divergence Camo in Modern Warfare 4? Complete 33 Harmonic Break Camo Challenges, one for every weapon in the base MW4 roster. Divergence is awarded when the final Harmonic Break challenge is finished. There is no extra Divergence kill challenge after that.
The hard part is reaching those 33 completions. Every weapon has eight Military Camos linked to its weapon levels and three Special Camos with weapon-specific tasks. After those come Gold, Platinum and Harmonic Break. Gold is a weapon-by-weapon task, Platinum needs every Gold in the weapon class, and Harmonic Break does not become available until the Platinum challenges are complete across the base roster.
MW4 Divergence Camo at a Glance
How to Unlock Divergence Camo: Five Steps
- Level and unlock the weapon. Reach its eight Military Camo milestones and the levels that activate its three Special challenges.
- Finish the three Special Camo tasks. These depend on the gun: one may ask for headshots or mounted kills, while another asks for kills using a specific attachment or style. Then complete Gold with that weapon.
- Get Gold across an entire weapon class. Eight assault rifles means eight Gold unlocks before their Platinum challenges become available. The number is different for SMGs, launchers and the other classes.
- Finish Platinum across all 33 base weapons. Platinum has a class-specific challenge on each weapon. Until all those are complete, Harmonic Break remains locked.
- Complete Harmonic Break on all 33 weapons. These final weapon-class tasks are what trigger the Divergence reward. The 33rd completed challenge is the finish line.
Important: Gold and Platinum are not substitutes for the final requirement. Getting just one rifle to Harmonic Break does not unlock Divergence, and a new weapon reaching its maximum level does not bypass the camo challenges. Your Camo menu is the place to track which stage still needs work.
Choose How to Handle the 33-Weapon Grind
The most time-consuming steps are weapon unlocks, class prerequisites and repeated combat tasks. Pick the help that matches the part you still need, while keeping Divergence requirements separate from broader Mastery Camo orders.
All 33 Weapons Needed for Divergence
The requirement is based on the 33-weapon launch roster. That includes pistols, four launchers and one melee weapon; the project is not complete when only assault rifles and SMGs are finished. Here is a practical class checklist based on the published base weapon list.
| Weapon class | Count | Base weapons to complete |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Rifles | 8 | Han 86, M4, Hyeon Burst, Patriot XMR, Kastov 762, Oden, Axion, Cronen Squall |
| SMGs | 5 | ISO Nightshade, VEL 46, Wz.55 Striga, PPSh-41, X-58 Nyx |
| Shotguns | 2 | Rezi 12, Warlord |
| LMGs | 3 | FiNN LMG, Type 73, APOC-338 |
| Marksman Rifles | 3 | MAR-9, Oris 8.6, Mosin-Nagant |
| Sniper Rifles | 3 | KG-7 Vulcan, Astaroth .57, Signal 50 |
| Pistols | 4 | Sang 9mm, Krait P68, .50 GS, Mojave .357 |
| Launchers | 4 | PILA, RPG-8, JOKR, PM-40 Anvil |
| Melee | 1 | FSS Carbon Edge 1095 |
| Total | 33 | All nine classes must be included in the checklist. |
A simple way to manage the roster is to track four milestones per weapon: Special Camos done / Gold / Platinum / Harmonic Break. A completed Gold row still needs two more steps before it counts toward Divergence. The weapon list above follows the official MW4 launch roster.
Military, Special and Gold: Prepare Each Weapon
Military Camos are tied to weapon levels. Every gun has eight, but the level milestones vary by weapon, so do not assume one unlock pattern applies to your entire arsenal. Getting a weapon to its last Military milestone is not enough by itself for Gold.
Special Camos add three combat tasks per weapon. The conditions and the levels that unlock them can differ. For example, Activision’s Han 86 assault rifle examples include mounted kills, suppressed kills and a no-death objective. Special Camos earned through the shared progression join a pool you can use on other weapons, but that does not mean the Gold prerequisites for an unfinished weapon are waived.
Once its eight Military Camos and three Special Camo tasks are done, the weapon becomes eligible for Gold. The official progression guide lists the Gold objective as:
- Multiplayer: 15 eliminations with the weapon in a single match.
- DMZ: 100 eliminations with the weapon in a single match.
If you mostly play short matches and keep falling just short of 15, a respawn objective playlist with enough match time may suit you better. In DMZ, the larger target reflects the different enemy mix and pace; it is a distinct match objective, not a 15-kill requirement copied from Multiplayer.
Platinum and Harmonic Break Challenges by Weapon Class
The two big gates work differently. Platinum opens after Gold is finished for every gun of the same class. Harmonic Break opens after Platinum has been completed across all 33 base weapons. Then each weapon still has its own class-type challenge to finish. This is why the last forgotten launcher can stop progression across your entire camo project.
The table shows the Multiplayer objectives and reported kill counts for the base classes. Call of Duty’s official progression guide confirms each class’s objective type and gives detailed rifle examples; the other Multiplayer counts come from published camo challenge lists. For the exact total on your gun and mode, use the current in-game Camo screen rather than applying a Multiplayer figure to DMZ.
| Class | Platinum objective (MP) | Harmonic Break objective (MP) |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Rifles | 50 headshots | 25 double kills |
| SMGs | 25 kills from behind | 50 hipfire kills |
| Shotguns | 50 hipfire kills | Get 2 kills without reloading, 25 times |
| LMGs | Get 3 kills without dying, 15 times | Get 2 kills without releasing the trigger, 25 times |
| Marksman Rifles | 75 kills while prone | 75 one-shot kills |
| Sniper Rifles | 75 kills while prone | 75 one-shot kills |
| Pistols | 20 kills from behind | 40 hipfire kills |
| Launchers | Get 2 kills without taking damage, 15 times | Get 10 kills in one match, 7 times |
| Melee | Get 3 kills without dying, 15 times | 25 kills from behind |
Rifle example: For the Han 86, Activision confirms 50 Multiplayer headshots or 100 DMZ headshots for Platinum, then 25 Multiplayer double kills or 50 DMZ double kills for Harmonic Break. The requirements are not interchangeable between modes even though the camo you earn is shared.
