Midnight Season 2 changes what efficient gearing looks like in World of Warcraft. The Season 1 strategy of spamming Mythic+ and spending Nebulous Voidcores on random dungeon loot is losing a lot of its value. Heroic raiding, targeted raid rolls, crafted gear, and even early Mythic raid pugs are moving much higher on the priority list.

This guide covers the biggest WoW Midnight Season 2 gearing changes in Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek, including the new raid Great Vault rewards, Voidcore bonus rolls, Mythic+ strategy, Myth track item levels, crest spending, and a low-effort method for preparing alts.

Updated: July 29, 2026. Based on Blizzard’s current Patch 12.1 reward rules and the announced August release schedule.

WoW Midnight Season 2 Release Schedule

Date Release Available Content
August 11, 2026 Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek The Coiled Isle campaign, outdoor activities, regular Delves, Prey, Altar of Fangs up to Heroic, and Season 2 Mythic 0 dungeons
August 18, 2026 Midnight Season 2 The Venomous Abyss raid, Mythic+, Bountiful Delves, higher Lair difficulties, rated PvP, and the full Season 2 reward system

The August 11 patch week is effectively a preparation week. The new raid and Mythic+ season will not be active yet, but Mythic 0 dungeons will be available and can drop Champion 1/6 gear at item level 292. A Mythic 0 world tour is still worth doing, especially on characters entering the patch in weaker Season 1 gear.

Do not treat that week like the real gearing race. Save your serious time investment for August 18, when the raid, Mythic+, Bountiful Delves, and full Great Vault progression begin.

Midnight Season 2 Gearing Changes: TLDR

Season 1 Habit Season 2 Change Better Strategy
Spam one Mythic+ dungeon and roll repeatedly Dungeon rolls still pull from a large and random loot pool Take a Voidcore from a weak Vault and target a raid boss with a smaller loot table
Ignore Heroic raid after early progression Heroic raid Vault rewards and Voidcore rolls give Myth 1/6 items Keep clearing Heroic bosses that drop your weapons, trinkets, tier slots, or cantrip gear
Spend most Myth crests on random Vault gear Mythic raid Vault and Voidcore items can arrive at Myth 6/6 Use spare crests on crafted pieces or targeted Heroic raid rewards
Leave alts inactive until catch-up starts Voidcores are available as a Great Vault alternative from Week 1 Unlock a small Vault every week and bank Voidcores for later raid targeting

The short explanation is simple: raid loot becomes easier to target, while Mythic+ loot stays broad and random. Mythic+ remains excellent for crests, repeatable gear, rating, and filling the dungeon row of the Great Vault. It is no longer the obvious place to spend every Voidcore.

Heroic Raiding Is Much More Valuable in Midnight Season 2

Heroic raiding receives the biggest practical upgrade in the new gearing system. A Heroic boss still drops Hero-track gear directly, but the same boss can now produce Myth 1/6 gear through the Great Vault or a Nebulous Voidcore roll.

That puts Heroic raid reward quality on the same starting Myth track as a high-end Mythic+ Great Vault item. The difference is that raid bosses have fixed, smaller loot tables filled with raid-specific weapons, trinkets, tier pieces, and special-effect armor.

Heroic Raid Vault Rewards Start at Myth 1/6

Completing Heroic raid bosses can now place Myth 1/6 versions of their loot in your Great Vault. At the current Season 2 item levels, that means an item starts at item level 318 and can be upgraded to Myth 6/6 at item level 334.

Killing four Heroic bosses unlocks two raid choices in the Great Vault. Those options come from the bosses your character has defeated, giving you a much cleaner reward pool than a dungeon row filled with items from several Mythic+ instances.

Best for: weapons, trinkets, tier slots, cantrip armor, and raid items with unusual stat combinations.

Heroic Raid Voidcore Rolls Also Give Myth Gear

Nebulous Voidcore rolls follow the same reward logic as the raid Great Vault. Spending a Voidcore on a Heroic boss gives a Myth 1/6 version of an eligible item rather than a normal Hero-track boss drop.

This matters because you choose the boss. A dungeon roll can pull from a large collection of armor, jewelry, weapons, and trinkets. A raid boss may have only two or three eligible items for your current loot specialization.

