Protection Paladin is the strongest current WoW Forever tank at Level 30, with Protection Warrior and Feral Bear Druid close behind in A Tier. The difference is not viability: all three tanks can handle the PvE content available in the current beta. The ranking is about which toolkit currently combines threat, survivability, AoE control, damage, and group utility most cleanly.
This page ranks PvE tanking in the current Level-30 beta. It answers a different question from the WoW Forever Best Class Tier List, which compares complete class packages, and from the WoW Forever PvP Tier List, where tank durability matters differently because threat generation is not the goal.
The current bracket still cannot prove the final Level-60 raid meta. Deep talents, full gear sets, raid encounters, profession scaling, boss damage patterns, and tuning can all move these specs later. Use the ranking below to compare what the tanks can actually do now.
WoW Forever Best Tanks at Level 30 — Quick Facts
WoW Forever Tank Tier List at Level 30
| Tier | Tanks | Current Level-30 Read |
|---|---|---|
| S | Protection Paladin | The best current mix of AoE threat, damage, Mana stability, defensive value, and group utility. |
| A | Protection Warrior, Feral Druid | Both are strong, fully viable tanks with different strengths: Warrior leans into control and sturdiness, while Feral brings strong passive damage support and flexible utility. |
The current external benchmark is Wowhead’s Level-30 tank ranking for patch 1.60.1. Its methodology weighs survivability, damage and threat, trash/add handling, and group utility rather than simply asking which tank takes the least raw damage. View the current Wowhead Level-30 tank ranking.
How We Rank Tanks in the Current Beta
A tank is not only a Health bar. Level-30 dungeons reward the ability to establish threat quickly, control multiple enemies, survive dangerous pulls, and keep the run moving without forcing the healer or DPS to compensate for missing fundamentals.
- Survivability: mitigation, avoidance, emergency buttons, self-sustain, and how reliably the spec survives focused incoming damage.
- Damage and threat: whether the tank can keep enemies attached while still contributing meaningful damage.
- Trash and adds: AoE threat, target control, and how comfortably the tank handles messy multi-target pulls.
- Group utility: buffs, debuffs, auras, off-healing, battle control, and other tools that improve the entire party.
- Resource stability: how reliably the tank can access Rage or Mana when the pull becomes awkward rather than ideal.
If tanking is only one part of your class decision, use the Best Class Tier List instead. A class can rank highly as a tank and still be the wrong main if you dislike its damage, healing, solo, or utility options. For player-versus-player comparisons, use the separate PvP Tier List.
S-Tier Tank in WoW Forever
Protection Paladin
Protection Paladin is the current S-tier tank because its Level-30 package solves the most tanking problems at once. Consecration reaches rank 2, giving Paladin reliable multi-target pressure, while Holy-damage threat and Retribution Aura scaling make it unusually comfortable in dungeon pulls where enemies are hitting the tank continuously.
The spec also feels less constrained by Mana than earlier beta versions. More talent points let Protection invest deeper into shield and resource-support talents, while Templar’s Bulwark arrives as a valuable Level-30 defensive cooldown. The result is a tank that can create threat quickly, contribute strong damage, and still bring Blessings, Auras, emergency support, and the wider Paladin utility kit.
That does not make Protection Paladin flawless or automatically best at Level 60. Its current lead is a Level-30 snapshot, where Consecration, Holy threat, and Templar’s Bulwark line up particularly well with the available dungeon content. Start with the WoW Forever Paladin Guide if you are still deciding between Holy, Protection, and Retribution. Once tanking is the goal, the Protection Paladin Guide owns the current build, threat priorities, shield interactions, defensive choices, and deeper PvE planning.
A-Tier Tanks in WoW Forever
Protection Warrior
Protection Warrior is the most traditional tank in the current group and feels significantly more complete by Level 30 than it did at the opening cap. Revenge carries stronger threat, Thunder Clap can be used in Defensive Stance, and early Protection talents make the sword-and-board resource loop less punishing than old low-level Warrior tanking.
Shield Block is especially important. Its low cooldown and efficient Rage profile give Warrior a reliable defensive rhythm, while Sunder Armor, Revenge, Taunt, stances, and the broader Warrior control kit make the spec feel precise when the player is comfortable changing targets and managing Rage.
The reason Warrior sits in A rather than S is not that it lacks durability. Protection Paladin currently has the cleaner AoE-threat and damage package, while Warrior still depends more heavily on Rage flow, weapon quality, target contact, and active control. Use the WoW Forever Warrior Guide for the class-level choice, then the Protection Warrior Guide for current talents, threat management, mitigation, gearing, and later tank theorycraft.
Feral Druid
Feral Bear is also A Tier, but it reaches that result through a different package. Bear Form brings a large Health and Armor foundation, while the Feral tree adds better Swipe support, Primal Bite, mobility, and strong shared utility. By Level 30, Bear feels much more active than it did during the opening beta.
Thorns is a particularly valuable current-bracket advantage. With strong spell-power scaling, putting Thorns on the tank converts incoming enemy swings into useful free damage. Feral also gains Leader of the Pack at this stage, giving the group another reason to value the spec even when raw mitigation is not the only concern.
Feral’s main limitation is that the full Bear toolkit is not finished yet. Lacerate remains deeper in progression, and Swipe still lacks some of the later scaling that is expected to improve in future beta builds. That keeps Feral slightly behind the current Paladin package even though the spec is already a strong tank. Start with the WoW Forever Druid Guide if you value the option to move between Bear, Cat, Balance, and Restoration. The Feral Druid Guide owns the Bear build, weapon scaling, Rage priorities, tank gearing, and the Cat-versus-Bear tradeoffs.
Best WoW Forever Tank by Situation
| What You Want | Start With | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best current all-around tank | Protection Paladin | Strong AoE threat, high current damage, Mana stability, defensive value, and broad party utility. |
| Most traditional sword-and-board tank | Protection Warrior | Shield Block, Revenge, stances, Taunt, Thunder Clap, and active target control create a familiar tanking loop. |
| Strong defensive rhythm | Protection Warrior | Efficient Shield Block and improved Rage handling make Warrior feel sturdy when played cleanly. |
| Hybrid flexibility on one character | Feral Druid | The same class can tank as Bear, deal melee damage as Cat, cast as Balance, or heal as Restoration. |
| Passive group damage support | Feral Druid | Thorns and Leader of the Pack add party value beyond the Bear’s own threat and mitigation. |
| Easy multi-target threat at the current cap | Protection Paladin | Consecration and Holy-damage threat make messy pulls easier to stabilize quickly. |
Level 30 Tanking Is Not the Final Level-60 Meta
The current ranking is useful because all three tank trees now expose enough of their intended identity to compare them meaningfully. It still stops well before complete endgame builds, final raid encounters, full profession scaling, complete gear sets, and finished tuning.
That matters for all three tanks. Protection Paladin’s current Level-30 lead may narrow once Warrior and Druid unlock deeper tools. Warrior gains more of its endgame tank package later, while Feral still has missing Bear interactions and future Swipe scaling to consider. A current S or A tier is therefore a description of the beta bracket, not a permanent raid roster rule.
Use this page to choose the tank that fits the current game. Move to the class hub if you are still deciding whether the class itself fits your main-character goals, then into the linked tank guide once the role is chosen. Exact talent ranks and preset verification remain calculator-owned rather than being duplicated on this ranking page.
Turn Your Tank Pick Into PvE Progression
Once you know which tanking style fits you, choose the group content you want to prepare for next. The current ranking is most useful for Level-30 dungeon play, while raids remain a later progression goal rather than a finished Level-60 tank meta.