Do not use older challenge lists that give the Shotgun Platinum objective as 125 hipfire kills without checking the Camo menu. Published launch-period lists differ on this number; the 50-hipfire Multiplayer objective is reflected in more recent listings. If you see a different counter, the displayed requirement is the one to follow.
An Efficient Divergence Grind Order
There is no universal fastest map or hour count for all 33 weapons. Your aim changes from weapon leveling to precise combat objectives, and some weapons are much less flexible than others. A practical order prevents having to redo matches merely because the next tier was still locked.
- Unlock your base roster first. Use the MW4 Weapon Leveling guide if you still need player-level unlocks or useful attachments. Weapon levels grant Military Camos and access to Special tasks, not all Completionist rewards.
- Work Gold in complete classes. For example, take all eight assault rifles through Gold before spending matches on Platinum headshots. The same rule applies to five SMGs and the smaller classes.
- Prepare loadouts for the next challenge. A low-recoil setup helps headshots; hipfire-focused attachments suit SMG or Shotgun tasks; stable sustained fire matters for LMG challenges. An all-round meta build is not always the best farming build.
- Do not postpone launchers and melee. These have their own conditions and can be less convenient than standard rifles. Start collecting their progress when an appropriate playlist or match situation appears instead of leaving all five until the very end.
- Finish all Platinum before switching to Harmonic Break. Check the camo screen for the full set. One missing Platinum blocks the final tier even if your favorite gun is already ready for it.
- Close the last 33 Harmonic Break tasks deliberately. Keep a simple 0-33 count with weapon names, so you can identify the exact remaining weapon instead of guessing why the reward did not appear.
For high-volume hipfire or double-kill tasks, close-range respawn maps may offer more repeatable attempts. For long-range weapons, pick sightlines where you can land the exact required shots consistently. The hosted-lobby camo challenge guide explains how to check eligibility if you want to farm Multiplayer objectives in a hosted session; a booking is not an automatic camo unlock.
Can You Unlock Divergence in Multiplayer or DMZ?
Yes. MW4 has a shared weapon camo track across the supported modes. A Special Camo completed in Multiplayer or DMZ joins the same camo pool, and the official examples show that some Completionist challenges can be finished wholly or partly through either mode. This gives you a real choice: the shorter Multiplayer requirement is not automatically easier for every player than the longer DMZ variant.
| Challenge | Multiplayer example | DMZ example |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 15 eliminations in one match | 100 eliminations in one match |
| Han 86 Platinum | 50 headshots against players | 100 headshots against enemies |
| Han 86 Harmonic Break | 25 double kills against players | 50 double kills against enemies |
Use Multiplayer when you need player-specific targets, tight bursts of action or a familiar respawn rhythm. Consider DMZ for enemy-heavy objectives that the Camo menu explicitly permits there. Do not transfer Multiplayer counts to DMZ: a kill against an AI enemy may qualify for a DMZ version of a task but not a player-only Multiplayer task.
Why Is Platinum, Harmonic Break or Divergence Still Locked?
Before assuming a camo counter is broken, identify the first locked stage. Most stalled projects have a missing prerequisite somewhere in the roster.
| What you see | Check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Gold is unavailable | Eight Military milestones and three Special tasks on that weapon | Open the weapon’s Camo menu and finish the missing task. |
| Platinum is greyed out | Gold on every base weapon of that class | Count the missing Gold unlocks in the class, including less-used guns. |
| Harmonic Break is locked | Platinum across the 33-weapon base roster | Review all nine classes, particularly pistols, launchers and melee. |
| Harmonic Break counter stays at zero | Active tier, weapon, mode and exact action | Use the listed task and compare its counter before and after a completed match. |
| 33 tasks look finished but Divergence is missing | One unfinished weapon, incomplete challenge or delayed Camo menu update | Read each Harmonic Break state and use the camo tracking checklist if everything is genuinely complete. |
Call of Duty’s release patch notes also describe fixes for missing camo counters and Camo menu tracking. A missing on-screen number does not prove your weapon earned a reward; comparing the actual stage and its prerequisite gives you a more useful diagnosis.
What Does Divergence Unlock Next?
Divergence is the gate to the first mode-specific Mastery Camo. It does not instantly award Orion Reforged, Helio or Empyros. Those are three different endgame tracks with their own requirements.
| Mode | Mastery route after Divergence | Detailed guide |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer | Mercurial Drift → Polyatomic Reforged → Orion Reforged | Orion Reforged guide |
| DMZ | Chiral → Ripple Tide → Helio | DMZ Helio guide |
| Warzone | Parallax → Damascus Reforged → Empyros (Season 1 track) | Warzone Empyros guide |
For the full cross-mode comparison, unlock order and the separate Weapon Prestige Pyroclast system, use the MW4 Mastery Camos overview. If your priority is the final Multiplayer finish rather than the Divergence checkpoint, LepreStore’s Orion Reforged service includes earlier camo and weapon-leveling work in its listed scope. That is a broader purchase than simply leveling a few guns.