For example, a healer targeting a specific ring from a boss with only a ring and boots in its eligible loot pool has much better odds than rolling a Mythic+ dungeon containing ten or more possible rewards.

Raid Bonus Rolls Now Cost One Voidcore

Rolling a raid boss cost two Nebulous Voidcores in Season 1. In Midnight Season 2, the cost drops to one Voidcore per raid roll, matching the Mythic+ cost.

That removes one of the main reasons players preferred dungeon rolls. When both activities cost the same currency, the boss with the smaller and stronger loot table usually wins.

Raid boss loot remains locked to the weekly reset, but Voidcore attempts are separate from the normal boss drop. Once you have access to the encounter, repeated kills can be used to spend additional rolls on the same target.

Midnight Season 2 Raid Vault and Bonus Roll Rewards

Raid Difficulty Direct Boss Loot Great Vault / Voidcore Starting Item Level
Raid Finder Veteran track Champion 1/6 292
Normal Champion track Hero 1/6 305
Heroic Hero track Myth 1/6 318
Mythic Myth track Myth 6/6 334
Mythic Final Two Bosses / Very Rare Myth 9 equivalent Myth 9 equivalent 344

This table explains why Heroic raiding moves so far up the gearing list. It gives non-Mythic raiders access to Myth-track versions of raid-exclusive items, while Mythic raiders receive fully upgraded weekly rewards without spending crests.

Why the Last Two Venomous Abyss Bosses Matter

The Coiled Altar and Ula’tek sit in a separate reward category on Mythic difficulty. Their eligible Mythic loot, along with designated Very Rare items, can reach the Myth 9 equivalent at item level 344. Standard Myth 6/6 gear stops at item level 334.

Heroic versions of those items do not receive the extra ten item levels. A Heroic Vault reward or Heroic Voidcore roll still starts at Myth 1/6 and caps at item level 334 after upgrading.

That does not make Heroic rolls bad. An item can be best in slot because of its effect, not because of ten extra item levels. A powerful trinket, special weapon, cantrip armor piece, or unusual necklace can beat a generic item from an easier Mythic boss even when the generic item arrives fully upgraded.

Heroic Gives Access to the Effect

A Mythic+ player may never defeat the final Venomous Abyss bosses on Mythic. A Heroic kill still allows that player to target the same item effect at Myth 1/6 and upgrade it to 334.

That is a real gearing path for raid-exclusive best-in-slot items. You lose the Mythic-only item-level bonus, but you still receive the proc, equip effect, stat profile, sockets, or interaction that makes the item desirable.

Mythic Raiders May Target Late-Boss Gear Early

Mythic progression guilds also need to think about Heroic rolls. A player progressing Ula’tek cannot loot Mythic Ula’tek gear until the boss is dead. Once the final boss dies, progression is effectively finished.

Spending several early Voidcores on the Heroic version can provide the important item during progression instead of after it. Receiving a 334 cloak from an early Mythic boss saves crests, but a 334 special-effect trinket or necklace from a late Heroic boss may add more actual power to the character.

Nebulous Voidcore Changes in Midnight Season 2

Nebulous Voidcores remain the Season 2 bad-luck protection system, but their acquisition changes. You can select a Voidcore instead of a normal Great Vault reward from the beginning of the season. The separate weekly source does not start immediately.

The First Eight Weeks Force a Vault Choice

For roughly the first eight weeks, the Great Vault is your regular Voidcore source. You must choose between taking one of the offered items and taking the currency.

That sounds painful until the Vault gives you three weak options. Instead of accepting a random sidegrade, you can take a Voidcore, kill the raid boss that drops your missing weapon or trinket, and make a targeted attempt.

The choice becomes especially useful after your character has collected basic Myth-track armor. Random upgrades lose value quickly. Targeted raid items do not.

The Weekly Voidcore Starts After Eight Weeks

After Orin Straylight completes his research, players will receive access to one additional Nebulous Voidcore per week. This should arrive around the Patch 12.1.5 period, although Blizzard’s confirmed rule is the eight-week research timer.

Season 1 eventually provided two weekly Voidcores. Season 2 reduces that supplemental income to one, so wasting early rolls on broad dungeon pools will hurt more.

