Should you take a Great Vault item or a Nebulous Voidcore in WoW Midnight Season 2? Take a strong item when it is a clear upgrade for your character. Choose the Voidcore when the Vault offers little value and you already have an eligible boss or dungeon loot pool worth targeting. Patch 12.1.5 makes that choice less painful: an additional weekly Voidcore is already available from Orin Straylight, so you can keep a good Vault item and still buy a bonus roll separately.
That does not mean every character should take the item. A Mythic raider who needs one specific trinket has a different decision from an alt wearing several weak slots. The valuable question is not what a finished BiS list recommends; it is what each option will do for your character this week.
Updated October 17, 2026 for Patch 12.1.5. Orin’s weekly Nebulous Voidcore exchange is live. Ascendant Venomstone drops and the seasonal Mistcrest cap removal are scheduled for the October 20 (Americas) / October 21 (Europe) reset and are not active yet.
Great Vault Item vs Voidcore: What Should You Pick?

The October 2026 rule: first compare the gear shown in your Vault. Then check whether you can afford Orin’s extra Voidcore. Only sacrifice a good item for the Vault Voidcore if the additional bonus roll is worth more than the guaranteed upgrade.
If you still need a stronger dungeon or raid Vault row, filling additional reward slots before the next reset improves your choices. Those activities can be done yourself or with a group; the existing LepreStore Vault-progress options are a continuation only after you know which row you want to improve.
Patch 12.1.5: You Can Get Voidcores from Two Sources
In early Season 2, the choice to take a Voidcore instead of a Vault item carried a bigger cost because the Vault was the principal source. That description is out of date. The additional weekly source unlocked during the week of October 6, before Patch 12.1.5 launched.

One source does not replace the other. A character eligible for both can potentially obtain two Nebulous Voidcores in a weekly cycle, but one requires giving up a Vault item and the other requires currency. The weekly purchase has a cumulative catch-up allowance for missed weeks; you can purchase previously available cores later, paying the cost for each.
How to Unlock Orin’s Additional Weekly Voidcore
- Find Decimus in Voidstorm and accept In the Catalyst’s Shadow.
- Speak with Orin Straylight by the Catalyst in Silvermoon City and start Prismatic Potential.
- Collect 10 Elementary Voidcore Shards from eligible Season 2 raid bosses, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves or Nightmare Prey Hunts. Quest progress is shared across your Warband.
- Return to Orin, finish the research sequence and complete Umbral Blessings of the Catalyst.
- Use the unlocked weekly exchange whenever you need another Nebulous Voidcore.

For a developed main, Veteran Mistcrests may be the least painful payment. For a new or returning character, spending upgrade currency too early could set you back more than the bonus roll helps. Check what your character still needs before picking the cheapest-looking price.
Important: the Orin purchase is not a free bonus roll and does not guarantee the item you want. It removes the need to sacrifice a good Vault item just to obtain some bonus-roll currency.
What a Nebulous Voidcore Actually Does
A Nebulous Voidcore buys one additional random loot roll after eligible Season 2 content. It is not a token you exchange for a named best-in-slot item. Bonus rolls are available after Season 2 raid bosses, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves and Nightmare Prey Hunts, when your character is eligible for loot from the activity. One bonus roll costs one Voidcore, including raids.
After eligible content, the Bonus Loot window shows the cost and your available currency. Hover over the Bonus Loot information to inspect the eligible item table before clicking. If a reward does not solve a real slot or the loot pool is poor, keep the Voidcore for another activity.
Duplicate Protection Only Counts Bonus-Roll Items
When you obtain an item through a Nebulous Voidcore bonus roll, that item is removed from the eligible bonus-roll pool until the pool has been exhausted. This lets repeat rolls narrow the possible outcomes. The tracking is separate by difficulty.
Receiving an item through an ordinary boss drop, dungeon chest or Great Vault does not automatically remove it from the bonus-roll pool. This is a common point of confusion. For example, having a trinket from a Heroic raid drop does not itself prevent the same trinket from appearing on a later Heroic bonus roll. Do not assume ordinary loot counts as a successful Voidcore roll.
Likewise, clearing the Heroic version of an item’s bonus-roll pool does not clear its Mythic version. A plan based on duplicate protection must specify the encounter, the difficulty and the remaining displayed loot pool. Also check your active Loot Specialization and the actual eligible items shown by the interface before spending.
Why a Small Loot Pool Can Beat a Larger One
Suppose one boss can offer three items your character can receive, and a dungeon can offer eight. If only one item matters to you, the boss has the simpler targeting problem. If the dungeon contains four valuable upgrades and the boss contains only one, the dungeon may be better even with a larger table. The point is not to chase the smallest number blindly; it is to maximize the number of outcomes that would actually improve your current gear.
Once successful bonus rolls remove eligible items from the pool, later rolls can improve your chances of finding what remains. Never treat the first roll as a guaranteed target, and inspect the updated pool rather than using a probability copied from someone else’s class.
Do Not Reject a Good Vault Item Because It Is Not Final BiS
A BiS list describes an ideal finished character. Your Great Vault asks whether an available item improves the gear you wear now. A weapon with imperfect secondary stats can still beat your current weapon by a wide margin. A non-BiS trinket can be useful for weeks if its effect is stronger than what you have equipped.
For DPS, compare actual upgrade options using Raidbots or a relevant class guide. Include your equipped items, current spec, talents, set bonuses and crafted effects. Healers and tanks should also consider survivability, healing profiles, cooldown coverage and encounters; an automated DPS percentage cannot judge every upgrade for those roles.
The 3% Now vs 4% Later Example
Imagine the Vault has a weapon that increases your simulated damage by 3%, while a perfect trinket from a raid boss could be worth 4%. Those numbers are not direct alternatives: the 3% is already in your Vault, while the 4% trinket still needs a successful bonus roll from its eligible table. That future item may take several attempts, during which you could be playing with weaker gear.
If that 3% helps you reach the next boss or higher key, taking it may also improve your future reward options. On the other hand, a nearly complete Mythic character with a small upgrade in the Vault and a well-reduced loot pool can reasonably choose another Voidcore. Progression speed and remaining targets matter more than a universal rule.
When Taking the Great Vault Voidcore Still Makes Sense
- No meaningful upgrade: all available items are sidegrades or downgrades, so the immediate opportunity cost is small.
- One critical missing piece: you have a realistic path to a specific raid boss or dungeon containing your weapon or trinket.
- The pool is already reduced: earlier successful bonus rolls removed eligible items on the difficulty you continue to farm.
- Long-season optimization: you will play enough to use the additional roll, and a small Vault upgrade does not solve current progression.
- Orin is not enough for your target: you have a strong reason to spend more than one core and are willing to pass on the Vault item.
If none of those apply, taking a displayed upgrade and buying Orin’s weekly Voidcore is often the more balanced option. You need not turn every weekly Vault opening into a high-stakes gamble.
Where Should You Spend Your Voidcore: Raid or Mythic+?

