Mage Comprehension is a new minor tradeskill in WoW Forever. At character level 6, learn Comprehend Scroll from a Mage trainer, then use it on untranslated world-drop scrolls. Successfully reading suitable scrolls can raise your Comprehension skill from 1 toward 300 and turn them into useful one-time effects. The important thresholds are 1, 15, 50 and 175 Comprehension — these are skill requirements, not character levels.
There is a second system: after a Mage returns a Library Book, Research / Study can provide ready-to-use scrolls at a library using a Light Feather. Study is for obtaining consumables; do not rely on it to raise permanent Comprehension skill. This guide separates those activities, lists the decipherable scroll families, and explains useful results without claiming any guaranteed drop or launch-day economy.
Release context: Blizzard’s Mage Deep Dive confirms Comprehension, while the detailed skill breakpoints and effects below come from September–October 2026 Forever beta client data and reports. Beta testing has ended; the Level 60 launch is scheduled for November 4, 2026. The high-level scrolls, specific failure behavior and Research interface should be checked in the release client before you commit expensive materials or farming time.
How to Start Mage Comprehension
- Reach level 6. Visit any Mage trainer and learn Comprehend Scroll. It appears under General in your spellbook, not inside one of the Arcane, Fire or Frost talent trees.
- Loot an untranslated scroll. Look for an item whose name starts with Scroll: followed by strange words, such as Scroll: KWYJIBO. The tooltip identifies it as a scroll a Mage can decipher.
- Check your skill. Open the Skills pane and compare your permanent Comprehension value with the requirement on the scroll. A skill 50 scroll cannot be read by a Mage with skill 15 just because that Mage has a high character level.
- Stand still and decipher. Activate Comprehend Scroll, target the eligible item in your bag, and collect the resulting consumable. On success, suitable difficulty can increase the skill; the result itself is random.
- Keep tougher scrolls for later. Save higher-tier drops or trade them; do not vendor everything simply because your current skill cannot read it.
Blizzard describes Comprehension as a Mage-only way to decipher world drops in its Mage and Shaman class deep dive. There is no Season of Discovery Comprehension Charm shopping step in the documented Forever reading flow: use the trained Comprehend Scroll ability. If you need a class build rather than a scroll route, our WoW Forever Mage Guide compares Arcane, Fire and Frost.
Comprehension Leveling 1–300: Four Scroll Tiers
The efficient rule is to read the lowest-cost scroll that can still raise your skill. At each new threshold, move to a higher tier if you have the scrolls. Reading low-tier items beyond their gray point wastes materials. The ranges below are from Forever beta skill data; they are not a promise of one point per scroll.
| Permanent skill range | What to decipher | Skill color / stopping point | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–15 | Scrolls requiring Comprehension 1 | Yellow at 15; gray at 30 | Use early drops to reach 15; stop once higher-tier items are accessible. |
| 15–50 | Scrolls requiring Comprehension 15 | Yellow at 50; gray at 75 | Keep one low-tier backup only if the next tier is scarce. |
| 50–175 | Scrolls requiring Comprehension 50 | Yellow at 100; gray at 200 | Skill gains can slow after yellow; this tier is still the bridge to 175. |
| 175–300 | Scrolls requiring Comprehension 175 | Yellow at 250; gray at 300 | Use higher-tier world drops until the cap. Do not assume a verified stack count. |
Not finding enough higher-tier scrolls? Continue leveling and looting naturally, check the Auction House for undeciphered Mage scrolls, and compare prices before buying. Scrolls do not have a published fixed drop rate across all zones. A Scroll of Comprehension provides +15 temporary skill for one hour; it can help you meet a requirement briefly but does not permanently replace leveling. The temporary increase expires.