Do Not Spend a Voidcore Just Because You Have One

Before rolling, check three things: the boss loot table, your selected loot specialization, and how many items from that boss would be genuine upgrades.

A boss with one best-in-slot item and five bad outcomes may still be worse than a boss with three strong outcomes. Change loot specialization when it removes an unwanted weapon or trinket from the eligible pool.

Voidcores can be saved. There is no reason to turn a useful currency into a random pair of bracers on Tuesday morning.

The New Mythic+ Gearing Strategy

Mythic+ is not dead in Midnight Season 2. It remains the repeatable source of gear, Myth crests, rating, and dungeon Vault choices. The change is narrower: Mythic+ becomes a worse place to spend targeted-roll currency.

Stop Rolling the Largest Dungeon Loot Table

The old alt strategy was to find a dungeon with several useful slots, run it repeatedly, and spend Voidcores until something good appeared. It worked because Mythic+ rolls had much higher relative value than Heroic raid rolls.

Season 2 equalizes the cost and raises the quality of Heroic raid rolls. A Mythic+ roll still gives a random Myth 1/6 item from a large dungeon table. A Heroic raid roll can give the same track from a carefully selected boss.

Use Mythic+ for what it does well: farm crests, collect repeatable drops, push rating, and unlock the dungeon Vault row. Use Voidcores where you can control the reward pool.

Take a Voidcore When Your Dungeon Vault Is Bad

A Mythic+ player may open a full dungeon row and see three random Myth 1/6 items with bad stats or low-value slots. Taking one because it has a small item-level increase is no longer automatic.

Take the Voidcore, clear the relevant Heroic boss, and target a raid item with a useful effect. Even a late Heroic boss can provide Myth 1/6 gear that upgrades to 334.

The best exception is obvious: if the dungeon Vault offers your actual best-in-slot weapon or trinket, take it. The new strategy is about avoiding bad random rewards, not refusing good ones.

Pug Early Mythic Bosses and the Season 2 Lair

Players who do not belong to a Mythic raiding guild can still kill selected Mythic encounters. Early raid bosses often become pug-friendly, and the new Lair system offers a flexible Mythic encounter for groups of 15 to 25 players.

The first Season 2 Lair is The Tidebound Grotto, where players fight Nymrissa Wavecaller. A Mythic Lair kill counts toward the raid section of the Great Vault and creates another target for Mythic-quality rewards.

A Mythic boss Voidcore roll gives a fully upgraded Myth 6/6 item at level 334. If the boss has three useful items for your specialization, spending several weeks targeting it can be far more efficient than repeatedly accepting random Myth 1/6 dungeon gear.

Best Gearing Plan for Mythic+ Players

Priority Activity Reason
1 Fill the Mythic+ Great Vault row Keep a chance at dungeon best-in-slot items and earn Myth crests while completing keys
2 Clear target Heroic raid bosses Unlock Myth 1/6 Vault choices and targeted Voidcore opportunities
3 Pug the Mythic Lair or easy Mythic bosses Create access to fully upgraded Myth 6/6 rolls
4 Take a Voidcore from a weak Vault Turn a bad weekly reward into a targeted raid attempt
5 Craft missing high-value slots Use crests that are no longer being consumed by every Mythic weekly reward

How Season 2 Changes Crest Spending

Mythic raiders may have the opposite problem from Season 1: too few items that need upgrading. A standard Mythic raid Great Vault reward arrives at Myth 6/6. A Mythic boss Voidcore reward also arrives at Myth 6/6.

If your weekly items are already fully upgraded, your Myth crests begin to pile up. Unless you receive a lower-rank direct raid drop, there may be nothing obvious to spend them on.

Crafted Gear Gains Value Again

Crafted gear lost some value in Season 1 because players were constantly spending crests on Myth-track items from the Great Vault and Voidcore rolls. Season 2 reduces that pressure.

With more weekly gear arriving at Myth 6/6, crafted pieces become a practical crest sink. They let you fix an empty slot, choose secondary stats, add an embellishment, or replace a bad raid item without waiting for another weekly reset.

Do not craft every slot immediately. Build around the raid loot table first, then craft the places where your character has no reliable boss target.