For reference, a Season 2 Heroic raid bonus roll and a +10 Mythic+ bonus roll can award Myth 1/6 (item level 318), while standard Mythic raid bonus rolls can be higher. Exact raid exceptions should be checked per encounter; do not assume the highest special boss reward applies to every raid boss, especially newly released Kith’ix.
The new one-boss Unbinding of Kith’ix gives raiders another place to evaluate loot, but do not spend a core based solely on the fact that the raid is new. Choose the Content Behind Your Next Upgrade
Once you have decided which encounter or dungeon can supply the item you need, choose a specific run or build the same Vault options yourself.
Venomstones and Mistcrests Are Separate from Voidcores
Patch 12.1.5 also adds Ascendant Venomstones, but they are not the same thing as Nebulous Voidcores. Voidcores buy extra loot rolls. Venomstones will improve eligible fully upgraded Season 2 Hero/Myth or maximum-quality Tidal Crafted weapons, trinkets and necklaces after Orin finishes his research. Blizzard schedules Venomstone drops and the removal of the season’s Mistcrest cap for the regional reset during the week of October 20.
The distinction matters to your Vault choice. A high-quality weapon or trinket already sitting in the Vault may have extra long-term value if it is eligible for the upcoming upgrade system. But do not reject every current item while waiting for Venomstones: the upgrade is still subject to the item’s track and full-upgrade requirement, and the material cannot be farmed before the unlock.

The Two-Minute Great Vault Checklist
- Open every useful Vault choice you can before reset; three unlocked rewards enable the Voidcore option, but more choices can also reveal a strong item.
- Check the best displayed item against your equipped gear, tier-set needs and actual performance, not just an abstract BiS list.
- Look at Orin’s weekly exchange. Can you buy a Voidcore without sacrificing important Mistcrests or other resources?
- Name your target. Which raid boss or dungeon would you use a Voidcore on, and can you realistically clear it?
- Inspect the bonus-roll loot pool. Count useful outcomes, verify difficulty and do not assume non-bonus items are protected against duplicates.
- Decide for this character and this week. Take the gear when its guaranteed value wins. Take a Vault Voidcore only when the extra roll has a genuine purpose.
This process works for a Mythic raider as well as a returning player. The answers differ; the questions stay the same. A character who already has most of their gear should not copy the plan of one who needs seven new pieces, and vice versa.
Great Vault and Voidcore FAQ
Should I always take a Voidcore from the Great Vault?
No. Take a meaningful confirmed upgrade unless the value of another targeted random roll clearly exceeds it. You can also get a separate weekly Voidcore from Orin after completing his quest chain.
How many Vault rewards do I need to unlock the Voidcore?
At least three, from any combination of Vault rows. You do not need three rewards in the same row.
How much does the extra weekly Voidcore cost?
Choose one payment: 5,000 gold, 2,000 Voidlight Marl or 100 Veteran Mistcrests. Missing a weekly purchase does not permanently remove the opportunity; the purchase allowance accumulates with the season.
Does a Nebulous Voidcore guarantee a specific trinket?
No. It gives a random eligible item from the chosen encounter or activity’s bonus-roll pool. Repeat successful bonus rolls can narrow that pool.
Does ordinary raid or Vault loot count toward bonus-roll duplicate protection?
No. The protection concerns items obtained by using Voidcores; ordinary boss drops, chest rewards and Vault items do not automatically remove the same item from the bonus-roll pool. Check the displayed pool before spending.
Should I save my Voidcores for Mythic difficulty?