Choose Your Next Step
| Current problem | Practical next move | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| I need more Comprehension skill | Decipher eligible drops or buy cheaper untranslated scrolls as skill colors allow | Study bundles do not guarantee permanent skill increases |
| I want Study and ready-to-use scrolls | Return a Library Book, find the Research interface and bring a Light Feather to a library | The all-class library reward route is not the Mage skill-leveling route |
| I want a Coldflame Saber or Narpas Sword | Check the specific scroll and the required dungeon weapon before running that instance | A dungeon clear does not guarantee either drop |
| I want to reach higher-level enemies and zones | Use the Mage leveling route from 1 to 60 as content opens | Character XP and Comprehension are different skills |
Level Your Mage, Find a Weapon or Unlock Study
You can level Comprehension yourself by deciphering scrolls. If your next challenge is character access, a dungeon weapon or the first library turn-in, choose the path that actually solves it.
All Known Undeciphered Mage Scrolls by Skill Requirement
The nonsense title is not a recipe name. It signals a Mage-only untranslated item; the Comprehension requirement in its tooltip decides whether you can try it. The following names were recorded in Forever client databases. Individual spawn locations and specific deciphering results are not guaranteed by this list.
| Required Comprehension | Untranslated scrolls found in Forever data | How to use them |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Scroll: KWYJIBO · Scroll: CWAL · Scroll: CHAP BALK WELLES · Scroll: LOWER PING WHOMEVER | Start here after training at player level 6. |
| 15 | Scroll: WUBBA WUBBA · Scroll: VOCE WELL · Scroll: OMIT KESA · Scroll: STHENIC LUNATE | A new reading tier opens; save extras for the next skill-up session. |
| 50 | Scroll: UPDOG · Scroll: TOPAZ YORAK · Scroll: PEATCHY ATTAX · Scroll: SHOOBEEDOOP · Scroll: THAW WORDS | Often the longest skill stretch; watch for green or gray casts. |
| 175 | Scroll: DOST OREM · Scroll: FORGOT HOOF THUD · Scroll: KEEP CLEF FOCI · Scroll: RARE SERVICHI RADAR | The high tier documented in beta client data; full access follows Level 60 release progression. |
You can compare an example untranslated item, Scroll: KWYJIBO, with the already deciphered Scroll of Rat Familiar. In your bags, the Scroll: [strange phrase] format identifies the item you read; a Scroll of [effect] is generally a finished consumable. This difference helps when filtering the Auction House or clearing bag space.
Mage Scroll Effects: What Can Deciphering Produce?
The output is random within the available tier pool. The scroll catalog below groups documented effects by the Comprehension tier they are associated with, not by a guaranteed source for a particular nonsense scroll. Some resulting items have their own character-level requirement in addition to the skill used to decipher the input. Always check the finished item tooltip.
Tier 1 — Basic Effects (Comprehension 1)
| Deciphered scroll | What it does | Best practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll of Imbue Lesser Flame | Adds a temporary Fire-damage bonus to an equipped staff (up to +4 spell damage). | Low-level staff-wielding Fire Mage. |
| Scroll of Imbue Chillknife | Adds a chance for dagger strikes to chill their target. | Melee experiments rather than a main ranged rotation. |
| Scroll of Rat Familiar | Summons a rat familiar granting +2 Intellect for about one hour. | A simple caster buff when you have nothing stronger. |
| Scroll of Minor Evocation | Restores 300 Mana over four seconds; 8-minute cooldown in beta records. | Occasional recovery, not a replacement for normal Mana planning. |
| Scroll of Comprehension | Adds +15 Comprehension for one hour. | Temporarily reach the next reading threshold. |
Tier 2 — New Buffs and Tricks (Comprehension 15)
| Deciphered scroll | What it does |
|---|---|
| Scroll of Imbue Frost | Temporarily improves Frost spell damage when applied to a staff (up to +8). |