Heroic Raid Items Give You Somewhere to Spend Crests

A Heroic raid Vault or Voidcore item begins at Myth 1/6, leaving room for upgrades. Taking one of these pieces gives you a controlled way to spend the crests that fully upgraded Mythic rewards no longer need.

This makes the comparison less obvious than “Mythic boss equals better reward.” A fully upgraded generic item saves crests. A targeted Heroic item uses crests but may provide a much stronger effect.

Midnight Season 2 Strategy for Mythic Raiders

Mythic raiders should not automatically spend every Voidcore on the first boss they can kill. Early bosses give fully upgraded gear, but late Heroic bosses may hold the items that matter most during progression.

Compare Item Power, Not Only Upgrade Rank

Suppose an early Mythic boss offers a cloak, boots, and bracers at Myth 6/6. The final Heroic boss offers your best trinket, special pants, or a double-socket necklace at Myth 1/6.

The early boss saves crests. The final boss may add more damage or survival after upgrading. Run the simulation before choosing the convenient reward.

Target Gear You Need During Progression

Late Mythic bosses cannot help your progression until you kill them. Their Heroic versions can. This creates a strong argument for spending early Voidcores on the Heroic loot table while your guild is still working through the raid.

Players who receive little direct raid loot gain even more from this strategy. Instead of stockpiling crests with no item to upgrade, they can target a Heroic best-in-slot piece and immediately invest those resources into it.

Midnight Season 2 Alt Gearing Warning

The easiest Season 2 mistake is ignoring an alt for two months and then starting with no gear, no Vault history, and no saved Voidcores. You can avoid most of that problem with a small weekly routine.

Unlock a Low-Effort Great Vault Every Week

Complete a few easy activities such as four low-tier Delves and one Timewalking or weekly dungeon. The goal is not to gear the alt immediately. The goal is to unlock enough Great Vault progress to select a Nebulous Voidcore.

Repeat this each week while your main is progressing. When you return to the alt later in the season, it may have six, seven, or eight saved Voidcores instead of nothing.

Use Saved Voidcores on Mythic Pug Bosses

Two months into the season, the Mythic Lair and several early Mythic raid bosses should be easier to pug. Your alt can enter those groups, kill a boss once, and spend saved Voidcores on its loot table.

Each successful Mythic roll gives a Myth 6/6 item at 334. The alt skips the usual problem of obtaining several Myth 1/6 pieces and then needing a mountain of crests to upgrade all of them.

Do Not Spend the Tokens on Temporary Gear

Banked Voidcores are valuable because they compress weeks of gearing into a few targeted boss kills. Do not burn them on random dungeon armor that will be replaced as soon as you start raiding.

Prioritize weapons, trinkets, rare jewelry, cantrip armor, and tier-related slots. Generic wrists and cloaks can come from almost anywhere.

Midnight Season 2 Week-by-Week Gearing Plan

Period Main Character Alt Characters
August 11–17 Complete the Patch 12.1 campaign, unlock systems, and run a Mythic 0 world tour for 292 Champion gear Unlock the new zone and complete only the preparation needed for Season 2 activities
Weeks 1–2 Fill Vault rows, clear Heroic raid, identify priority bosses, and begin Mythic progression or Lair runs Complete enough easy content to unlock a Vault and take a Voidcore when no major item is offered
Weeks 3–7 Roll targeted raid bosses, craft missing slots, and avoid wasting crests on temporary items Continue banking Voidcores with minimal weekly activity
Week 8+ Collect the additional weekly Voidcore and target remaining best-in-slot raid items Use saved Voidcores on pug-friendly Mythic bosses or Heroic late-boss loot tables

Biggest Gearing Mistakes to Avoid in Midnight Season 2

Spending Every Voidcore in Mythic+

A dungeon can still have the item you need, but its full loot pool is usually larger than a raid boss table. Check the odds before rolling.

Ignoring Heroic Raid After the First Clear

Heroic is no longer a temporary stop on the way to Mythic+. Its Vault and Voidcore rewards can provide Myth-track versions of raid-exclusive items throughout the season.

Taking a Bad Vault Item for Item Level

A weak weekly item may save a few crests, but a Voidcore can become a best-in-slot weapon or trinket. Small immediate gains are not always worth giving up the targeted attempt.