| Scroll of Imbue Striking | Staff effect: damaging spells can trigger an additional Arcane Missile. |
| Scroll of Imbue Baleflame | Staff effect that reduces targets’ Fire resistance by 2. |
| Scroll of Imbue Iceknife | Dagger effect with a chance to freeze enemies when struck. |
| Scroll of Imbue Spark | Sword effect that can reset Fire Blast cooldown after a melee hit against you. |
| Scroll of Frog Familiar | One-hour frog familiar granting +6 Intellect. |
| Scroll of Confuse Beast | Weakens the physical damage dealt to you by a Beast target; beta tooltip lists 15%. |
| Scroll of Cryoblast | Short-range Frost damage burst within about five yards. Scaling changes as you level. |
| Scroll of the Saber | Transforms a specific Shadowfang Keep sword into a Mage-only weapon; see the weapon table below. |
Tier 3 — Utility and Weapon Options (Comprehension 50)
| Deciphered scroll | What it does |
|---|---|
| Scroll of Imbue Accuracy | Staff effect granting +0.5% chance to hit with spells. |
| Scroll of Imbue Quickening | Staff effect: damaging spells can accelerate wand attacks. |
| Scroll of Imbue Balefrost | Staff effect reducing the target’s Frost resistance by 3. |
| Scroll of Imbue Flame | Stronger temporary staff Fire bonus (up to +12 spell damage). |
| Scroll of Imbue Manablade | Dagger strikes can restore Mana. |
| Scroll of Khadgar's Unlocking | Magically opens a lock up to difficulty 125. |
| Scroll of Cat Familiar | One-hour cat familiar granting +12 Intellect. |
| Scroll of Rebuke Elemental | For a limited time, an Elemental takes 15% more spell damage from you; beta record limits targets to level 50 or below. |
| Scroll of the Blade | Transforms a specific Scarlet Monastery weapon; see below. |
Tier 4 — Higher-Level Scrolls (Comprehension 175)
| Deciphered scroll | Documented effect |
|---|---|
| Scroll of Greater Cryoblast | Stronger short-range Frost burst; late-game scaling must be checked after release. |
| Scroll of Imbue Greater Flame | Temporary staff bonus to Fire spells of up to +20. |
| Scroll of Imbue Greater Frost | Temporary staff bonus to Frost spells of up to +20. |
| Scroll of Imbue Precision | Temporary staff effect granting +1% critical strike chance. |
Separate unverified entry: Scroll of Wit appears in October Forever data and may relate to a weapon transformation, but its exact required Comprehension, acquisition and finished weapon are not established. It should not be treated as a confirmed tier-four result or a launch farming target.
Do not overvalue a scroll without checking your weapon. Staff enchants will not improve a dagger, and dagger/sword melee triggers are niche on a typical caster. A familiar is simpler for most levelers; an elemental debuff or specialty utility can be excellent for the specific situation. The WoW Forever Arcane Mage Guide, WoW Forever Fire Mage Guide and WoW Forever Frost Mage Guide own the corresponding spell rotations and talent builds.
Scroll of the Saber and Scroll of the Blade: Dungeon Weapon Upgrades
These two results are especially interesting because they change an actual weapon instead of granting a one-hour combat buff. You need both the correct scroll and the specific base weapon; the base weapons are dungeon loot, not something Study automatically creates for you.
| Scroll | Required base weapon / source | Result | Important restriction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scroll of the Saber | Blade of Silverlaine — Baron Silverlaine in Shadowfang Keep | Coldflame Saber | The scroll transforms the base weapon. Do not assume the drop is guaranteed. |
| Scroll of the Blade | Hypnotic Blade — Arcanist Doan in Scarlet Monastery | Narpas Sword | Requires its own base weapon and eligible use conditions. |
The Coldflame Saber drew attention because of melee-Mage experiments during beta, but it does not prove a new fourth Mage specialization or the best Level 60 build. If you need dungeon levels and entrance notes, use our WoW Forever Dungeons Guide before spending time on repeated clears. Neither this guide nor the Dungeon Runs service guarantees a particular base weapon or scroll drop.
How to Unlock Research and Use Study at the Library
Research is not the same ability as Comprehend Scroll. The first is a library-related unlock reported by Mage beta players. Comprehend Scroll comes from a Mage trainer at level 6. To pursue Research and Study, follow the separate all-class Library Book activity:
- Find one valid Library Book. A single book should be enough for the reported Mage-specific research unlock; it need not be a particular milestone reward.
- Turn it in to your faction librarian. Alliance: Garion Wendell inside Stormwind’s Mage Tower / Wizard’s Sanctum. Horde: Owen Thadd in Undercity’s Magic Quarter.
- Check your spellbook and profession interface. Beta reports show a Research unlock and a Comprehension profession tab containing the Study recipe. If one window appears empty, check the other before assuming the unlock failed.
- Bring one Light Feather to the library. In the documented beta client, Study uses one Light Feather, takes around six seconds and has a one-hour cooldown.
- Cast Study and open the Bundle. The result is a Bundle of Scrolls with random ready-to-use Mage scrolls. It does not guarantee a specific buff, rare transformation scroll or permanent Comprehension skill-up.
For precise book locations, the fastest first-ten routes and all-class reward milestones, see our WoW Forever Library Books Guide. Study is an extra Mage benefit from making the trip; it does not change which player receives the Library Book necklace, ring or later reward.
Location check: beta guides confirm the Stormwind Mage Tower and the inner Magic Quarter of Undercity as suitable study locations. If Study says you must be in a library, step further inside the proper building/area. A datamined Library Shelf campsite tool may create additional study locations, but its reliable acquisition path has not been confirmed; do not build your farming route around having it. Our WoW Forever Camping Guide owns the broader campfire profession system.
Why Mage Comprehension or Research Is Not Working
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| My scroll is red or I cannot target it | Your Comprehension skill is below the item’s requirement, or it is already a finished consumable. | Check the required skill on Scroll: [name]; do not use its character level as a substitute. |
| I read scrolls but get no permanent skill-ups | They are too low-level for your current skill, or the skill-up chance did not trigger. | Try a scroll from a newer requirement tier; compare yellow/gray thresholds. |
| The cast failed and my Mage changed form | Beta players reported occasional reading failures and temporary sheep transformation. | Wait out the effect and inspect whether the undeciphered scroll remains; do not treat one failure as permanent loss. |
| I cannot find Research or Study after logging back in | Blizzard listed a beta bug preventing Mages who learned Research from accessing it. | Check General and the Comprehension profession tab, and test in the release client. No universal workaround has been verified. |
| Study says I need a library | You are outside its limited usable area. | Try the Wizard’s Sanctum / inner Undercity Magic Quarter rather than standing at the city gates. |
| Study says I need materials or is unavailable | Missing Light Feather, active cooldown or incomplete unlock. | Check the reagent, actual tooltip cooldown and Library Book completion. |
| The scroll works but gives no spell damage | Weapon type does not match the imbue, or it is a specialized melee effect. | Read the staff/dagger/sword restriction and equip the matching weapon first. |
Known beta issue: Blizzard explicitly listed “Mages who learn Research can be prevented from accessing it” and a separate problem with Scroll of Liminal Passage. As of the October beta documentation we checked, there was no verified universally working fix. Do not delete characters, buy a replacement scroll or re-run a long book route on the assumption that this solves it. Recheck the latest Blizzard notes and report a reproducible issue if it persists after November 4.
The Scroll of Liminal Passage has a party-member teleport description in the Forever item database, but Blizzard listed it as not functioning correctly in beta. It is not a dependable launch travel shortcut until retested. For normal travel between cities, use the WoW Forever Travel Guide instead.
Which Mage Scrolls Should You Keep?