Rolling Without Changing Loot Specialization

Your selected loot specialization changes which weapons and trinkets are eligible. A quick spec swap can remove a useless item and improve the odds of hitting the reward you want.

Leaving Future Alts Completely Inactive

A few easy weekly activities can bank months of bad-luck protection. Waiting until the alt is buffed or needed means giving up those saved rolls.

Best Midnight Season 2 Gearing Strategy by Player Type

Player Type Recommended Strategy
Mythic+ Only Player Fill the dungeon Vault, clear target Heroic bosses, pug the Mythic Lair, and spend Voidcores on small raid loot tables
Heroic Raider Keep clearing bosses that drop your best weapons, trinkets, tier pieces, and cantrip gear because Vault and rolls give Myth 1/6
Mythic Raider Balance fully upgraded early-boss rewards against powerful late-boss Heroic items needed during progression
Casual Player Use Mythic 0, Delves, Normal or Heroic raid, and Great Vault Voidcores without worrying about Mythic progression
Alt Player Unlock a small Vault each week, save Voidcores, and spend them once Heroic and early Mythic bosses become easy to pug

Final Thoughts

The biggest Midnight Season 2 gearing change is not the jump to item level 344. It is the transfer of value from random Mythic+ rolls to targeted raid rewards.

Heroic raid now offers Myth 1/6 gear through the Great Vault and Nebulous Voidcores. Mythic raid rewards can arrive at Myth 6/6, leaving more crests available for crafted gear and targeted Heroic items. The final two Mythic bosses still hold the highest item-level rewards, but Heroic gives far more players access to the effects that make those items best in slot.

Run Mythic+ for crests, rating, repeatable drops, and strong Vault options. Do not blindly spend every Voidcore there. Check the raid loot tables, use the correct loot specialization, and target the boss that has the highest number of meaningful outcomes.

For alts, start banking Voidcores before you plan to play them. A character with weak gear and eight saved rolls is much easier to fix than a character with weak gear and an empty currency tab.

FAQ

When does WoW Midnight Season 2 start?

Midnight Season 2 starts on August 18, 2026. Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek launches one week earlier on August 11.

What can you do during the Midnight Season 2 preseason week?

During the August 11 patch week, players can complete the new campaign, explore the Coiled Isle, run regular Delves and Prey, and complete Season 2 Mythic 0 dungeons. The Venomous Abyss raid, Mythic+, and Bountiful Delves begin with Season 2 on August 18.

What item level does Mythic 0 drop in Midnight Season 2?

Season 2 Mythic 0 dungeons drop Champion 1/6 gear at item level 292. This makes a Mythic 0 world tour useful during the Patch 12.1 preparation week.

What does the Heroic raid Great Vault give in Season 2?

Heroic raid Great Vault rewards start at Myth 1/6, item level 318. These items can be upgraded to Myth 6/6 at item level 334.

What does a Heroic raid Voidcore roll give?

A Nebulous Voidcore roll on a Heroic raid boss gives an eligible Myth 1/6 item from that boss. Raid rolls cost one Voidcore in Midnight Season 2.

What does the Mythic raid Great Vault give in Season 2?

Standard Mythic raid Great Vault rewards arrive at Myth 6/6, item level 334. Eligible Very Rare items and loot from the final two Mythic bosses can reach the Myth 9 equivalent at item level 344.

Should Mythic+ players use Voidcores in Heroic raid?

Yes, when the raid boss has a smaller and stronger loot table than the dungeon you would otherwise roll. Heroic raid rolls give the same starting Myth 1/6 track while allowing you to target raid-exclusive weapons, trinkets, and cantrip gear.

Is Mythic+ still worth doing in Midnight Season 2?

Yes. Mythic+ remains important for crests, rating, repeatable gear, and the dungeon Great Vault row. The main loss of value applies to spending Voidcores on its large random loot pools.

When do weekly Nebulous Voidcores become available?

Voidcores are available as a Great Vault alternative from the beginning of Season 2. Orin Straylight begins providing one additional weekly Voidcore after completing an eight-week research period.

How should you prepare alts for Midnight Season 2?

Complete enough easy weekly content to unlock a Great Vault and select a Voidcore. Save the currency until Heroic raid, the Mythic Lair, or early Mythic bosses become easy to pug, then target fully upgraded or best-in-slot raid gear.