Bag space is limited, and the most expensive-looking scroll is not always the most useful. Make this choice based on what you can actually equip and what content you are doing.
| Your goal | Keep first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary solo questing | Best available Rat, Frog or Cat Familiar; staff imbue matching your school | Easy Intellect or spell-support effect without changing your normal rotation. |
| Crowded pulls | Cryoblast or Greater Cryoblast for situational close-range damage | An extra option when enemies reach melee range; not a substitute for Frost Nova and careful pulling. |
| Mana-heavy stretches | Minor Evocation or a suitable weapon imbue | Use recovery strategically; the scroll cooldown and actual item levels still apply. |
| Utility and lock access | Khadgar’s Unlocking | Useful when a lock of sufficient difficulty blocks a practical next step. |
| Collecting unique weapons | Saber or Blade transformation scroll | Keep the matching dungeon base weapon, rather than trying the transformation on any sword. |
| Training efficiently | Undeciphered scrolls whose requirements still allow skill-ups | Sell or bank scrolls you cannot use soon; keep enough bag slots for ordinary loot. |
One sensible approach is to decipher normal world drops as you level instead of making Comprehension a separate all-day farm. Save the occasional good effect for a dungeon, elite pull or difficult quest. The system rewards experimentation, but no Scroll of Wit transformation, scroll drop rate or endgame best-in-slot ranking should be stated as confirmed before release testing.
WoW Forever Mage Comprehension FAQ
At what level can a Mage learn Comprehension?
From character level 6 according to current Forever beta guides. Learn Comprehend Scroll from a Mage trainer and check the General spellbook tab. This is a separate skill from Arcane, Fire and Frost talents.
What is the maximum Comprehension skill?
Forever beta-client data supports a maximum of 300, with eligible untranslated-scroll requirements at 1, 15, 50 and 175. It is a skill value, not a requirement to reach character level 300.
Does Study raise Mage Comprehension?
The documented Study craft gives a Bundle of Scrolls rather than an ordinary deciphering skill-up. Treat it as a way to obtain finished effects, not a guaranteed permanent leveling technique.
Do I need Comprehension Charms as in Season of Discovery?
No charm-purchase step is part of the documented Forever flow. The current class ability is Comprehend Scroll; Season of Discovery recipes and charm costs do not automatically transfer.
Where can I find Scroll: KWYJIBO and other untranslated scrolls?
Untranslated scrolls are world drops reported from creatures while questing and running dungeons. Sources do not establish one universal best farming location or a guaranteed drop rate, so collect naturally and compare auction prices.
How do I unlock Mage Research?
Beta guides report that your first successful Library Book turn-in to Garion Wendell or Owen Thadd unlocks Research and the Study route. Blizzard documented a beta access bug, so confirm the active release-client behavior.
Why did my Research ability disappear after relogging?
This matches an October beta known issue acknowledged by Blizzard. Check your spellbook and profession tab; no universally verified recovery path was available before launch.
Can a non-Mage decipher Forever scrolls?
No. Comprehension and Comprehend Scroll are Mage-specific. Other classes can collect and turn in Library Books for shared rewards, but they cannot use the Mage decoding skill.
How do I get the Coldflame Saber?
You need Scroll of the Saber and the Blade of Silverlaine from Shadowfang Keep. These are separate item prerequisites; neither the drop nor the scroll is guaranteed.
Will high-level scrolls work at the November 4 launch?
They are documented in the Forever database, and higher-level progression is scheduled for the Level 60 launch. Exact live availability, balance and any new fixes must be verified after launch rather than treated as beta-tested facts.
A Practical Mage Scroll Progression Plan
Start at 6 by learning Comprehend Scroll and deciphering suitable low-tier drops. At 15 and 50 Comprehension, switch to the next eligible group to avoid gray-scroll waste. Turn in an early Library Book when your route passes a faction library, and use Study if it is accessible in your current client. At 175 skill, save and read the high-tier scrolls as Level 60 content becomes available.
For a full character route, continue with the WoW Forever Leveling Guide 1–60; for the first book and its coordinates, open the Library Books Guide. Treat scrolls as valuable side progression rather than a replacement for class spells, talents, items or safe Mana management.
